EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Aug-23-14  Pulo y Gata: Hahaha!
Aug-23-14  mysql: Ok here's my question. Is there actually a "master plan" for Philippine chess? Because my impression right now is that the people who are running the NCFP are just "going through the motions". A tournament here, a tournament there without any focus on a goal. This was blatantly obvious with the very disorganized manner that they handled our campaign in the olympics.

That's why I would like So to stay with Polgar because she is giving him a clear direction on what to do. This is despite all of these controversies that are happening.

I think if they really want to improve NCFP, they should hire somebody who has experienced being a CEO/Chairmain of a large company. In this sense, I somewhat agree with Sugardom that Manny Pangilinan is a good option. The question is if he has the <desire> to do that.

Aug-23-14  geniokov: <spawn2: <torrefan> Naghahanap talaga ng pagtatalunan:)> Bro,baka mamaya eh si AFGM na nga yan eh ubosh tayo! LOL!
Aug-23-14  pinoymaster77: My recent posts were on NCFP since its the relevant topic and mentioned here and with the current state of Philippine chess, topped off with the unprecedented developments on our Olympiad team.

For current NCFP leadership, they're trying to do something more, within the limits of their resources.

For the 2016 elections kaya sinusuri din possible candidates eh 'will NCFP improve' or more of the same? What I don't agree on is the main consideration on change seems to be on the release of GM Wes or not. If a candidate runs for the prexy, it has to be for the benefit of the whole Philippine chess community.

Merong candidate na may 'desire' pero next year pa siguro full blast ang candidacy preparations.

Aug-23-14  mysql: Who is this candidate pinoymaster?
I think <sugardom> is a very good candidate, but he should start at the lower rung first as I don't think he will win if he runs for president immediately.
Aug-23-14  pinoymaster77: mysql,

Let's reserve it for 2015 when the timing is right.

Yun ang magiging scenario if their eyed patron / godfather doesn't commit.

Aug-23-14  pinoymaster77: Meantime for the OPEN tournaments, eh sharing the annual 'Mindanao Open' which is dubbed this year as the Cotabato Centennial Chess Championship, champion's purse is PhP 60K.

In round 5, FM N.Villanueva upset GM JP while NM Emperado (Campo Cup Challenger champ) eh on a roll with successive wins over GMs Laylo and Bitoon! Ilonggo Edsel Montoya naman stopped FM Villanueva to stay at 5/5 with NM Emperado. 3rd 5-pointer is NM(?) Salubre. Mas matinding bakbakan pa in the last 4 rounds :

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr143...

Aug-23-14  pinoymaster77: 1 other sector na madaming disgruntled and feeling left out eh hanay ng NMs, top Non-Masters, mga FMs and veteran IMs, for lack of opportunity to compete in such OPEN tournaments na may worthwhile na prize money.

GUTOM daw sila and they're kind of expecting GM Jayson as a former active player eh would understand their plight. The big ticket OPEN events are usually sponsored by LGUs, like usually there's the annual La Union Open, and Pangasinan Open atbp.

Aug-23-14  Pulo y Gata: Both Montoya and Salubre used to compete actively in Manila but decided to go back to the province. Both are strong, master-level players.

About open tournaments, I agree that the players could use more of them. At the same time, some things must be done to prevent collusion and game-fixing in these events. Seriously.

Aug-24-14  pinoymaster77: PYG,

Si NM Macacuna Macala ba si Allan Macala who used to play in Mmla events some years back? Napanood ko sa Pichay o GMA Cup eh super kunatsky, and opening with white eh d3 o e3, iba sa sya dun sa NM Makikano na Vismin player?

Yup, Edsel eh RTU graduate and since understated ang ELO nya, favorite sya as Board 3 o 4 player pag team event, pero FM/IM strength sya.

Speaking of team events eh there's revival of La Salle Dasma event on Oct 19th, 2050 ang average for the team.

Aug-24-14  Pulo y Gata: Makinano and Macala are rwo different players. I don't know that Macanuna guy. I know NM Allan Macala.
Aug-24-14  pinoymaster77: Kap Norlito has some innovative proposals / ideas, like the Gladiator match rules (which aims to encourage fighting games to the finish, no lame draws), oath to not cheat, and even lie detector tests.

But I have already pre-warned and sensed this is highly unpopular among the adult players, since mapapaso sila dito. At least, maganda na Kap experienced directly the moves and characters of these chess operators, at first he wouldn't believe there are syndicates.

Aug-24-14  pinoymaster77: I hope it won't be minded if I post it here, since its important to also REFORM the sport to move forward.

PYG, Kap thinks that just be reciting this oath, 70% of the players would comply due to fear of God, what do you think ?

ANTI GAME-FIXING MEASURES FOR COMMERCIAL CHESS LEAGUE

The CHESS PLAYER honor oath.
(To be recited at the commencement of the tournament day)

Raise your right hand.

I am a chess player.

I am an honorable person.

I will not lie, cheat or fix games nor tolerate any among us who does. I will not pre-arrange game results.
I promise to do my best in every game and to conduct myself most sincerely. I believe in God who sees and knows everything I do and even without God, I believe in Truth, Honesty and Fair Play.

This is my honor oath. May I suffer the consequences if I break my oath. May I receive punishment if I am untrue to myself.

So be it. Amen.

Aug-24-14  mysql: How come Gomez is rated only 2481?

<pinoymaster77: Meantime for the OPEN tournaments, eh sharing the annual 'Mindanao Open' which is dubbed this year as the Cotabato Centennial Chess Championship, champion's purse is PhP 60K. Aug-24-14  pinoymaster77: mysql,

Checked the NCFP site (ncf-phil.org), this 2481 is indeed indicated as GM JP's NCFP rating as of June 1, 2014.

But his FIDE ELO is indeed > 2500.

I don't know whats the difference or basis of computation of NCFP ratings.

Aug-24-14  SugarDom: <pinoymaster77> Chess Honor Oath. No comments sila. Confirmed na, unpopular. LOL.

But laws don't have to be popular, so we will just work to get this adopted by NCFP. Laws are meant to be obeyed not liked.

Aug-24-14  pinoymaster77: Sugar,

Malamang unpopular yan sa adult players and even Kiddies' parents, while sa chess fans eh skeptical, kagaya ko at first.

No harm done if organizers and NCFP would adopt such oath, plus other measures.

Nito lang sa BOGM diumano may OTB nego na dinig ng katabing board, while sa NATIONAL AGE GROUP eh there were 3 protests filed with 2 admissions, but I think NCFP treated with kid gloves, nakalaro pa din for Pinas yung isang player, while yung isa didn't qualify.

There seems to be an understood code of silence even sa Masters level, otherwise di ka brad pit.
