EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Nov-04-14  pinoymaster77: Also in the same DZSR sports round-up this am, per PSA Forum guesting of NCFP TD Jayson, the PhP 6M intl events are being staged to help Pinoys become GMs.

Master guests from Armenia, Germany,Belgium and India are expected. (interested to know their names soon).

Natl pool players (probably means those with PSC allowances?) are REQUIRED to play, and I did hear the names of GMs Sadorra Barbosa Paragua Laylo Torre and Antonio (would be interested who among the US-based can make it).

Focus would also be on youth GM candidates IMs Paulo and Jem. Let us also see who among our Asian Youth reps are in good form, maybe they can continue their campaign in Dec, for the only intl chess events to be staged here this year, pagkakataon na.

And sana schools/sponsors can send our youth / U23s to play in those 2 intl events.

Nov-04-14  pinoymaster77: Nasa Philstar and yahoo news na, 2 Georgian GMs confirmed daw, and malamang daw mga 20 foreign GMs. Eto kayang Georgians eh mga dating suki nung GMA / Pichay Cups time, baka may maningil pa sa local GM ah :

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Nov-05-14  epistle: the two Georgians referred to are Barbosa and Paragua. They are members of the Georgina Wilson Fans Club.
Nov-05-14  Nf3em: <Epi> sounds like not himself ;-)
Nov-05-14  pinoymaster77: Kahit papaano yung GMA / Pichay Cups series is part of chess lore na, it helped give the avenue for foreign and Pinoy players, dyan more than once pinakawalan ng China ang kanilang 'new products'. Naka 5 years plus ba, and usually sa Duty Free ang venue nuon :

- Yung sa 2 Georgians, mga dating suki eh sila GMs Mchedisvili and Gagunashvili and wouldn't be surprised kung sila ang babalik, na miss siguro Phils. Peeking at their ELO so Mched na ang SuperGM.

- Other foreign Masters who come to mind are GM Kotanjian (is he same GM who became Armenian champ?), Ismagambetov nung youngsters and former Kazakh top board Kazhghalayev with whom AFGM had a memorable endgame triumph.

- For the Chinese, nuon yatang may edition sa Subic and some BW trekked there to watch GM Wes play eh duon lumabas sa limelight si Yu Yangyi. Per Bobby's Chesspiece, latest World Jrs champ GM Lu got his final GM norm in a Pichay Cup edition in 2011.

- For Pinoys, memory test ulit AFGM won a GMA Cup edition in what year ba, 2008 or 09 or later? Did GM Wes ever win a GMA / Pichay Cup edition? I dont really recall a Pinoy clinching his GM title here, karamihan eh sa overseas campaign nakuha eh.

Nov-05-14  pinoymaster77: Was just reading Bobby's latest Chesspiece titled 'Wesley So Now USA' and keyed in on the US Chess League where may teams din pala GMs Ino Oli and Mac. Naging interested na din Bobby ah, this internet-based league was also a project idea espoused by sugardom, may isa tayong naging internet match some years back vs Toril club of metrolirot :

"What has Wesley been up to lately? He is playing in the US Chess League for the St. Louis Arch Bishops. The League is played over the Internet (Internet Chess Club -- you can visit their site at www.chessclub.com) and features a lot of titled players, including Filipino GMs Barbosa, Paragua (both playing for the Connecticut Dreadnoughts) and Ino Sadorra (Dallas Destiny).

Speaking of the Chess League, I am surprised that it is not more well known. It is the only nationwide chess league in the US and currently has 18 teams whose members include many of the American top players. Unlike the European leagues where the teams are mostly populated with foreigners, in the US you have to be a resident of the cities that you represent.

With the proliferation of Internet cafes in the country, it would be quite easy to organize a similar chess league in the Philippines. Such a league would ensure that our National Masters have constant tournament practice and, for the younger players, it fosters a thriving chess development climate in the country. I just may organize it one day."

Nov-06-14  spawn2: Hope makabawi Vishy
Nov-06-14  pinoymaster77: Today na ba Game 1?

Checked this out sa chessdom :

http://www.chessdom.com/gm-smagin-m...

Nov-07-14  spawn2: Tomorrow raw ang Game 1! Vishy will have to be more adventurous this time around. Drop the "am ok with a draw and see you next game" attitude.

Sa game 1 pa lang, he must send a clear signal to Magnus that it is a different Anand the Carlsen is facing.

