EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Oct-13-14  pinoymaster77: TF,

Basketball still as popular as ever, inspite pa eto ng Gilas debacle at the Asiad! Tapos Freddie Roach had a change of heart and allowing Manny to play in the KIA opener, for the sake of the fans! Even for just a minute or so...

http://www.spin.ph/basketball/pba/n...

Oct-13-14  torrefan: And that is the tragedy of Philippine sports. The country all agog over a sport its people can never excel in.
Oct-13-14  pinoymaster77: I think it still has something to do with the Pinoy's UNDERDOG mentality, thats why they specially go GAGA over exploits of the 'small' Pinoy players below 6 feet.

Back in the days pa nila Yoyong Martirez, 'haba haba' Abarrientos, Miego to Arnaiz/Fabiosa and present day sila Alapag and Castro. Its also evident in other sports, like Chieffy in football, and Pacman in boxing.

Oct-14-14  pinoymaster77: I've heard sa DZSR yung PSA Sports Forum and special guest Philcycling Prez/Cong Bambol, and may commentary din Red Dumuk.

Among the 10 previous priority sports eh dropped na swimming and weightlifting, tapos Red shared he heard from PSC na wrestling would also be dropped, so 7 priority sports will remain na lang.

Philcycling fully riding on the SOLE Asiad gold of Daniel Caluag in BMX cycling. Medyo pride chicken din pala Bambol, all or nothing daw di sya papayag na BMX cycling lang gawing priority sports but also the 3 types of cycling events (road, track and massed start ba yun). He was also quoted as 'kung gusto ng PSC sa amin',and 'kung ayaw nila, eh ok kung ganun'.

He also cited cycling's supporters are MVP Foundation, SMART, LBC, Air21 and Philcycling.

Personal opinion ko, eh di congruent goals yung focussed priority sports dun sa declared PSC goal to go for 3rd/4th place in the 2015 SEAG in Spore, to do that kasi will need contributions of GOLD medals from a wide variety of sports. Ang madami talagang medals at stake eh swimming, shooting and athletics. To follow yung combat sports - boxing, taekwondo, wushu

Oct-15-14  spawn2: Chess could be a priority sport but one issue is that host country which do not have a very strong chess program tend to drop it from the games to be played. Kung laruin man, me mga kasama na other chess variants (SEA Games 2014 Myanmar).

Sayang yung sa Incheon, Korea na di nilaro ang chess. We were coming from a podium finish (silver) in the 2010 Asian Games.

Hopefully, sa 2015 SEA Games to be hosted by Singapore, laruin uli ang chess.

Oct-15-14  SugarDom: Wala daw chess sa Singapore sa 2015...
Oct-16-14  spawn2: <Sugardom>

Science..medyo surprising since chess gets goverment and private funding in Singapore.

Oct-16-14  pinoymaster77: Heard sa DZSR sa pa-meeting called by Chef-de-Mission Julian Camacho (also the Wushu President) eh the NSAs are given until Oct 29 to submit their proposed number of athletes and requested trainings. Then PSC will review.

Wala daw BMX cycling and Mr Camacho stated its hard to appeal already since the list of sports eh firmed up na last April - I guess ganun na din chances ng chess, di na ma appeal.

Parang ang GOAL / TARGET yata in mind eh 40 to 45 GOLDs, but not sure this is good for what place?

Malamang daw mas bigyan ng exposure and leeway ang youth, since meron na ding Asian Youth Games and Youth Olympic Games. May earlier talks din kasi na gawing purely U23 na SEAG, with some overaged athletes allowed for some team events.

That makes sense on the youth exposure.

Oct-16-14  pinoymaster77: Would like to commend the TEAM of DESTINY, the NU Bulldogs!

Some years back, we've heard of the Owner's strategy of tapping a major supplier to be in-charge of each sport. And so we heard suddenly of competitive offers from NU for the top athlete-prospects.

1 by 1 na dumating ang titles, starting with baseball, 2x na with cheerdancing, HS Chess, womens basketball. Then lets take up the SAGA of the Mens basketball team.

Before this season, their star Ray Parks opted out of his final year of eligibility to pursue his NBA dream, thats another story.

Kada season na di umabot NU sa finals (due to heavy investment in players, specially Parks) eh there were always calls for Coach 'E' Eric Altamirano's head. In the end owner Hans Sy and Athletic Director Junel Baculi stuck with Coach E.

NU went thru the wringer, from one time leading in the elims, it found itself tied for 4th/5th and had to undergo playoff vs UE for the 4th Semis Slot. Then had to overcome the twice-to-beat advantage of the Ateneo Eagles & Ravena and they indeed beat them twice. Then in the Finals being newbies, they lost Game 1 to FEU, but regrouped. Yung Game 2 eh record attendance at close to 25K fans then yung final game 3 eclipsed the 25K mark for a new UAAP attendance record! Good for the UAAP

Oct-19-14  pinoymaster77: The 3rd DLHSI chess team event in La Salle Dasma was just nearby and had a low toll via Carmona so took a peek, and was pleasantly surprised with the RECORD turnout of 51 teams! DLHSI organizers and Coach Roel Abelgas Jr must have been ecstatic. Indication din eto na chess in the Non-Masters circles is alive and well, we can see in the pinoychessinforme portal all sorts of chess event announcements, including ONLINE chess events (blitz/bullet chess).

