EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Sep-27-14  SugarDom: Coach is not right.
Sep-27-14  bubuli55: IDK coach Chot. If he singles out a player in the media quite often, then that's not a good thing. But I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. One would think he knows his team best. It could be a calculated risk on his part. Maybe coach Chot had this talk with the player in private before and the coach is trying to squeeze the juices out from this player for the third time. IDK.

IDK Douthit. But the spotlight is now focused on him. What is he going to do? How will he react? That's the P3M question. Will he run away to the comfort of his family? Cry on his wife's shoulder? Tell his close friends how he was wronged by his coach in public? Fly to Boracay and grab an ice cold beer?

No. Just no. Every player wants to leave the game the way they want to. I'm pretty sure Douthit has some pride in him. He will come back strong and he will dunk that ball to the hole!

:)

Sep-27-14  pinoymaster77: 38yrs old na pala si Moon, so malamang last Asiad na nya. Naka 38pts pa, he's the same guy who tormented Gilas when handled pa ni Coach Rajko, hard to believe with the topnotch coaching support that Coach Chot has eh di nakuha sa scouting report and prepa. There was a time though in the 3rd qtr ba yun o 4th Gilas was still on top by 7 then Moon went on 8 point rampage, nakalabas si Norwood and si Ping bumabantay...

Oh well, may slight opening pa whem the Kazakhs took care of the Qataris, thats the way to beat them pala, outrebound and idiyeta top scorers.

Sep-27-14  Pulo y Gata: When the team can't control its fate and it relies on other teams' result, then it's clear indication that the team is weak. We don't even have to discuss the reliance on foreign hands.
Sep-28-14  bien pensant: Their motto, then, is just like that of some of my goats: "We don't believe in miracles: we RELY upon them."
Sep-28-14  pinoymaster77: United Philippine Basketball FB Groups :

Last na 'to ah.

BIG part of their recent revival/success if because of Gilas exploits which brought back the buzz to basketball.

In various fora, suggesting to adopt na the FIBA rules, kahit dun sa fouls/depensa, touching the ball while in the cylinder. PBA can keep the 12 minutes per quarter format.

http://www.spin.ph/basketball/news/...

Sep-28-14  pinoymaster77: May nabasa ako kahapan, may balls sila PATAFA Chief Juico and taekwondo Coach / SEAG legend Pitoy Cruz in declaring Maristella Torres is good for GOLD in the long jump while the taekwondo jins should get at least 1.

So far kasi 2 silvers and 2 bronzes pa lang, with 3 coming from wushu and 1 bronze from archery.

Sa boxing, yung highway robbery / hometown decision vs Bautista and some others raised alarm bells. Grabe pala 3M ang incentive for gold - not sure if ABAP adds 2M to the 1M mandated in RA 9064, o may bukod na 3M pa talaga from ABAP / MVP :

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Sep-28-14  Pulo y Gata: I am sorry, I agree that Gilas caused some buzz but I don't see how losing becomes an "exploit".

And you wonder how serious the PBA is in creating a true professional league with the inclusion of Pacquaio as a playing coach for Kia. They could have allowed Bobby in too and still no one would cry "It's a blow-blow!".

Basketball has become the opiate of the filipino masses.

Sep-28-14  pinoymaster77: PYG,

By Gilas 'exploits' eh if we reflect to the many 'lessons learned' of PBA selections under Coaches Uichico, Yeng Guiao, Chot and others. I just do not recall if the 2000 Centennial team under Coach Tim Cone was champion or 2nd or even lower.

Tapos with the Gilas 1.0 program under Coach Rajko (Eala time) eh didn't get the Olympiad slot.

Just this am, sa favorite bakery for occasional coffee/pandesal w/ palaman eh the delivery boys were asking each other on the Gilas vs Kazakhs game. And they were talking about Mighty Mouse Kap Jimmy's reaction.

I dunno, Pinoys are definitely shorter and less in physical attributes or even strength. Maybe it is the UNDERDOG mentality, more so if they see 'tiny' Kap Jimmy slugging it out with the world's best, or when Jayson whizzes by for his drives. Norwood posterizes someone with his dunk, Japeth's mamoth dunks and treys from Jeff,Gary,Jimmy,RDO,LA.

It was a featured in Pacific Rim on those makeshift basketball goals. Yup, maybe its part of what keeps the Filipino masses sane amidst the poverty and corruption.

Eto hints from Bosing MVP :

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Sep-29-14  SugarDom: I'm surprised MVP did not fire Chot Reyes. He failed to motivate Douthit. This guy Douthit helped the team before why not now?
Sep-29-14  pinoymaster77: Maybe the Ateneo connection runs deep. And Chot's success in FIBA Asia and World Cup surprises. Plus yung PUSO campaign/values drive is very Pinoy, plus yung concocted dribble drive offense Gilas style.

May insights from friends, balik Jawo style with the 2 weeks crammed training resulting in silver finish. And kung si Coach Ron Jacobs eh yung 16 pt lead vs Qatar amd 18-pt lead vs Kazakhstan eh ma-protect na thru kunat style/ milk the clock/defense.

Pero malamang iba na basketball times these days. Jawo maybe is well over 60 yrs old na, and wala sa PBA o MVP group.

Kung options like FIBA veteran Tad Baldwin or Time Cone eh ibang systems na naman dala nila, will virtually start from scratch pa. Havent seen the triangle offense success in the FIBA wars?

Or kahit yung Coach now ng Iran o Qatar eh malaking adjustments din, 2015 FIBA Asia will just be coming around soon, habang subaybay ng PBA oonferences.

Sep-29-14  pinoymaster77: For 2015 FIBA Asia :

- Eligible dapat Blatche yan kasi FIBA rules on eligibility.

- Jayson takes up the slot of Jimmy na final retirement nya. Jimmy helps out as Asst Coach. The dilemma eh sino mag mana ng CHIEF PUSO player role?

- Gary will stand down daw, good candidate dyan Ray Parks since 2-way player, sana available kung di na matuloy NBA dream.

- Paano isingit si Greg, whose slot could he take up?

Sep-29-14  torrefan: <MANILA, Philippines – “We won but we really lost.” Those were the words straight from Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes moments after they defeated Kazakhstan, 67-65, to earn their first victory of the Asian Games men’s basketball quarterfinals, and their first since opening the Asiad with a win over India.>

That is but proper. For whenever you lose, you and the filipino fans act as if you've won. Now you do the reverse: you win but grieve.

<Instead of being greeted by cheers and elation, the outcome was greeted with sorrow. The victory, while counting towards their win-loss column, wasn’t by a wide enough margin to advance to the semifinals due to complicated FIBA’s point quotient rules.>

Look at the bright side: your team can now go home and save some of the taxpayers' money.

<The Philippines, which had painted itself into a corner after back-to-back losses to Qatar and South Korea, had to win by at least 11, while rooting for South Korea to defeat Qatar in order to advance.>

You can't even beat lesser teams by one point and yet you dreamt of beating this one by 11? LOL. And now you're dreaming of playing in the Olympics next.

<“As usual we fizzled out again in the end. We didn't have enough gas to finish strong,” said Reyes after watching an 18-point lead in the third quarter disappear when it needed a blowout win.>

Too much emphasis on the heart/puso. Next time pay attention to the stomach. That's where gas is built up. With your mediocre brand of basketball, you must all plant camote and eat what you can harvest so you can have plenty of gas as you try to qualify for the Olympics!

HeMateMe: Will we see the Pino/Kazak result on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated?
Sep-29-14  kardopov: Winning isn't everything!
Sep-29-14  torrefan: yes. in international basketball competition it is the ONLY thing.
Sep-29-14  pinoymaster77: MVP speaks out. He got very low 2% result in the latest Pulse Asia survey for Vice Presidentiables, so his pet sports would continue to get his FOCUS and attention.

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Sep-30-14  pinoymaster77: JAWO will once again banner this TOP 40 plan :

http://www.spin.ph/basketball/pba/n...

Sep-30-14  pinoymaster77: Ayan, magkaroon na ng Korean kimchi sa PBA. Matutunan din sana natin yung catch and shoot / quick release nila (like sharpshooters Cho, Mon Ming goo) and layup with both left and right foot last steps. Mga nagpahirap satin na teams yung BIGs nila may tres eh.

1 million Koreans na pala andito, I do see or hear of them in the major cities and resort towns pero understanding ko eh transient lang and will eventually go to the US :

Oct-01-14  torrefan: <Philippines' first Asiad gold in Incheon applauded English.news.cn 2014-10-01 18:32:17
MANILA, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Malacanang, office of the Philippine president, congratulates Daniel Patrick Caluag for winning the country's first gold medal in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games on Wednesday.

Communications secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said Caluag has displayed remarkable talent and skills of Filipinos in the Cycling BMX event.

"He has demonstrated the Filipinos' courage and resiliency in global athletic competitions," Coloma said.>

Enough of basketball. Pour in resources to sports where Pinoys are not physically disadvantaged.

Oct-01-14  pinoymaster77: In interview of Daniel, he cited the business success of MVP and LBC, both probably support him, aside from the PSC.
Oct-02-14  pinoymaster77: Charlie Suarez is thru to the Finals after beating Jordanian opponent in the Semis, he faced a tough Mongolian in tomorrow's finals for the gold. We await word on the other 3 boxer semi-finalists on their matches this pm. Barriga goes up against a Korean while Lopez and Fernandez are the other semi-finalists.

For taekwondo, 19-year old (mukhang totoy pa daw per DZSR) barged into the Semis to assure a 4th bronze for taekwondo. Heard parts of his semis match vs Chinese, but he had early cramps in the 1st round and the Chinese got well ahead 4-0 after a point and a head kick.

As per TV5/DZSR's Dennis Principe's interview of ABAP Chair Ricky Vargas, he wished SUCCESS not only to the players but also to their families, since getting those medals would help improve their lives, and afford them to get what they want in life.

DZSR clarified afterwards that the ABAP / MVP incentives for boxing medals is ASIDE from those mandated in RA 9064. So a bronze would get 500K + 100K = 600K, a silver medal would get 1M + 500K = 1.5M, and a GOLD medal would get a WHOPPING 3M + 1M = 4M windfall ! Aba eh matindi talaga ang hirap sa training & other pagtitiis for boxing and most of these boxer-finds are from the province. Si Clark Bautista (victimized by hometown decision) eh identified ng ABAP since he was 15 yrs old and since then has been part of the natl pool.

Oct-02-14  pinoymaster77: Mentioned dito Jawo's 1990 team that got the silver :

Oct-04-14  pinoymaster77: This was posted by NA / chess organizer Noel Morales of Pinoy chess online sa FB Groups Ahedres. May nag comment pag intl event eh mahal daw reg fee. Also shared na typical $ 100 reg fee dun sa annual HD Bank Open in Vietnam, PSC Open 2013, and the Asian Conti / Pacquiao Cup 2013. Maybe dun sa recent Malaysian Chess Festival and on-going HK Open eh a bit lower.