Nov-07-14  spawn2: Ito ang isa pang masarap pag-usapan!

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Nov-07-14  torrefan: Why change the coach? Dapat players ang palitan, not the coach. Kahit NBA coach pa kunin dyan olats pa rin yan lagi.
Nov-07-14  spawn2: <torrefan>

Pagbigyan mo na kaming makaJawo na makita muli si the Big J magcoach:)

Nov-07-14  Pulo y Gata: The Big J has his eyes set on...politics, again.

Kinakamada nilang makuha yang coaching stint na yan. Floater yang style na yan. Wag daw pangunahan, but he raring to have the spot!

Long game ang kamada-as a chess player, I appreciate that.

Nov-07-14  spawn2: Somewhere in Binondo..the 4th Round of the CFBCI-ETCF Chess Tournament is about to start.

11 schools composed of 108 players are trying to bag home team and individual awards.

Nov-08-14  pinoymaster77: PYG.

Hmmm, napagisip-isip ko tuloy related kaya pagbanat ni El Presidente kay Chot in many media articles. Then may nabasa din ako from Abe King (nasa US). Then di ko nabasa article, but the title was quoting Adornado 'that he was willing to serve (maybe as shooting coach)'. Maybe that generation eyeing some form of comeback?

Lets wait and see, latest I've read the SEARCH committee is about to embark on their work, and they need to do it FAST. Sa Sept na ang FIBA Asia 2015 and sa China pa na may hinandang youth-flavored squad.

Drawback lang kay Jawo is since leaving Ginebra in a huff, he's out of the basketball circles, and definitely not in the inner circles of MVP group. For Chot, latest interviews kay Coaches Tim and Tab eh they would consider the job but they're still going for Chot as best man for the job.

ABANGAN...

Nov-08-14  pinoymaster77: On the first CFBCI-ETCF chess event eh congratulations! Per sms shares from Lilet upon reaching home eh Jubilee Christian Academy daw ang champ.

When I joked kung may FREE siopao siomai champoy and Chinese tea eh the reply was may free lunch and merienda mga players and officials. Aba masuwerte nga, wala pa akong na attend na chess tournament na ganun.

IMPORTANT ang ChiFil sector, di man makakakita ng next Wesley So, eh next young Master eh very possible. As we know the ChiFil community got the resources, so if we can have businessmen, ChiFil community leaders, parents, players and sponsoring Companies into chess, eh they're very capable of staging even bigger events in the near future.

Great start by ETCF in their chess projects, this is also 'chess-in-schools' concept for the ChiFil circles.

Nov-09-14  pinoymaster77: Sakin lang, konting tweaking yung Gilas 2.0, eto line-up in mind :

Blatche
Fajardo
Slaughter
Aguilar
De Ocampo
Pingris
Williams or Abueva (another energy player)
Norwood (ace defender, understudy Rosser)
Chan or Baracael or Parks
Tenorio
Castro
Barocca

Understudies for PG sila Casio, Lee, Alas

Medyo mas kumulang sa outside shooting, sanayin na din sila Greg Junemar Japeth and Kelly na pumukol sa labas.

Coaching TEAM : Jawo Chot Tab

Plus the usual MVP coaching team support - Jong, Norman, Nash Chot's son atbp

Nov-09-14  pinoymaster77: Nabasa ko lang sa FB na Magnus won game 2, sana makabawi pa Anand
Nov-09-14  spawn2: Still a long way to go but am quite surprised with how GM Anand went under in game 2.

Am expecting him to open with another d4 tomorrow. Will see if GM Carlsen will repeat his Gruenfeld Def.

Nov-10-14  pinoymaster77: Ive just read this, Coach Chot asked his name be not included by the search committee, he ack its time to move on. Hats off to Coach Chot !

http://www.interaksyon.com/interakt...

Nov-10-14  pinoymaster77: Nabasa ko article na eto ni Bill Velasco, outlining the factors to consider :

http://www.philstar.com/sports/2014...

Nov-10-14  Pulo y Gata: He was eased out. All these time he was saying it's an honor to serve the country through Gilas and that he will not shy away from the duty if he gets picked again. Why this sudden turnaround? Because some forces are working to get that spot for someone.
Nov-10-14  spartan1998: Good day po! Here are the results of the Chinese-Filipino Business Club - Eugene Torre Chess Foundation Rapid Chess Tournament last Saturday:
