Aug-26-14 | | spawn2: After the chess season (BOGM and Olympiad) eh medyo pahinga muna. Hopefully magpick-up uli activity sa last quarter ng 2014. |
|
Aug-26-14 | | pinoymaster77: NCAA Chess Season 90 remaining 10 rounds na lang masundan. Tapos may FIBA World Cup, Asian Games sa Incheon, and Peace Cup. In between, sana maplantsa action plan ng NCFP for its elite athletes and youth. |
|
Aug-27-14 | | pinoymaster77: I hope its OK to post here, sports athletes are in same community and chess players also cross train sa basketball for fitness. As for me, during younger years, I would write down 'chess and basketball' as sports played. In a way, ang common eh Pinoys are UNDERDOGS pagdating sa world sports stage. Eto pampalakas ng loob. Matindi games skeds - vs Croatia, Greece, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Senegal in that order. 2 wins needed to advance to the quarterfinals : http://www.rappler.com/sports/by-sp... |

Aug-29-14 | | pinoymaster77: Nice! AFGM's win over GM Topalov then. |
|
Aug-30-14 | | spawn2: Feeling proud to see Gilas in FIBA after more than 25 years of waiting. |
|
Aug-30-14 | | pinoymaster77: BEFORE the game vs Croatia, eh sabi ko sa kids baka tambak ah kasi general idea ko sa kanila eh kaliga ng Slovenia and Serbia, yun nga nung pre-game eh dami palang NBA talent! But after jittery start (naninibago, ang tatangkad ng ka match-up!) eh naka adjust Coach Chot. Tuwang-tuwa mga Pinoys who bussed in from Madrid, sila nag animate sa venue and standing ovation ang Gilas! BTV analysts all praises for great basketball played by the Philippines, and how good a Coach si Chot Reyes in making the adjustments. Nakakapanghinayang, yes, yung game winner shot sana ni Jeff Chan sa regulation and dapat may foul nga kay Jason sa last shot sa overtime... Blatche still feeling his way around with Gilas, may crucial moments of the game na I wished na rim protector sya eh. Anyway, may trade-off talaga sa game nila ni Douthit (more sa insider si Marcus, mas may opensa si Dray). |
|
Aug-30-14 | | spawn2: Science project! I was at the edge of my sit. Galing ng Gilas. Pinakita nila na we belong and Filipinos can play basketball and play it well. Laban lang against Greece tomorrow and show the same intensity. Makakasungkit din tayo ng panalo sa FIBA World Cup. |
|
Aug-30-14 | | pinoymaster77: Per the FIBA site, top performers sila Blatche sa points (28) and rrebounds (12) and the smallest, oldest Gilas player Jimmy Alapag with 6 assists. BTV analysts were marvelling at Jimmy's physical condition being quick and fit for a 37-yr old. Medyo mababa pa nun ang shooting percentages ng Gilas sa 2pts and 3-pointers, pag tumaaas yan sa next games eh may paglalalagyan ang kalaban ! Tingin ko wins yan vs Puerto Rico and Senegal, then kung madale din Greece o Argentina eh celebration na yan for the Philippines ! http://www.fiba.com/basketballworld... |

Aug-31-14 | | torrefan: Greece is the next opponent?--
http://sports.inquirer.net/161628/t... <As Gilas Pilipinas carries on its journey to the Fiba World Cup, it will continue to deal with the reality of the height advantage of many, if not most, of its opponents.
There’s no question about the team’s determination, fighting heart and preparation.
Almost every Filipino coach that has handled a Philippine team that played on an international stage outside of the Southeast Asian Games has said that his team will make up for the lack of ceiling with tons of fighting spirit. Many have added that they will use speed—but that’s until the grim truth that you can’t use hustle and athleticism if you don’t have a ball to work with.> |

Aug-31-14 | | pinoymaster77: Iskuba,
Noted, lets see if WC Magnus eh makabawi man lang sa last round 6 kay Fabiano I think tom nite yun US time? Pero, pasintabi kay Vishy kung di sya makabawi sa match this yearend, it might be GM Caruana next, if he makes it through the Candidates gauntlet. |

