EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Thank you for posting the results!

Nov-10-14  pinoymaster77: Sana may makita tayong ChiFil player trying out sa Age Group qualifiers next year.

Saka sa mga regular rapid events sa Mmla.

Nov-10-14  pinoymaster77: Dun sa HOT sports item on selection of Gilas 3.0 Coach, SBP Exec Sonny Barrios was guest of TJ Manotoc last night in The Score in ABS CBN Sports, Sonny didn't want to share more details on his thoughts since the Selection committee will just start their meetings today, but 1 main point is familiarity / experience in the intl basketball scene which is key nowadays

From the signs/ media releases there will probably be more MVP / RSA cooperation but heavily pa din with MVP group since they're bankrolling and in charge of the SBP.

http://www.spin.ph/basketball/pba/n...

Nov-10-14  SugarDom: Chot Reyes can learn from Erik Spo when having disagreements with a player. He knows how to keep a team together...
Nov-10-14  lakers4sho: Which names are being thrown around as candidates? Tim Cone? Yeng Guiao? Although I feel that it will be chosen from the MVP group of teams. Maybe Norman Black.
Nov-11-14  spawn2: Looks like GM Anand will win tonight. Hope he does to make the match more interesting.
Nov-11-14  kamagong24: isang pagpupugay kay GM Torre!!! idolo ko pa rin siya mula noon hanggang ngayon! salamat sa pagbibigay inspirasyon sa mga ordinaryong chessfans na tulad ko :)
Nov-11-14  spawn2: Aside from the two Intls events in December, Tagaytay City agreed to host the Asian Juniors Under 20 Championship latter part of November.

That's three (3) International events in a span of 2 month.

This will be good for our local players.

Nov-11-14  spawn2: GM Vishy's win last night will be a huge confidence booster for the Indian GM. If GM Carlsen opens with e4 tonight, GM Anand may opt for a defense not hinge on e5.
Nov-11-14  pinoymaster77: Sa mga TV sports news lalo na TV5 and ABS CBN eh sa mga media interviews at random sa mga fans eh hati kila Jawo and Tim Cone. Pero sakin, isa ding objective candidate si Tab Baldwin coz of his wide intl experience. Saka he was consultant during the FIBA Asia, FIBA Worlds and Asian Games, so alam na alam nya Gilas program and may continuity. Interesting article din ito, Jawo's agent mentions ok sya with MVP...

Nov-11-14  pinoymaster77: Checked out chessdom and chessbomb, na convert nga Vishy to a win and naka level sa match, its become interesting!

Nice call by spawn2 on the position

Nov-11-14  pinoymaster77: Eto naman interviews kay Coach Tab, to get idea how he thinks and on his experience :

Nov-11-14  pinoymaster77: The signal here is some of the Gilas players are feeling wornout (esp RDO and Jason pala), pero I have mixed feelings, kelangan kasi mag champion sa FIBA Asia 2015 sa China for the SOLE Olympic slot.

Tingin ko pa din yung published squad earlier can do the JOB for next year, then if will go Olympics eh train the ff squad, o for the 2019 World Cup hopefully to be done here :

Blatche (or younger guy pa)
Fajardo
Slaughter
Aguilar or Von Opstal
Parks
Paras
Ravena
Abueva
Barocca
Casio
Belo
Del Rosario

Nov-12-14  pinoymaster77: Game 4 was Sicilian game and ended in draw, 'dry' game daw but Magnus tried to squeeze out a win unsuccessfully :

http://www.livemint.com/Consumer/t7...

Nov-12-14  kamagong24: it was not a dry game, it was rather exciting, Carlsen is trying to stir Anand away from his opening prep, Anand responded accurately and forced Carlsen into a passive position early in the opening, perhaps Carlsen could try closed sicilian or B23 variation in favor of more activity, instead of KIA against the sicilian

Carlsen did try to squeeze out a win and came up with moves g4 and h4 in the endgame, but Anand refuted with Qd2 and forced Carlsen to opt for a perpetual check

i think what's 'dry'in the match was Carlsen's dry response from the reporters' dry questions in their dry press conference :)

Nov-13-14  pinoymaster77: Hmmm the Gilas 3.0 coaching search continues to electrify the sporting world. Benjie and Ronnie were part of the silver medal winning Asiad team pala, and experienced first hand Jawo's touch.

