EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-15-14  pinoymaster77: I hope Iggy doesn't mind my sharing here of his FB post. ALL 5 Mens players did score > 50% !

Ignacio Dee
Post-mortem
Men's team:
Our team did well, considering what they have been through. They faced teams which we don't normally battle in Olympiads. They overcame lots of moments so anxious that people in this site get caught up in their struggle.

We could have had a better team but you must make the most of what you have. Ino Sadorra and John Paul Gomez played all 11 rounds and scored 6.5 and 5.5, respectively. That is a good showing.

People who expected Sadorra to flounder in his first Board One assignment saw him coming to grips with the responsibility he has after the first rest day. A grandmaster who can uncork a positional sacrifice like Nxf2 to force an ending where Ivanchuk was two pawns up in a locked position shows how far he can go.

Gomez did all right at Board Two. Despite scoring less than 50 percent, he fought in every game especially after the first rest day. He is courageous, but needs a deeper arsenal which only study can give. His big save in the last round will be long remembered.

The team could not have done well without Torre's never-say-die attitude. Torre ( 5.5/9) may have lost his sharpness in the opening but look at how he used every means to win. There are lapses but he fought hard. A three-day pause energized him for the last round which every chess player, young and old, should study. It belongs to our chess lore. Bersamina (5/9) grew up as a player in the Olympiad. It's no longer, as we pundits say, "pa uslog-uslog ang tira." He is a positional player who is learning how to blend tactics in his game. The endgame is his strength. He finds resources. Further study and playing stronger opponents will make him a formidable in the future.

Gonzales, the captain, was pressed into service and did Ok. 2.5/4 is a good score despite rust. But the Gonzales chess players know is not the same one who is content to wait, dig in and hope his opponent over-reaches. That can only explain why he did not play actively vs Murshed and why his play became loose against Sambuev in the last round.

In 2012, as WNM Susan Itaas correctly points out, we played superbly. We were on Table 2 with three rounds to go but fell from that perch. Three players from that team are not around but in the 2014 Olympiad we were rewarded with a glimpse of the future from Sadorra, Bersamina and Gomez.

Aug-15-14  pinoymaster77: Just to summarize the MEASUREABLES :

NAME RATING SCORES TPR ELO
GM Ino 2590 6.5/11 2593 + 2.3

GM JP 2526 5.5/11 2466 - 7.4

GM Euge 2438 5.5/9 2527 + 9.9

IM Pau 2363 5/9 2389 +16.6

GM Jay 2405 2.5/4 2379 - 0.7

So there, ALL 5 FIGHTING MEN / loyal soldiers with degree of Lapu-lapu eh scored > 50% AGAINST ALL ODDs per term nga ni Dennis Principe of DZSR/PTV4 Sports / Aksyon Sports.

Sounds about right, when the RP/TPR exceeds a player's rating, usually may ELO gain.

Aug-15-14  dunkenchess: It is my privilege to say GM Eugene O. Torre for President of NCFP. Vote for him.

When's the election?

Aug-15-14  pinoymaster77: Bobby Ang's Chesspiece as of after round 10, he was keen on the Middle Kingdom China finally annexing the Olympiad gold ! Eto naman commentary nya on TEAM PHI :

"The Philippine team recovered with big wins in round 9 (3-1 vs Pakistan) and 10 (4-0 against Bolivia) and are now in 49th place. It is noteworthy that GM Jayson Gonzales, the supposedly non-playing team captain who was forced to suit up due to the non-appearance of Barcenilla, stepped in to relieve the fatigued Torre and Bersamina in the last 3 rounds and scored 2 wins + 1 draw. A super-sub!"

Aug-16-14  kardopov: Gutsy performance by the Philippine team. The members should be commended and remunerated. However, their achievement will not hide the sorry state the Philippine chess is experiencing. One miserable example was the absence of proper training the team should have before they were thrown to the battleground. I just don't know how the NCFP will explain this thing. Gladly, the team performed above expectation, lest I will recommend some heads to be chopped down rolling. Hehehe... joke lang po.
Aug-16-14  dunkenchess: Number 46 na nga tayo doon pa magkalat of all na lugar sa chess Olympiad pa. Ay sus ginoo makauulaw kaayo uy. Asa na man ang giingon nga decency and gentleman. Sige pichay ty na lang.
Aug-16-14  joeyj: yong favs writer ni <dunken> nag resurrect !!!