Aug-31-14 | | spawn2: Just woke up in prep for the game at 2 am tomorrow morning. Need to watch the game against Greece. Go Gilas! |
|
Aug-31-14 | | pinoymaster77: The Hollywood tale of the 'Pinoy Sakuragi' Marc Pingris caught FIBA's attention and featured pa siya sa FIBA media channels. Yan ang 'rags to riches' thru basketball, bosing Vic is very proud of his manugang : http://www.fiba.com/basketballworld...- |

That elbow landing to Tenorio was Cheap.
That last 3 point shot was Cheap.
Bourousi shoving Alapag after the game was Cheap.
The fans booing Greece was (somehow) Cheap.
But the game? Priceless"

Sep-01-14 | | torrefan: The harsh reality of height--
<Gilas Pilipinas dropped its second straight game in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain as they lost to Greece, 82-70.The Filipinos hung tough throughout the game against a highly-ranked Greek team but they just could not put together one definitive run to storm back into the ball game. Georgios Printezis led Greece with 25 points and eight rebounds. Center Giannis Bourousis added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Greece is fifth in the FIBA rankings while the Philippines is at 34th. The Greeks towered over the Philippines with a five-inch height advantage. They used this to the hilt as they had four more rebounds and six more blocks against the Philippines. Gilas Pilipinas was again led by Andray Blatche who limped his way to 21 points and 14 rebounds. June Mar Fajardo was a revelation against Greece as he chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds in only 10 minutes on the floor. Like in their game against Croatia, Gilas started flat in the first quarter. Greece built an 11-point lead at 18-7 with a minute left in the opening period but Jayson Castro quickly brought it back down to eight as he nailed a looping triple with the Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo guarding him. Nikos Zisis scored his seventh and eighth points of the first to give Greece a 20-10 advantage after the first ten minutes. The Greeks tried to shake of the Filipinos early in the second quarter but Fajardo kept them close as he scored the first six points for Gilas. A tip-in from the PBA MVP cut the Greek lead down to nine at 25-16. The Greeks went into the half holding a 37-27 advantage. Blatche led Gilas with six points and eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Fajardo also scored six while Norwood added five. Castro and Pingris chipped in three each. The problem for Gilas in the first half was their outside shooting as they only made two triples out of 13 attempts with Jeff Chan going scoreless at halftime. The Greeks started the third quarter with a 5-0 blast to seize a 42-27 lead. Castro replied with two free throws but Greece got two straight baskets from Printezis to build a 17-point advantage, 46-29. Gilas settled down and got four straight free throws from Blatche, who was limping for most of the game with an injured knee. The naturalized Filipino then added a three-point play to bring the lead back down to 10 points at 46-36. The Greeks brought their lead back up to 16 but a triple from Jimmy Alapag and a jumper from Blatche brought it back down to 11, 54-43. Fajardo checked back into the game to give Blatche some rest and he immediately made an impact with two blocks and a layup to bring the Philippines closer at 58-45, heading into the final quarter. Baskets from Chan and Pingris kept Gilas in the game early in the fourth quarter as they were only down 60-50 with eight minutes still remaining in the game. The Greeks quickly put together five straight points to bring their lead up to 15. Blatche ended the run for a 65-52 tally for Greece with 6:23 left. Chan and Lee put up hurried triples that were both blocked by the Greeks and converted to fast break baskets as their lead ballooned back to 17 at 71-54. Gilas however had one last run in them as a triple by LA Tenorio and a tip-in by Japeth Aguilar cut the lead to 76-68 with 40 seconds left. But the Greeks held on to notch their second win in Group B following their 87-74 win over Senegal, tying Croatia for the group lead. The Croatians outlasted Argentina, 90-85. The Philippines fell to 0-2 in the company of Puerto Rico, which was stunned by Senegal earlier, 75-82.> Never tasted the lead? It seems it is against Puerto Rico, not Senegal, that Gilas can get lucky. |

From 2000 to 2002, Fischer lived in Baguio City in the Philippines, residing in the same compound as GM Eugenio Torre, his close friend who acted as his second during his 1992 match with Spassky. |
