EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Oct-04-14  spawn2: Good news yan <pm77>. Magandang Christmas gift for local chess followers na may susundan na laro tapos within Metro Manila pa venue. Hope our local GMs and Masters can prepare really well.
Oct-04-14  SugarDom: Akala ko ba bankrupt na? :)
Oct-05-14  pinoymaster77: Important to recap the ASIAD as it will bring about even more CHANGES and MOVEs from the PSC.

Cycling had the sole gold thru BMX cycling
Wushu had 2 silvers and 1 bronze
Boxing had 1 silver and 3 bronzes
Taekwondo had 5 bronzes
Archery had 1 bronze
Karatedo had 1 bronze

Among the 10 priority sports, wushu boxing taekwondo and archery had medals, while non-pririty sports cycling and karatedo had medals and maybe will benefit from PSC's review.

Though mas level playing field, eh for measureable sports like swimming weightlifting and athletics eh malayo talaga tayo sa Asian level. Sa combat sports pa na prone to subjective judging may nakuha, like wushu, boxing, taekwondo, karatedo.

Mukhang PSC is more inclined na FOCUS and FOCUS more dun sa may medal potentials for the Asian level. Meanwhile the 2015 SEAG in Spore would be early in June.

Oct-05-14  pinoymaster77: GOOD insights from Bill Velasco.

Iba siguro program for Asiad and Olympics where FOCUSsed lang talaga sa sports na 'competitive'. There's still leeway for other NSA / sports na di prioritized, like example athletics, if some athletes make the standard.

Sa SEAG eh iba, athletics ang pinakamaraming GOLDs the last time, while kung may wushu eh dami ring golds nun, aside from boxing and taekwondo. Singapore naman ang host, medyo 'neutral' pag combat sports, ang FOCUS nila sa swimming.

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Oct-05-14  pinoymaster77: As per the SEAG 2015 site, good to see wushu is there, and there's billiards! But still no chess! These will add to medal prospects in athletics, boxing and taekwondo. BMX cycling is reportedly included, so Caluag brothers will prepare for it :

"36 sports and 402 events will feature in the 28th SEA Games Singapore 2015. The sports are aquatics (swimming, synchronised swimming, diving, waterpolo), archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, billiards & snooker, bowling, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, floorball, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, judo, netball, petanque, rowing, rugby 7s, sailing, sepak takraw, shooting, silat, softball, squash, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, dragon boat, triathlon, volleyball, wakeboard & waterski, and wushu."

Oct-07-14  spawn2: Checked line-up of Senior World Championship. Top contenders are Super GM John Nunn with 2602 followed by GM Hebden with 2540 plus.
Oct-07-14  Pulo y Gata: Why is GM Torre passing up on the chance to have a Filipino world chess champion?
Oct-07-14  pinoymaster77: Baka habang COMPETITIVE to be in the Mens Olympiad Team eh ipagpaliban pa World Seniors. Saka expanded Mgt role siguro ni AFGM sa Fianchetto, saka ETCF pa, saka personal appearances all over the country, sa pagbibigay paunlak sa mga invites.
Oct-07-14  gokusano: No RP representative in the ongoing World junior?
Oct-07-14  Pulo y Gata: <Oct-07-14 pinoymaster77: Baka habang COMPETITIVE to be in the Mens Olympiad Team eh ipagpaliban pa World Seniors. Saka expanded Mgt role siguro ni AFGM sa Fianchetto, saka ETCF pa, saka personal appearances all over the country, sa pagbibigay paunlak sa mga invites.>

Still the question remains: <Why is GM Torre passing up on the chance to have a Filipino world chess champion?>

Imagine the boost it would create to phi chess.

Oct-08-14  pinoymaster77: gokusano,
Mukhang di ka napapasyal sa Paulo Bersamina CG page.

Actually, this time ay may 5 players FIVE / LIMA na representatives ang Pinas, aside from Natl Jr champs CM Marc Nazario and WFM San Diego, eh IM Paulo and WIMs Fronda and Frayna were supported by some NCFP officials to join the campaign.

Andun sa Pau page yung mga posts / kibitzes. Saka andun sa WJCC site and chess-results.com ang names ng 5 Pinoy players.

Oct-08-14  pinoymaster77: Dun sa 2 intl events in Dec, eh may posters posted na sa FB care of Noel Morales, ganun nga informations on event name, venue and playdates. Now, both the Philippine Cup (Dec 5 to 12 at Celebrity Sports Plaza QC) and the PSC Chairman's Cup (Dec 14 to 21 at Pearl Hotel Manila) eh for the Open eh for ELO 2349 and below eh $ 150 reg fee, the TOP prize is USD 5K and may prizes up to 30th place (21st to 30th eh $250).