Aug-16-14  dunkenchess: Yessss!!! My opponent in many games Atty NM Samuel Estimo. Nabuhay dugo ko dahil lugi ako noong araw. Dalawang beses lang ako makatabla da rest talo. He he he...
Aug-16-14  bubuli55: Tumira si Sammy! Ubosh ..... :)
Aug-16-14  Iskubadayb: Bradidik natin yang si Sammy. Teammate ko yan noon. He cares about the game. I like his article. Maybe we'll have a coffee with Euge... someday... just maybe. :)
Aug-17-14  pinoymaster77: Under whose term (PCF o NCFP na ba) nung 2004 SEAG ba yun na Phils hosted sa Tagaytay and got ZERO GOLD, dun unveiled ng Vietnam ang then secret weapons nila na teeners Le and Nguyen Ngoc. Dun yata nayanig ang PHIL chess.

And am not sure if that was 1 of main factors for leadership change, did Pichay come in around 2005? And under what circumstances, was he elected? Or was appointed / endorsed by then FG Arroyo?

I was out of the chess scene/circles then, just re-acquainted around 2009/10.

Aug-17-14  spawn2: I will post later why I cant agree with Mr. Estimo's view that "Phil Team hits rock bottom in Olympiad". If he was only referring to our Women's team, then his view maybe accurate.
Aug-17-14  SugarDom: Bakit nang siya ba president ng PCF maganda yung Philipine chess?
Aug-17-14  Iskubadayb: I think Sammy was talking about the overall pic. How they seeded someone that can't make it. There's no training camp. Leaders are more interested in the election. Wesley's absence, of course. Plus the final ranking.

I think he's showing how this office makes all the bad moves.

Ahgehe
Aug-17-14  spawn2: The reason I don't agree with the article written by Mr. Estimo is because he's trying to make it appear that through the inept handling of NCFP, the performance of the Men's team was one of its worse not declaring that based on initial seeding, we were expected to perform lower than our actual performance. He is misleading the general public by not disclosing everything (that our Team was seeded 52nd).

Kawawa naman yung mga players natin na naghirap. GM Ino Sadorra earned 3 elo points manning board 1, si AFGM halos plus 10 and IM Bersamina in his first Olympiad increased his by almost 17. Only GM Gomez whose game did not click in Tromso shed some elo (8) while GM Jayson halos walang lagas. Dapat pala di na pinanalo ni Genius or pinilit i-draw ni GM Gomez tutal naman eh ang difference naman paglabas sa dyaryo kung natalo eh worst performance vs ngayon eh one of its worse.

Kung sinabi sa article eh 'not one of their best performances' eh baka matanggap ko pa yun.

Yung me mga galit sa NCFP should not make a point at the expense of the Men's Team. Pwede nila gamitin yung paglipat ni Wes ng Federation or di pag-join ni GM Oli or yung result ng Women's.

Aug-17-14  pinoymaster77: Sa NCFP yata humawak si Mr. Sammy amd reportedly for awhile si Mr. Go Teng Kok.

Reportedly GTK found chess 'even more compicated' than say athletics which later thrived under his leadership, until he got sick and turned over recently the PATAFA leadership to Mr. Juico.

Maybe the wannabes are smelling blood, but the thing is does anybody have the power and influence to call for earlier polls. If not, then get ready for 2016.

Aug-17-14  spawn2: I hate it when people use other people to promote their own agenda.

With regard to NCFP leadership undergoing total overhaul, I only pray that the people who will take over the reigns will do a better job if they are successful in defeating the incumbent in the election.

Ayaw ko sumali dyan sa mga politics politics na yan. Magulo ang diskusyunan dyan! Damn if you do and damn if you don't ang kalakaran sa politika.

Aug-17-14  Pulo y Gata: Unfortunately, NM Estimo can hardly be considered an impartial and balanced observer in this issue. His history of involvement in the national chess body and his protracted personal political finger wrestling with people behind the current NCFP must be taken into account in weighing his views.

Philippine chess has many problems, past or present. Personally, I don't believe that the same players or stakeholders hold the solution that will truly benefit the majority of chess players, fans, and supporters.

Aug-17-14  bubuli55: Majirap talaga ayusin yan. Sabi nga to right the ship. It needs a kapitan :)

Somebody who is very good in organization, Kap :)

Aug-17-14  SugarDom: bubz, kelan ka balik Pilipins?, sana andito ako.
Aug-17-14  bubuli55: Sugz. Wala pang katiyakan. Abisuhan kita :)
Aug-18-14  Birthday Boy: Nice to see him featured in Chessbase article