Announcement was months ahead and good sked in between the NCAA and UAAP, so schools can justify as part of their training. NU registered 5 teams, while Adamson and UST had 3 each.

Those with private sponsors had catchy names as well, like the champ Team Boleros and 1 team was called the Expendables (wound up 2nd or 3rd).

Familiar names/ chess friends Jayson Visca spearheaded a Cebu team, Jobert was top board for Frisco, Ice was also top board, while Zeus was bd2 for Emerson Engg. Privately sponsored Knights if (Engr Vic) Tumambing and Padua team featured mainly Laguna players. Yung mga may kaibigan na walang rating o mababa rating sa playing strength ay naglabasan na din.

We may expect to see more chess team events due to the large DLHSI turnout.

Maybe ETCF could also look into such chess team projects.

Oct-19-14  pinoymaster77: Mga 3 weeks to go na lang pala for next WJCC, sa Nov7 daw.

Talagang trying to save Sochi, dami news describing it as a ghost town after the Winter Olympics :

http://www.vnews.com/lifetimes/1394...

http://www.asianage.com/chess/viswa...

Oct-26-14  spawn2: Pag pasok siguro ng November eh bibilis na ang mga araw para sa pinakahihintay na two (2) Intl tourneys dito sa Pinas.

Hopefully, NCFP can plan for next year and get private support to have at least one intl tourney every quarter.

This will give chance to local players who are seeking for norms and elo points to prepare and not spend so much going out of the country.

Noticed that our players are going to HK, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand to participate. Mahina siguro P 30k (kahit na may sponsor)total spend if you go out of the country. Kaya kung dito sa Pinas gagawin eh malaking tipid na. Registration Fee and local hotel accommodation na lang. If strategic ang location eh pwede na uwian.

Oct-28-14  pinoymaster77: Sana nga mangyari yan spawn2, 1 intl event every quarter would be a boon for local chess players aspiring for Masters titles.
Oct-28-14  Nf3em: malapit na naman pala ang bd namin ni AFGM, 04 sya at ako naman 06 ...

by the way, I heard nagpunta ng Bauan, Batangas si AFGM at sa Brgy Bolo (sa lugar namin yun) pa!?

How true brod <Alex>?

;-)

Oct-28-14  spawn2: Tama ka bro Danny. He was invited to grace the opening of a chess event
Oct-28-14  Nf3em: Sayang! Wala ako dun, hehehe ... ;-)
Oct-30-14  spawn2: Chinese Filipino Business Club Inc. in partnership with the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation will hold the 1st CFBCI - ETCF Chess Tournament on November 8, 2014 at Binondo.

This is the crowning activity of the CFBCI - ETCF Chess in School collaboration. Eight (8) schools are expected to participate.

On November 9, 2014 GM Eugene Torre has been invited as guest speaker for the opening of the SM Masinag Rapid Chess Tournament. Coach Ryan Carandang who is headcoach of the Ateneo Grade School team is the organizer. Chief Arbiter is IA Erwin Carag and Arbiter is Mr. Alex Dinoy.

Oct-30-14  SugarDom: Like.
Oct-30-14  Pulo y Gata: <Chinese Filipino Business Club Inc. in partnership with the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation will hold the 1st CFBCI - ETCF Chess Tournament on November 8, 2014 at Binondo.>

What kind of event is this, please?

Oct-30-14  epistle: a chess event, i presume.
Oct-31-14  SugarDom: There is something basically wrong with Filipino culture when they are happy to lose their best players to other countries and shamelessly proud of their contribution to the loss. This is also the reason why we never won gold in the Olympiads and perform poorly in ASIAN and SEA games. It's the loser mentality we have.

Kudos to GMET for playing in 23 Olympiads for the Philippines.

Oct-31-14  spawn2: <PyG>

Per text of CFBCI, we already have 67 players from the different schools that attended the chess seminar conducted by ETCF who confirmed that they will play. We expect to see at least 80 players in the tournament.

The tournament will have a Grad Prix format which will have both team and individual tourney happening in a single tournament.

<Sugardom>

To nitpick, its 22 as a player and 1 as team captain/coach:)

Oct-31-14  pinoymaster77: Since Nov na, and next month na pala yung twin intl events, eh which one kaya laruan ni AFGM. First 20 GMs daw eh free reg.

Maigi rin posted sa chessdom ang invitation ng NCFP

http://www.chessdom.com/philippine-...

Oct-31-14  SugarDom: <pinoy> WS can still qualify in the next candidates tournament by finishing top 2 in the World Cup.
Nov-01-14  pinoymaster77: Sugar,

Aside from WC / Candidates, eh would like to see GM Wes' official sojourn dun sa circle ng elite chess events.

BTW, top 2 at WC sounds tough, but thats another barometer come the WC 2015.

Does Wes already have a slot to WC 2015 by virtue of being a top 10 player? Umabot naman yata sa Nov FIDE ratings.
