EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-18-14  pinoymaster77: Ano sainyo ang memorable games sa Tromso Olympiad ?

Ang sakin, in order eh (though di ko pa fully na replay these games, but based on posts/sharings/analyses :

1. GM JPs last round draw vs GM Hansen to CLINCH the match draw for TEAM PHI and have a more decent finish at 46th, above the ranking of 52nd ba yun.

2. GM Torre's 'escape draw' being quality down and opponent had queening pawn. I think nakakita ng perpetual line.

3. IM Paulo's 'escape draw' vs Salinas Herrera at 1 point nga daw per sharing ni Lilet eh +12 na kalaban.

4. GM Ino's fighting draw vs GM Chucky

Aug-18-14  Iskubadayb: The first game that comes to mind ay yung namiss ni bradidik ang simple combo win. The game was a tight struggle... dikdikan sa pwesto. I remember looking at other games, and when I came back to his game, his bishop finally made it to f3. It was obvious he was planning to check with Bd5, or so I thought. I think it ended in a draw.

Ang isa pang laro na memorable sa akin ay ang panalo ni Master Berphy in a minor piece ending... bishop pair siya laban sa bish and yokabz. Black pieces siya. It was a difficult endgame. Bilib ako sa pagdala ni Paul dun. I wanted him to get a rest after that but he wasn't so lucky to get one.

Aug-18-14  Pulo y Gata: I liked Sadorra's game against Ivanchuk. He put up a good fight.
Aug-18-14  bubuli55: Ivanchuk - Sadorra was very memorable to me. I thought Julio was losing each time Chucky was taking his pawns. And then Bang! 14...Nf2! Uh oh. That's when I started praying. Ahehe. Sana maitabla ni Julio. :)

Another is AFGM's last game. The team had to win vs canada for good placing and AFGM delivered. 34.Nf1! Brought the house down for me.

Another is Paulo's save from certain defeat. I remember saying - Maganda ang kinabukasan ni Paulo. GM sigurado ito.

Last one siempre yung tabla ni JP sa last match.

teka muna. Log in si Julio ngayon gabi. :)

Aug-18-14  Olavi: <"The first Asian grandmaster Eugene Torre, 62, broke the all-time record: he participated in 21 Chess Olympiads."> Unsurprisingly, Kavalek got it wrong. This was Torre's 22nd Olympiad.
Aug-18-14  Pulo y Gata: Surprisingly, even local scribes in philippines get the number wrong.
Aug-18-14  Olavi: At least the wikipedia entry is correct.
Aug-18-14  Olavi: Not that this page is perfect either. Torre qualified from the 1982 Toluca Interzonal and lost the quarterfinal match against Ribli in 1983 - see bio above.
Aug-18-14  Iskubadayb: This page is PERFECT! :)
Aug-18-14  Iskubadayb: If you want to tall about Toluca and the match against Ribli in Alicante, you came to the right place. :)
Aug-19-14  spawn2: My 2014 Olympiad faves:

GM Torre's last game (London System)
GM Torre's Nimzo Larsen
IM Bersamina's Sicilian game
(was it mate on f2)
GM Ino's game with GM Chucky
GM JP's rook vs 2 knights game

Aug-19-14  dunkenchess: Sa aking nakita nobody in Manila has the guts para paalisin si pichay at nobody has the guts para ayusin ang NCFP. Haaayyyyy...
Aug-19-14  spawn2: Hopefully, before the year ends, we will have the chance to see our idols play again. If my memory serves me right, there is the Indon Open in October.
Aug-19-14  joeyj: AFGM Eugene Torre will be in-charge of "chess in schools" program with the DepEd ... says Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino - FIDE general secretary

http://www.journal.com.ph/sports/ot...

Aug-20-14  dunkenchess: In our experience good chess players cannot be made as instructors for chess in schools either private or public, thus they can not earn. I had talk to my nephew who is a school supervisor and he told me that one must be a teacher board passer then he can be employed as such to teach chess in any school. Whew I had to finish first BSEED then pass the board. He he he...
Aug-20-14  geniokov: Good Morning! It´s about time for AFGM to have a position or a responsibility as Mr Abraham Tolentino mentioned.Congratulations to GM Torre for his excellent performance in recent Olympiad.
Aug-20-14  pinoymaster77: There's 1 good thing in that Journal article quoting Sec Gen of both NCFP and FIDE na si Cong. Bambol, na train the youth.

Pero na MISS na sabihin sa kanya na bitin-bitin ang PSC budget for the youth, so far ang mga hindi NATULOY :

1. Dun sa Asian Youth qualifiers, for the U12 and below, di napadala sa Uzbekistan.

2. The Natl Jr champs Nazario and San Diego were not sent to the Asian Youth in Yemen, it remains to be seen if they can make it to the World Juniors in Mumbai.

NOTE, national Juniors champs na natin eto.

3. Dun sa National Youth Finals set to start on Friday, its not clear to which intl event mag-qualify, kung meron man. At kung may PSC budget.

I wonder if FIDE could help out with funding some of the youth projects?

Saka sana ma clearout in transparency whats the hitch on PSC budgetting - is it due to stricter COA? Na-submit naman sa start of the year yung NCFP calendar with the activities, but am really not privy on how is the mechanics for releasing funds for each NCFP event?

Aug-22-14  pinoymaster77: Paano nga kaya ginawang training and preparation ng Indian team?

Meron din silang Senior Trainers na nakatutok sa World Champ material nila, but I wonder if they tapped a foreign coach?

Sa Pinas, there are modest action plans moving forward.

Aug-22-14  dunkenchess: Me budget pero hindi natuloy? Simple lang hindi na clear yung dati. Patong patong na papeles at vouchers to be cleared pa. For the present contingent hindi rin natuloy dhl pumipili ng chaperon sa mga bata na mula sa kanilang opisina for jungket. Ganyan ang sestima. Pruweba ang natapos na olimpiada. Lol.
Aug-22-14  dunkenchess: The children can now see what the elders are doing. Bad and bad example for them to follow in the future.
Aug-22-14  geniokov: < Paano nga kaya ginawang training and preparation ng Indian team? Meron din silang Senior Trainers na nakatutok sa World Champ material nila, but I wonder if they tapped a foreign coach?> Kaya naman ng Pinoy ang naabot ng China at India sa chess! I believed in our talented players! The problem is money! Some think business first as top priority instead of improving our younger generations. They think that since Chess is not famous in our country, they put a little budget in Chess compare to other sports. They are widening the gap for us to cope on the improvement in chess."One step behind" na nga tayo eh hindi pa mabigyan ng break.
If a TEAM won in World Basketball then it will only remember the Country but not all the players who work on it! But in Chess,You will be imagine as a KING SITTING IN A THROWN carrying a country name and counting number of years! Yung value noon!
Aug-22-14  dunkenchess: Korek ka dyan! Value plus honor are the important things.
Aug-22-14  epistle: Ok. Let's just see if Wesley will be able to dethrown Carlsen.
