EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Sep-02-14  pinoymaster77: SULIT pa din ang puyat kagabi, parang 4 quarters ng SHOOTOUT in OK corral eh!

Thats says it all the Argentine Coach na kasama din daw sa San Antonio staff eh admitted he couldn't figure out Gilas' game, and pati Argentinian players bumigay na kay Captain Jimmy 'Might Mite' Alapag!

Aba this time di na doughnut team natin, nandyan na Blatche, si 'd Krakken' Junemar, Pinoy Sakuragi and unique na si RDO.

Tapos aside from Kap Jimmy, eh how about those 2 THUNDEROUS dunks from top defender Gabe Norwood? Na-posterize pa si Scola ajeje...

PINOY na agad si Blatche! I still think pag retired na golden generation nila na kasama Nocioni Scola and Prigioni, kaya na ng Pilipinas...

https://ph.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/f...

Sep-02-14  pinoymaster77: Best performing Asian team ang PHI / Gilas dito, puro laban at dikit vs 'bsketball powers' #16 Croatia, #5 Greece and #3 Argentina!

Kabado na siguro sila for Asian Games, tingin ko kahit wala si Blatche eh mag contend ang Gilas !

https://ph.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/t...

Sep-02-14  pinoymaster77: Argentinian Coach Julio Llamas admitted it himself.

A tearjerker when I was reading Kap Jimmy's interview, he really epitomizes Gilas' puso !

Sep-02-14  Pulo y Gata: Effort should be appreciated but in the end it's the result that counts. In chess for example, "almost" does not count; flashy sacrifices are only justified if they obtain the desired results. Basketball is a zero-sum game-you win or lose. At least chess has a draw, which make it better, aside from the fact that the player is solely responsible for his play.

I also wish Gilas could win at this level-that would be a great thing to cheer for back here. However, they've got three losses already and it is very optimistic indeed to find small "wins" despite the actual loss.

Sep-02-14  torrefan: I must admit, however, that Gilas has potential. We should naturalize more big American players for the team and we are ready to conquer the world stage.
Sep-02-14  SugarDom: I'm still very proud of the Philippine team. Remember that was ARgentina former world champions and we almost won.

If MVP is at the helmp of PH olympiad team we can even win a medal. We will just pay 50k Euro for one Russian to play.

Sep-02-14  torrefan: Gilas could have won had it not castled long: O-O-O.
Sep-02-14  Pulo y Gata: I am watching the PHI-ARG replay now. Close, close, but no cigar.

Nice dunks by Gabe Norwood!

Sep-02-14  arkitekto: Playing for COUNTRY actually turned these underdogs into beast mode...because there is extra motivation than just personal glory. Thats Gilas. Same is true with sir Eugene last olympiad...i hope the rest of the athletes would realize that.
Sep-02-14  mysql: It's a learning experience. Maybe in the next generation the Philippines can even compete without any naturalized imports.
Sep-02-14  bubuli55: Sinquefield Cup has become a fabulous Fab Show instead of a tournament.
Sep-02-14  epistle: <arkitekto: Playing for COUNTRY actually turned these underdogs into beast mode.>

Still, they are just angry puppies compared to their big opponents.

<because there is extra motivation than just personal glory.>

yeah, money.

<mysql: It's a learning experience. Maybe in the next generation the Philippines can even compete without any naturalized imports.>

they can compete even now without those imports but the margins would be bigger: at least 20 points per game.

Sep-02-14  pinoymaster77: GM Fabiano SWEEPs the Sinquefield Cup with 6/6! And if my understanding is right on 2700chess.com, his live rating is 2861 and overtook WC Carlsen. How about a MATCH when Magnus regains some form, any private organizer out there ?
Sep-02-14  pinoymaster77: Mamaya 730pm game ng Gilas vs Puerto Rico, first time na primetime natapat, probably every Pinoy TV set will be tuned in to the game !?

Overlap pa sa Peace Cup ng Azkals, they battle Taiwan at 7pm, I think sa Rizal field.

Sep-02-14  Pulo y Gata: I hope they win against Puerto Rico. Blatche has a limp though; might affect his play. The close games agains Croatia and Argentina could have been won; history was waving its hands but the players were unable to rise to the occasion.
Sep-02-14  bubuli55: Puerto Rico maybe the team Gilas can beat. I don't think they can beat Senegal.

Does anybody know a link where I can check the stats on their previous games? Thx!

Sep-02-14  SugarDom: <pinoymaster77: GM Fabiano SWEEPs the Sinquefield Cup with 6/6! And if my understanding is right on 2700chess.com, his live rating is 2861 and overtook WC Carlsen.>

Sinquefield Cup is 10 rounds. And MC and FC liveratings are 2862 and 2830 respectively.

Sep-02-14  SugarDom: It will be easier to beat Senegal than Puerto Rico.
Sep-02-14  Pulo y Gata: Didn't Senegal beat Puerto Rico? It also beat Croatia ata.

PR offers Gilas a better chance to win.

Sep-02-14  Iskubadayb: Parang pison si Fabio. Pisat ang bawat madaanan. Apaw sa enerhiya ang bata. Parang si Bobby bago naging kampyon.
Sep-03-14  torrefan: Puerto Rico had lost two key players due to injuries. It is therefore possible for Gilas to achieve its best result: losing by just one point. Go Gilas!

In the meantime, the Champion in the Manila Fiba qualifier, Iran, is likewise a tailender at its group bracket. Which shows that the tournament held here, where millions were spent, and where Gilas placed second, was a tournament of basketball patzers.

Sep-03-14  spawn2: Another close loss for Team Gilas:( Was forced to dine in Shakey's Katipunan to be able to watch the game.

Noticed that we are missing a clutch shooter in the mold of James Yap who can take the shot during the dying seconds of the game.

We can get close but cant take the win in the endm

Gilas will have to fine-tune its line up in prep for the Asian Games and another shot at the FIBA Asian Championship on its next run.

Still proud of the Team. PUSO!

Sep-03-14  bubuli55: < spawn2 > thx for the update :)

I'm not able to watch the games from here but from the kibs I figure we are competitive because of our speed and puso to offset the height disadvantage. Except at the end. Maybe it becomes a half court game at the end. I mean usually with close games timeouts are called and defenses are set. And set plays must be fluidly executed.

Do Gilas have set plays where they really have an open look or they just flat out miss? Or are those shots contested?

Do they have pure shooters and slashers.

How are they on defense? Are the games high scoring games? Are their opponents scoring above 90's ?

Oh well. The team probably just needs more seasoning. :)

Sep-03-14  pinoymaster77: Sugar,

Oo nga ano, head spinning covering the sports and may bisita. 6 players nga pala and 1 round eh 5 games. May 4 rounds pa.

Round 10 pala ulit Carlsen vs Caruana

Sep-03-14  pinoymaster77: 1 game pa bukas vs Senegal. Hope may mag PEP talk sa kanila lalo na MVP, and they're not tired physically and psychologically.

Eto challenge / pampagana para talunin Senegalese...
