EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

According to our good Serbian friend Milos Djuric, the final rankings for the teams that were eliminated in the group stages will be based on the total point differences of every final score. Which means our 4 close losses and this win will land us from 17th-21st place. We'll still be the best performing Asian team in the World Cup.

Jimmy to Senegalese media: our country has a deep love and passion for the game. It's in our DNA
Sep-04-14  spawn2: Nakadale din! Puso!!
Sep-04-14  wordfunph: <PM77> thanks for providing the live elo update of Gilas. Nanalo din sa wakas, i intended not to watch the live game kasi nababadtrip lang ako.

next time di na ako manood para panalo Gilas.

congrats Gilas!

Sep-04-14  torrefan: Ako naman, next time, I won't wish for a victory anymore like what I did at the WS page last Aug.30--

<torrefan: <Gilas lost to Croatia but dominates social media.. > Basketball here is so bad, but well-loved, that when the National Team "almost won," they consider it a victory already. Just continue losing like this and when they come home they'll have a ticker-tape parade, a reception at Malacanang, and another P1M bonus each from MVP.

I just hope that for the sake of the money they spent for this team they could at least beat Senegal during their no-bearing game. There'll be dancing in the streets if this happens.>

Sep-04-14  SugarDom: When you love your country, you root for it whether chess, basketball or tetris.

This exemplary performance by our team in a sport where we have a physical disadvantage shows that Philippines has potential to develop world class talents in chess.

Sep-04-14  SugarDom: If the Philippine team had enough time to practice with Blatche, it could have been a different story.
Sep-04-14  lakers4sho: One or two botched plays down the stretch, we could've been looking at 4-1 instead of 1-4.
Sep-04-14  pinoymaster77: Yup, we have to consider :

- Gilas / SBP tried to lobby for more training time, but after many PBA Board meetings and adjusting the skeds for the last Conference to finish earlier, Gilas was left with around 2 months 'cramming time'.Players also had to rest their bodies / injuries specially yung mga umabot sa finals, SanMig had their grand slam so si Pingris yun.

- Blatche was able to hook up with Gilas in US (Miami training) na yata, barely a month and actually first international game pa lang nila together yung first game vs Croatia!

- May injuries din, like Jason Castro didn't join the tune-ups and naging doubtful sa World Cup, na-miss din nya last game vs Senegal due to banged up knee during Puerto Rico game. Injured din Pingris and Blatche, and possibly some others.

Hope they have enough time to HEAL for the Asian Games. Final fate ni Blatche for Asain Games to be firmed up in Sept 11 meeting in Korea.

Blessing for Blatche, na spot sya NBA Scouts and Miami Heat looking at him for backup center slot (but Mohammed and Okafor also being consaydered).

Sa Pinoys naman, Junemar and Jimmy got the spotlight. Kaya mamama ni Junemar yung NBA player na si Dieng. Maybe wishful thinking pa din na ma consider sa NBA, kasi kahit sila Haddadi and Nocioni are out of the NBA, mataas pa din ang bar.

Sep-04-14  pinoymaster77: Eto pampagana for World Cup 2019, 5 years from now... Meantime, for the Asiad, 1st game daw on Sept 23 1pm PHI time vs the topnotcher of Group B, then on Sept 25 1pm eh BIG game vs Iran! Pero preliminaries pa lang yun!

And if Im not mistaken eh may FIBA Asia qualifiers next year for the 2016 Olympics in Rio? Parang heard SBP/PHI will also bid for this, and mukhang gusto din ng FIBA since they enjoyed the first time.

Sep-05-14  torrefan: There should be an Olympics for sports excuses.
Sep-05-14  cro777: Wesley So, Liem Le and Ray Robson (from the SPICE chess team) will compete in the Millionaire Chess Open (Prize fund: $1,000,000) in Las Vegas next month.

The first seven rounds will be a qualifying round to determine who plays the finals on Millionaire Monday. The winner (champion) will receive $100,000.

Round 1 starts on Thursday, October 9th.

Sep-05-14  SugarDom: Wow. This is big money.
Sep-05-14  pinoymaster77: Ang parallels can be drawn between AFGM and Kap Jimmy is their discipline and lifestyle to keep in GOOD SHAPE. The BTV analysts were marvelling Jimmy couldn't be 36 or 37 years old the way he played.

Pag CALL of DUTY din, both are willing to serve. Jimmy would probably be called up for the Asian Games, lets lookout for the final line-up. Blatche is already out daw, and officials are appealing for replacement by Douthit.

Sep-06-14  spawn2: Yup pards, Kap Jimmy making the free throws to help clinch a win for Gilas while AFGM, winning his last game to give the country a respectable finish in the Olympiad based on their seeding:)

Borrow ko na battlecry ni TF..PUTAK!

Sep-06-14  torrefan: I am about to finish PACIFIC RIMS by Rafe Bartholomew. Philippine basketball in the eyes of an American. This jeepney-riding guy stayed here in the Philippines for three years, hobnobbing with all sorts of ballers from the far-flung barrios in the islands to PBA stars, to write this book. Quite an enjoyable read!
Sep-06-14  pinoymaster77: TF, akala ko yung movie about MEGA robots
and monsters eh book pala.

Meron nga yatang video yan to recap the experiences of the author.

Ika nga ni Kap Jimmy eh 'basketball is in our DNA'.

Sep-06-14  pinoymaster77: Hope the momentum from the YOG archery gold by Gab Moreno, the 5-gold medal harvest of dragonboat rowers and the recent Gilas showing in Spain eh maging inspirations. Pres. PNoy was a no show again. PSC had 33M budgetted daw per GAA and passed a supplemental budget of 50M, but expecting 30M will be left over which will do to their revolving fund (per DZSR updates) - this covers the airfares, allowances, uniforms, overseas training, equipment etc... Good to hear the 2.5M incentive for Gab Moreno already worked out by the PSC and given out in the send-off, that was quick !

Sep-06-14  Pulo y Gata: <pinoymaster77: Hope the momentum from the YOG archery gold by Gab Moreno, the 5-gold medal harvest of dragonboat rowers and the recent Gilas showing in Spain eh maging inspirations. >

I hope it becomes an eye-opener. Time to put the money where we could truly <excel>, not just compete. It's baffling that we insist on basketball when there are other sports we can focus our energies on. Let basketball continue but the funding should be commensurate to the achievement. Priorities.

Sep-06-14  SugarDom: <Good to hear the 2.5M incentive for Gab Moreno already worked out by the PSC and given out in the send-off, that was quick !>

If only WS had a good adviser and allowed him to participate in the SEAG, he could have avoided making enemies with government and could have gained some bonus from the Universiade win.

That what happens when you have a combative adviser whose instincts is to fight off authorities...

Sep-06-14  lakers4sho: <but the funding should be commensurate to the ROI.>

Fixed, at least to the eyes of whoever is funding these guys

Sep-06-14  wordfunph: tsongki Sugar, happy birthday!

go AFGM!

Sep-07-14  pinoymaster77: PYG,

For basketball I dont think theyre getting anything special from PSC in terms of bigger budget. Im not even sure kung priority sport ng PSC, since PSC defines the priority sport as having better chances at getting Olympic gold, like archery, golf, swimming, weightlifting, athletics etc.

Wala tayong magagawa if MVP Group pours in the money to basketball thru the SBP or MVP Foundation, as well as other sports that got attention, like boxing, football, badminton and some Olympic prospects.

Sep-07-14  Pulo y Gata: But we can do something as fans to pour our attention to other sports that deserve our cheer, not just basketball. Businesses put money on basketball because of the inordinate attention that its fans give it- no matter the result. The more fans, the more returns for the businesses in terms of advertisements, consumption- ROI, in short.

Look at the case of Wesley So, he competed in Chess WOrld Cups but the amount of mileage and monetary support was measly, even alm-like, despite the prestige of the event and Wesley's achievement. Gilas's achivement for example has been done many times chess-wise, in that many of our players had played in World Cups and got eliminated in the very first round. But we have some exceptional cases wherein our players advanced beyond the first eliminations, hence our chessers achieved more than our ballers.

As for government support, basketball can do without it precisely because the sport is so famous and the fans so fanatical that sponsors and players can generate money out of the game itself. So very unlike chess and many other sports, which only get noticed when they win intl acclaim, and afterwards forgotten again. Ideally, the government should identify these games where we have shown great potential and wins (intl medals) and put some money there. As 'mere' fans, what can we do? Maybe put more attention to these sports and perhaps, one fan at a time, the attention we put would be good enough for both government and private sector to notice and provide the needed support. Also maybe, for a start, we fans should view our so-called achievements in basketball to the harsh light of objectivity and react accordingly.

Sep-07-14  pinoymaster77: How can I say, I grew up since HS days pag sa forms eh kung sports, matik ang sagot ko 'chess and basketball' pero magkaiba talaga ang dating ng game sa fans. Iba talaga ang 'highs' and excitement pag b-ball eh, like last time nakanood ng Gilas game vs Qatar sa MOA Arena nung FIBA Asia eh iba ang atmosphere eh.

But since my younger kids also took up volleyball and football eh began to understand and appreciate those sports better.

The PANA /NSA for Archery is doing a GOOD JOB, 4 months palang pala new set of officers, they're having archery clinics sa Malls, working out inclusion in the UAAP and have a 6 year plan all the way to the 2020 Olympics. Dragonboat and similar affliates (canoe/kayak) are doing well under Ms. Jonee Go and related NSAs.

Pati PSC/POC top honchos also want to veer more away from basketball sana, pero ganun pa din eh yung basketball fan base. Saka MVP also is biggest private benefactor to POC/PSC.
