EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-14-14  pinoymaster77: Good am,

Thanks for the text messages from spawn2, gmlet and Iggy. On pins and needles din ako nung balita na tagilid both teams.

Pero meron tayong Alamat eh, and great save by JP in fighting for the draw, to clinch the hard earned match draw for the team! Ayos na nga yung pasok sa TOP 50, higher than their seeding sa telenovela na inabot ng team na eto.

Great fighting spirit guys, lahing Lapu-lapu nga!

To God be the glory!

Will lookout kung kelan planned simple event for AFGM and Pau. And malapit din kila wordfun si GM Panjol, taga Binan.

Aug-14-14  pinoymaster77: Mabigat kinamada ng Olympiad champ China. aba si top board GM Wang Yue lang may talo sa rd2 vs GM Peter Leko.

This time around ang top hitman nila si GM Yu Yangyi with an eyepopping 9.5/11 performance! Di lumayo top scorer nila na si GM Ding Liren sa 2012 Istanbul Olympiad, this time eh 7.5/10 for a still very high 75% performance!

Pinahinga pa nila GMs Wang Hao, Li Chao, Bu sa lagay na yun, mabigat ang TOP 8 nila, puedeng 2 Olympiad teams na contender!

Aug-14-14  spawn2: Good morning,

It was good to see that our final placing was better than our seeding. It was a nice save for Team Pinas in the last round led by the Living Legend of Philippine chess.

Aug-14-14  jaimenarin: Congratulations team Pinas!! Both men/women wood pushers! With special mention to AFGM!!
Aug-14-14  dunkenchess: Our big congratulations to the Philippines Mens Team in the just concluded World Chess Olympics at Tromso, Norway for their outstanding performance inspite the team being called a ragtag team having no team training at Baguio and hastily assembled. To GM E. Torre for his inspirations and still has the sting unmatched in the Olympics, can still go on. Against Canada that has a higher team and individual rating the Phil Men really played to the draw. Keep up the good work.
Aug-15-14  spawn2: Some are saying that our performance in the recently concluded Olympiad was one of our worse. That prompted me to investigate whether that statement is true. I checked Olimpbase for the country's worse performances (final placing is 40th and above) and this is what I found.

In the last 8 years, the country has registered four (4) 40th and above final placing:

2006 - 44th
2008 - 46th
2010 - 50th
2014 - 46th

But, if you will compare the abovementioned results to the country's initial seeding, everything will become clearer:

2006 - 44th (Initial Seeding 35th)
2008 - 46th (Initial Seeding 38th)
2010 - 50th (Initial Seeding 37th)

<2014 - 46th Initial Seeding 52nd>

It is very evident that the country performed above expectation in the last Olympiad. Could they have performed better with the right training schedule? Yes, I believe so. But saying that the campaign was a bust is not accurate.

Aug-15-14  art00: <spawn2> I agree with you completely. But, I must be honest that I was concerned when noticed, in the last few rounds, that we were behind Malaysia and Singapore in the rankings (Open).

We did finish behind Vietnam and Indonesia which puts us 3rd in southeast Asia (unless I missed something).

***

Aug-15-14  spawn2: hi <art00>,

I have not check the strength of opposition of both Malaysia and Singapore in the early and middle rounds. Will take a look and compare it to Team Pinas.

Vietnam was 7th last in the 2012 Olympiad and had their one two punch onboard while Indonesia, based from the posts I read really prepared by sending their Team to Russia to train.

Aug-15-14  scout118: spawn2: <Some are saying that our performance in the recently concluded Olympiad was one of our worse.>

You don't have to try so hard. Everyone agrees with a sigh of relief that seeded 52nd and finishing 46th may be rationalized as not being a complete bust.

I thought that if not for the lucky last minute draw by JP Gomez in a lost position vs that 2593 Canadian GM, things would have been much worse, probably more indicative of the actual confused situation.

True, no one can dispute the guts and raw talent of each of the individual players, in particular AFGM, and the coach /official /alternate who wasn't qualified via ELO or through the qualifying event, but played board 5 like a lucky pair of spare socks, thank God.

But that was not a "Team" in the real sense of the word.

