EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Sep-08-14  spawn2: They say the mid 70's to the early 80's can be considered as the golden age of Philippine Chess. Since I was too young to remember;), I would like to ask those who were already at the right age what was chess like during those times?
Sep-08-14  pinoymaster77: Kung may account si Iggy dito eh ang kanyang 'chess memory' would come in handy sana. Saka si Iskuba maybe can share.

Ako eh miron lang nuon at barangay player pero HS days ko yung 1972 ba yun na championship nila Fischer vs Spassky, na may adjournment pa.

1974 Nice Olympiad was also good for PHI chess, sino ba mga kasama ni GM Torre sa team.

Pero si Joey malamang sa 80s pa umusbong, kasi nung early working years ko eh hustler pa siya sa Non-Masters circuit, madalas magpa tournament nuon yung Checkmate ni Ms. Mila Emperado. Madalas magbakbakan for the champion's purse nuon sila Joey, Nelson Mariano III (yung naging GM), BongV, Allan Sasot, Enrique Paciencia, Jerry Nodado.

Not sure which years nag entry sila IM Rico ang Glenn B's swashbuckling variations.

Sep-08-14  pinoymaster77: Siguro magugustuhan basahin eto ni torrefan na avid book reader. Eh WHY NOT embark on working a book naman like 'Pacific boards' on the Philippine brand of CHESS? Aba,rich in chess culture din daw tayo o, mag immerse and research sa Luneta and other chess hotbeds all over the archipelago. Sino ba may PGNs ng immortal games ng likes nila IM Ruben Rodriguez and Andronico Yap?

"For me, a foreigner who lived in the Philippines, fell in love with its basketball culture, and came to see the country as a second home, watching Gilas play swelled me with the kind of fullhearted pride I’ve felt only a few times before. Gilas showed that Philippine basketball — this thing that I’d felt was special since I first landed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in 2005, that I’d dedicated much of my career to — was not just a quirky hoops human interest story but instead a brand of world-class basketball that charmed and impressed fans all over the globe. Basically, Gilas validated me. And I imagine that millions of Filipinos felt a similar fulfillment last week, only several times greater, because in my case Philippine basketball is an interest that I care deeply about, and for them, it’s in their bones."

Sep-10-14  pinoymaster77: Would like to commend ETCF / spawn2 for the successful program with the FilChi schools thru the CFBC, after the clinic, some of the schools have tapped the ETCF Trainors. Sana more schools also do that, and they can set-up their own school league, and the CFBC can sponsor tournaments.

Sana matuloy and mag proliferate pa yung ibang 'chess-in-schools' projects.

Sep-11-14  pinoymaster77: It looks like Marcus will get his shot at the Asiad! And team-up sila ni Junemar in trying to limit Haddadi. Sila Gabe and Dillinger bahala kay Bahrami and sila Jimmy/LA kay Kamrani !

Sep-11-14  pinoymaster77: This article makes it official from the Delegation line-up meeting today in Korea.

On the 2nd article, whats this, IN DEMAND na Gilas, pumipila na naturalized players! Pero, its up to Coach Chot, looks like he's gungho with Blatche's skills set, where he can 'confuse' the opposition !

Sep-13-14  spawn2: Happy with Douthit being given a contract extension. Am expecting him to play at a higher level in Asia because of two things:

1. He wants to prove himself
2. He was able to rest his weary body

Goodluck Marcus & Gilas!

Sep-13-14  pinoymaster77: Meanwhile while there's lull in international events after the Olympiad, AFGM supports chess thru the ETCF and appearances in local events.

Next maybe in Nov, reportedly matuloy yung 2 POC/PSC Intl events to be staged here, probably AFGM will see action in at least 1 event

FROM ORGANIZER:

"BUKAS NA PO ANG TOURNAMENT NA TO' GM EUGENE TORRE WILL GRACE THE AWARDING CEREMONY TO CONGRATULATE THE WINNERS AND ENCOURAGE THE PLAYERS. SEE YOU THERE!"

Sep-13-14  pinoymaster77: Touching on that 'chess-in-schools', if tama pagkaintindi na the previous DepEd Memo from then Sec Lapus is still valid, and its a matter of funding.

Then is it feasible na mag champ sa Senate si Sen Koko then sa Congress sila Cong. Bambol, Manny and Butch' brother, then propose a line item for DepEd in the ON-GOING hearings / meetings for the 2015 budget? Then sa DepEd ang point man eh USec Umali who sits in the NCFP Board.

It can be limited to the 'central' school in each city of the Philippines, that would greatly narrow it down, will probably be in the millions, not billions.

Sep-13-14  torrefan: In the school of one of my children they were taught chess. The instructor told them that the one who had captured more pieces wins the game.
Sep-17-14  pinoymaster77: Tagilid pa pala yung pag replace ni Douthit kay Blatche, kung 11 man line-up baka may ma displace (Gary o Dillinger?)

To be honest, i am against putting chess in the school curriculum because it is my belief that instructions should be simplified. It will also cost the government a lot of resources (human and financial).

But yes, chess-in-school as PE and sports.

Sep-18-14  gokusano: Gawa nalang ng barangay chess club. Dito pwede magturo mga master, hindi na kailangan ng prc license.
Sep-19-14  pinoymaster77: Wala naman dawna raise sa Team Managers' meeting kahapon so cleared Marcus and 12 man line-up.

Coach Rajko playing coy, of course kilala nya Gilas and in the FIBA Asia Cup pinahirapan nila Gilas. Iran pa din daw strongest sa tingin nya, same starting five pa din from 2007 nung handle nya :

Sep-19-14  pinoymaster77: Watchout for Junemar in the Asiad? Kelangan ma shutdown o ma limit nila ni Marcus si Haddadi, and sila Gabe/JD kay Bahrami. Tenorio/Jimmy/Paul vs Kamrani, 2nd game natin Iran I think on Sept 25 :

Sep-20-14  SugarDom: <pinoymaster77> we did the first ever chess honor oath-taking at WCC chess cafe today. Grabe reception, enthusiastic mag-recite mga players of about 50 people including non-players.

Nagpasakalye muna ako on why we need to stop game-fixing and cheating in chess.

Sep-20-14  torrefan: Congrats!

Can you post here the text of the oath?

Sep-20-14  SugarDom: The CHESS PLAYER honor oath.
(To be recited at the commencement of the tournament day) Raise your right hand.
I am a chess player.
I am an honorable person.
I will not lie, cheat or fix games nor tolerate any among us who does.

I will not pre-arrange game results.

I promise to do my best in every game and to conduct myself most sincerely.

I believe in God who sees and knows everything I do and even without God, I believe in Truth, Honesty and Fair Play.

This is my honor oath. May I suffer the consequences if I break my oath.

May I receive punishment if I am untrue to myself.

So be it. Amen.

Sep-20-14  torrefan: Nice oath. Usually oaths end with "So help me God." But that'll be disadvantageous to players who are atheists.
Sep-20-14  Pulo y Gata: But isn't Amen religious?
Sep-20-14  torrefan: No. It is the Tagalog expression of the desire to win and acquire points. Amen ang panalo! Amen ang puntos! Amen ang premyo!
Sep-20-14  SugarDom: Yeah. So we will put "Amen" in parenthesis, in order to make it optional.
Sep-20-14  pinoymaster77: Ok thats debut for the honor oath, may the players walk the talk !
Sep-20-14  pinoymaster77: Gilas Mgr Aboy Castro also has the same thinking on the Iran game, mark the date on Sept 25th Thurs. First game on Tues vs the Group B leader is Kazakhstan, also a tough, physical opponent