Shall we start taking a survey, with the choices being 'The Big J' Jaworski, Tim Cone and Tab Baldwin ?

http://www.spin.ph/basketball/news/...

Nov-13-14  SugarDom: The Big J, although the sentimental favorite, has been out of the scene for too long. Tim Cone will be the right choice...
Nov-13-14  spawn2: <Sugardom>

Then, Living Legend (of basketball) will have to tap the right seconds. I dont think it be that hard to adopt for him. He can just tweak Coach Chot's system a little since it worked. What he is bringing to the table is his ability to motivate and bring out the best in his players.

Nov-13-14  spawn2: <Sugardom>

Pre, it should be "I dont think it will be that hard to adapt for him" and learn new tricks required to make the team successful.

Based on experience, iba yung handling ng magaling na boss (in terms of technical know how) versus a boss that can inspire and motivate his people.

Aguilar will definitely learn a lot once he is handled by the Big J.

Asian Games 1990, two weeks practice..silver finish. Pwedeng sobrang tagal na but Tower of Power and the Point Laureate who know their basketball am sure have made a total assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of Jaworski but still came out with the conclusion that he can handle the job.

Nov-13-14  spawn2: I also like Tim Cone. If its not Jawo, Cone is it for me.
Nov-13-14  pinoymaster77: Very interesting. First of all, the search committee was formed I think when MVP got a 'we bulong' inputs from PBA Comm Salud to echo the sentiments of the PBA brass, which would include key stakeholders RSA/SMC, RoS and Alaska who have some of the key players, specially the BIG men.

As to the current 'TOP 3' :

1. Tim Cone - he's the winningest PBA coach. But will SMC release him? Not adviceable to bring in the triangle as the whole team can only get together for 2 months, after the PBA conferences. And he's not with the MVP group, but Chot's pal.

2. BIG J Jaworski - if he gets MVP's nod, he will be supported by MVP guys like Chot Jong Norman Tab atbp. Yup, heard his main ace is being a 'master motivator' as his players share, thats why he also admires FilAm NBA Coach Erik. He's neither SMC/RSA or MVP Group. Isa pang point from marketing point of view, Jawo would bring in more popularity and following for the Gilas program. This still jibes with MVP group's business interests which are in the services sector (utilities, telecoms, tollways, hospitals etc) catering to the general public.

3. Tab Baldwin - technically, in terms of FIBA intl experience he is actually the MOST equipped. But Im sure when MVP and Chot have spoken and Jawo gets the nod, he will support as a pro. Anyway, theres still a chance for 2019 World Cup down the road, or even the 2017 FIBA Asia kung yun ang sked, o baka 2018 na yun.

WHOAA, what a TOUGH job for the search committee, reportedly they will need to come up with the shortlist by next week.

https://ph.sports.yahoo.com/news/al...

Nov-13-14  pinoymaster77: Another good insight from Coach Tab. For the 2017 o 2018 qualifiers pala for the World Cup, FIBA Asia and Oceania will not be 'totally merged' but a total of 7 slots will be at stake, meaning Australia and New Zealand would also contend for those slots !

Dun nga pala sa isang idea shared by Lilet sa private chats eh why not the Danding/Ron Jacobs formula for NCC, eh why not a team together for 4 to 5 years? Tho yung kay Toroman somewhat ganun eh naging mestizo na din at the end when they sought PBA players as reinforcements. This can also be done thru the Junior Gilas program which would include Ravena Parks Belo Del Rosario, Von Opstal and Kobe Paras among others.

Nov-13-14  Iskubadayb: Kumusta po mga bradidik. Belated muna ako kay alamat. MIA, ngayon lang nakapuga.

We have an exciting championship e basketbol ang pinaguusapan nyo!

Nov-14-14  spawn2: Master Isku,

Nice to see you drop by:)

Ke Vishy ako dito since halos kaedad ko plus me exposure sya dito sa Pinas.

Nov-14-14  Iskubadayb: Uy, bradidik... paalis na nga ako e. Nice to see you. Kay bumbay din ako. Basta maganda ang mga laro e kahit sino manalo ay oki lang. Pisakin ni bradidik yan sa short match pag team kami HIHI!

Kumusta na lang dyan. Sandals na muna. :)