Perhaps lessons can be learned from the gold medalists.

"At the press conference after the match, the players emphasized the good team spirit. Ni Hua said something interesting about their playing styles: “In the past. we played very sharp openings, but we realized that they might not be so suitable to our style. We made changes. Nowadays we've found more solutions; we combine different styles and we can also adopt styles of American and European styles and play solid openings.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHu...

Instructional for any team.

But I guess, much of this has to come from the top. And we all know the whos, the whys and the wherefores.

Aug-15-14  scout118: BTW, Pichay's entourage included at least 2 officials who reportedly participated in the interview with Wesley So.

I wonder how many more "officials" were included in the all-expense-paid NCFP junket and if funding all came out of Filipino tax pesos, money which could have been used for training and forming a real team on a timely basis.

Aug-15-14  spawn2: <scout118>

Did not break a sweat:)I assure you not everyone shares our positive disposition regarding the final placing of Team Pinas.

I will not call it luck (GM JP's draw). It was for the 2593 GM to win it but he could not. Time pressure and nerves could have played tricks on GM Hansen. Also, GM Gomez has to find the right moves to capitalize on the Canadian's mistakes. If GM JP was asked to roll a dice to try and draw the game, then luck would have played a role big time.

It was a ragtag team, but still a team for me.

No disputing that NCFP will have to really change its ways for the sake of Philippine Chess.

Aug-15-14  scout118: <spawn2>

If the difference between 46th or 76th place depended entirely on a blunder on the 82nd and last move of an opponent who was not familiar with or forgot about the "Troitzky Line", then I think you can consider that an element of luck was somehow involved along with credit for GM JP's tenacity.

For reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_kn...

Aug-15-14  scout118: spwan2: <No disputing that NCFP will have to really change its ways for the sake of Philippine Chess.>

That's a pretty diplomatic understatement.

Aug-15-14  spawn2: <scout118>

Why dwell on the 82nd? GM Hansen could have avoided going into the complicated Two Knights vs Rook if he made the right move on the 30th or the 46th etc? I know what you will say..GM JP was lucky that GM Hansen made those inferior moves:)

Aug-15-14  spawn2: <No disputing that NCFP will have to really change its ways for the sake of Philipine Chess>

<That's a pretty diplomatic understatement>

We try to maintain the General Patronage rating of the Torre page;)

Aug-15-14  spawn2: <scout118>

If you read the article you posted, its written that with "optimal play", King and 2 Knights can mate King and pawn in 115 moves. Unfortunately, there is also the 50 moves w/o draw rule which I believe has been upgraded to the 70 moves without capture draw.

My guess is that contrary to your statement that he may have forgotten the rule, he remembered it clearly and knew that he cannot force mate based on the conditions on the board that is why he took the pawn:)

Aug-15-14  spawn2: The only way GM Hansen can deliver a force mate before the 70 move draw rule is if he has access to the 5 man Nalimov table bases. He was already painting the town "red" which showed that he was tired already. Bashing 30, 40 optimal moves were no longer possible at that time.
Aug-15-14  spawn2: Chess In School Program

Am happy to announce that tomorrow August 16, the elementary and high school student of the different schools being supported by the Chinese Filipino Business Club Inc. will complete the 4 Saturday Chess Clinic program of the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation.

Under 12 champion Stephen Pangilinan and under 8 champion Bacojo will conduct simul exhibition. 120 students are expected to attend.

NM Carag and FI Bersamina will conduct the chess clinic and help in the simul.

Aug-15-14  pinoymaster77: bubuli / Iskuba,

May recent mention on the grassroots program, ang pinakamalapit na over the years eh yung multi-level meets to eventually advance to Palarong Pambansa, mag-umpisa yan sa districts ng kada bayan o city eh, specially sa public schools eh determinado ibang teachers dyan na may ma-develop silang player na mag advance, due to the so many incentives / benefits imbedded in the DepEd. Kung gusto pang mas suyod na programa eh yung funding for the 'chess in curriculum', baka same path ng 'K to 12' yan na took many years to firm up.

In the meantime eh private organizations, gaya ng mga programa ng ETCF, eh reaching some of these sectors. in partnership with private sponsors.
