EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-22-14  spawn2: Let's give NCFP the chance to correct their mistakes (at least until end of the year). If after the problems they encountered, they still refuse to institute the necessary changes then, they deserved to be ousted in 2016.
Aug-22-14  geniokov: <spawn2> That is the best approach and understanding we all needed! I agree to that! There is an old saying,"Everything in this World will vanish except changes!"
Aug-22-14  geniokov: < epistle: Ok. Let's just see if Wesley will be able to dethrown Carlsen.> Of course he can!...But for the meantime, the story might go like this,"Magnus,Pwede bang tumayo ka sa upuan mo at umalis dahil wawalisin ko muna ang ilalim ng silya(sahig) medyo magabok na!" LOL!
Aug-22-14  dunkenchess: Lol. OK yan. Parang TN. First kong nabasa ito. Medyo englisan para maanderstan ng mga alien. Lol.
Aug-22-14  SugarDom: Pera is not the problem. Management is the problem.

For NCFP side, kahit papano may action plan for the elite players, it will be known at the proper time.

Aug-22-14  geniokov: Well, about India,i personally don´t know kung ano ang preparation nila.Let us admit na magaling din naman ang mga players nila that´s why they got 3rd place.Yung sa atin,as i said, kaya ng Pinoy but talagang medyo kailangan ng financial stewardship and time syempre. Mahirap sa isang Team ang may dala-dalang worries at pressure like that.
Aug-22-14  pinoymaster77: Nabanggit yung Management, ang tumbok nun sa TD / COO position.

Assuming lang may talent search now, sino ba candidate / nominee nyo who can do a BETTER JOB ?

Someone who is experienced in chess administration and knows the Philippine chess community like the back of his hand?

But i reserve his name as next to President Pichay. My 2nd option is Bong Villamayor!
Aug-22-14  pinoymaster77: Genio,

For Technical Director na effectively the 'Chief Operating Officer' (COO) ang tinatanong ko, since this person runs the day-to-day operations of the NCFP.

Sa 2016 pa elections, dun pa botohan for the NCFP President, and I think pati Board of Directors (BOD) yata binoboto din.

Should this person necessary to have a "know-how" in chess? About BOD,siguro pwedeng i-consider dito si Castro Abundo. How about asking our own Master Isku? Kahit ideas man lang.
Aug-22-14  wordfunph: brethren genio,

still bitter? call Pichay now...and try to move on.

Aug-22-14  pinoymaster77: Correct me if Im wrong, pero sa mga kuwento ng mga chess veterans, due to the heated mano-mano ng late Art Borjal / PCF Pres and Mr. Campomanes / FIDE eh saka nagka brainchild na maset-up yung NCFP with Campo's imprimatur.

The first set of NCFP officers were mainly players, and nag serve na nuon si GM Bong.

I heard from the stories told na later on, the player-officials na din later nagbangayan due to the spoils. Mas lalo pa yatang lesser tournaments nuon.

Nung time naman Pichay, he was ushered in during GMA time, he didn't have problems with funds as he's networked with govt agencies, di nga daw kumukuha pa ang NCFP sa PSC ng budget. Kaya under PNoy, with no govt links and many cases filed against him, Pichay had to swallow his pride and start to work with the PSC. During this difficult period, ayon sa mga kuwento Sen. Koko was 'approached' to possibly take over, but he couldn't commit.

Aug-22-14  geniokov: <word> Forget it bro.i´m not bitter and para sa akin eh calling Pichay will not make me to move on.Kalimutan na lang at magsimula ng maayos bro.

- Sitting Congressman (dati Tagaytay Mayor but now a relative sits as Mayor)

- Philcycling President - sa media interview eh boldly pronounced he expects a gold medal from his wards in the forthcoming Asian Games, lets watch.

- NCFP Secretary General - many years na

- Now FIDE Secretary General (before this, he was 3.3 Zone President which he had to relinquish to Vietnam after winning with Kirsan)

Note Bambol has been long standing NCFP official as well, what were his accomplishments in the past years?

Yes, politico din. In case he will run for NCFP President, can he chip in or get sponsors to at least match the 15M PSC budget? At 30M (PSC + Private) per year, and minimal wastages eh madami na sigurong magagawa.

Aug-22-14  geniokov: <pm77> i don´t have any idea anymore kung sino pa ang pu-puwede?

Again, pag umatake sumpong mo eh i have his number. Call him para ma-relieve ka sa mga hinaing mo kay Pich and to NCFP, at para matuldukan na yang galaiti mo kay Pich. Very unfair to crucify him, this is not the right forum. Respeto na lang sa pahina ni AFGM. We can discuss the issue sa forum ko.

move on pardz..

Aug-22-14  epistle: <geniokov: <pm77> i don´t have any idea anymore kung sino pa ang pu-puwede? Mine is only Koko and for <Sugar> is MVP.>

You cannot act like a god scanning the Philippine horizon and pick the person you like to become NCFP chief and use your magic to make it happen.

The number one qualification of a truly effective NCFP chief is the <desire> and the ability to head it and raise, beg, steal, borrow and spend <money> for Philippine chess. All these past years only Pichay had shown he has this desire.

Now before you mention another set of nominees to substitute him first find out if the person/s you have in mind has/have this <desire.>

Mine is just a suggestion? I´m not forcing anyone/anybody to resign? I am entitled to share my idea but it doesn´t mean that i am forcing someone to resign? <Now before you mention another set of nominees to substitute him first find out if the person/s you have in mind has/have this> I think you are hitting me below the belt? We all believe in God!Pasensya na talaga at matagal na akong wala sa Pinas.
Aug-22-14  Pulo y Gata: This is a lovely forum.
Aug-22-14  Lemon69: Mga kuya, tatay at lolo. Let's not be divided by this issue. Cool lang. If i may suggest, daanin nyo sa ibabaw ng board ang pagtatalo. Pro gulay vs. Anti-gulay. We're under one flag. :-D
Aug-22-14  pinoymaster77: Baka may lalabas din na valid candidate nyan by next year 2015, kung walang significant na 'do things differently' ang current NCFP leadership.