Dun sa Challengers section eh for 2199 and below eh $ 50 reg fee, top prize is $ 700 and prizes up to 20th place (16th to 20th get $ 50, balik taya).

May BW / GETS sana lumaro sa Challengers! Calling mga Managers, puedeng papasko na eto for the lucky player.

Sila torrefan and epistle can pay their way, may sponsor yan tiyak yun !

Oct-08-14  pinoymaster77: Sugar,
Dun sa commentary ni Mr. Pestano sa Sunstar (blog ba yun?) eh I think 'bankrupt' is not proper term, eh may major activities pa, like sending the 5 players to WJCC and having the 2 intl chess events here in Dec.

Siguro 'financial difficulties' o 'financially challenged' is more apt.

Oct-08-14  torrefan: <pinoymaster77: Important to recap the ASIAD as it will bring about even more CHANGES and MOVEs from the PSC. Cycling had the sole gold thru BMX cycling

Notice that in all these the Filipinos do not suffer from height disadvantage. Imagine the boost to Philippine sports if basketball ceases to be a sport for international competition and the money be instead poured into sports like these, including chess.

Oct-09-14  pinoymaster77: TF,
That might take a generation, and the possible #2 sport now that could be a candidate to take over is a ball sport, football.

Meantime, there's still rough dreaming for the 2015 FIBA Asia and next gen of players (Gilas Cadets) for future national teams. Tab Baldwin is tapped as consultant for TnT and SBP's U16 & below programs which is a good move!

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Oct-11-14  gokusano: So be it in basketball, pero suportahan dapat ng Gobyerno and ibang Sport Fed. Hindi balanse ang pagtrato nila.
Oct-11-14  SugarDom: <pinoy>, why the Azkals did not play in the Asian games?

Syempre, when the politics sucks, the sports will also suck.

Oct-11-14  pinoymaster77: Sugar,
Nung 2013 SEAG, di pinayagan ang PFF lumahok, that was U23 level kasi. PFF tried to re-appeal and in so doing there was friction na with sports officials. PSC sounded off the Azkals for the Asian Games but PFF turned it down na.

http://www.spin.ph/sports/football/...

Oct-11-14  SugarDom: In other words, napulitika na naman. Pinakabwisit talaga etong uncle ni Aquino, si Peping. Golds and medals daw does not matter...
Oct-11-14  pinoymaster77: Sugar,

On football, could also be related dun sa pag upgrade ng Rizal football field, di natuloy FIFA project for that...

Football naman may sariling mundo under FIFA and could be the most well monied sport. They can proceed with the regular AFC competitions, and sitout this current POC / PSC regime.

Oct-11-14  pinoymaster77: Sorry we have to take it up here, but since NCFP nowadays (Pichay out of power) is heavily dependent on the PSC budget, it is affected by the overall sports development.

I shared before just my own projection that NCFP/chess would be hard put to receive the same 15M budget allocation for 2015.

With Malacanang castigating the PSC for the Asiad debacle, the guideline is reiterated to allocate the available budget (roughly 300M annually, about 7th in SE Asia) on the 'priority sports' where we can WIN GOLD.

Now, this conflicts with PSC Chair Garcia's recent declaration to go for 3rd or 4th in the 2015 SEAG in Spore which is in June na, since this needs a lot of sports chipping in for the gold medals, and 8 months to go na lang.

Now, depending on who wins in 2016, I just realized AFGM could really help sports more if he gets appointed as a PSC Commissioner. If I understand right, chess had better sailings when PSC Comm Akiko Thompson (ex-athlete who understands) was assigned to chess.

Oct-11-14  SugarDom: What makes you think it's not a long shot that AFGM will get appointed as PSC chair?
Oct-11-14  Talimuzakh: <In other words, napulitika na naman. Pinakabwisit talaga etong uncle ni Aquino, si Peping. Golds and medals daw does not matter...>

Hehehe, kapag namamayagpag ang politics, laglag lahat incl sports. And dirty, hidden agenda politics is a big biznez sa Pinas...kaya just continue dribbling the basketball for someday all Filipino basketeers will be as tall as their naturally tall global counterparts, thus doing away with the temporary solution of naturalizing naturally tall, talent laden American big brothers to do manning the paint on court battle. As tall as their global basketeers, ...we just do not know if they would be as skilled and talented as well...with their names NOT sounding like half-baked foreyngers from a distant land.

Iyang si Sandok, bulok na politika sa sports ang palakad nyan. Katulad nang bulok na politika ng Kalbo'ng sutil na inutil jan sa Malakanyang...

Oct-12-14  pinoymaster77: There are moves to amend the law governing the PSC to ensure minimum of 1B funding annually.

But with increased pressure to the PSC to have the proper program. 1 of the goals is to have training centers in Luzon Visayas and Mindanao.
