EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Dec-01-14  kardopov: Samboy is one of those players I admire so much. He is a gentleman on and off the court. But he is truly a dragon while playing. His skill is remarkable, a sight to behold. Maybe he overdid himself playing at his advance age. But what can we do? This guy truly loves basketball and always give his 100% whenever he plays be it an official 9game or just an exhibition. The injuries he suffered are clear testament to his hardworking and devil-may-care style. Let's pray for his recovery.
Dec-02-14  pinoymaster77: Yup, on the dual events to be held sa Celebrity Sports eh this Sat na yata start. Checked the NCFP site, ganun pa din Participant's list as of Nov 25 eh.

Magkaalaman na who among the overseas based Masters can make it, and then afterwards may slight clean-up ng PSC athletes' rolls. May iba ding nakalista na committed to play in Malaysia, may kasabay kasi.

The Phil delegation will be spearheaded by our Tromso Olympians (except I think for GM Jay), and joined by GMs Joey Rich and GM norm seekers IMs Yap Jem Haridas Joel AbelgasJr.

All the BEST to our players!

Dec-02-14  pinoymaster77: Nice article on Samboy :

Dec-02-14  pinoymaster77: Just had to SHARE this article as I've seen all those memorables national teams on TV! Well, even the 1973 ABC win here Phil vs Korea under Coach Tito Eduque.

Remember those stints, the 1982 ABC Youth under Coach Jacobs here in Manila starring Calma Almario Alfarero Mendoza, the 1985 ABC under Coach Ron with naturalized players Still and Moore, the 1986 Asiad team under Coach Lipa starring young & collegiate stars and the 1990 Asiad team under Coach Jawo :

Dec-03-14  pinoymaster77: Final round this 3pm, but yesterday was able to witness yet again an new emergent Woman player in Mikee Charlene Suede of UP / Makati. In rd7 in the am, she upended India's World Youth champ Ivana Maria Furtado for the latter's first defeat in the Asian Jrs, then that was Mikee's 5th straight win after an opening round loss to very young Jerlyn San Diego, and a 2nd round draw. Tapos sayans sila nila WFM Tonette San Diego magkatapat sa top board in penultimate round 8 !

It was intense, exciting, seesawing, double edged battle, in fact at some point while watching the venue projector with FI Lilet, eh I thought WFM Tonette was winning na. Tactician talaga Mikee, di ko na nakita yung ibang hugot moves nya, to salvage the win. TIP yun, i-replay nyo yung game, of course it doesn't capture that WFM Tonette was behind on time by 10 to 15 minutes kaya di na makita best continuations for the attack.

And so we will see a NEW WIM for Phils in Mikee Suede, plus 1 WGM norm pa. Tama assessment ni FI Lilet and nagdilang anghel.

Heard Sir Toti mentioning AFGM Torre would visit today or tomorrow. Pero it was announced after the final round tonite (starts 3pm) eh closing ceremony na. Some kasi will proceed to QC for the 2 intl events, and most of the foreign guests will fly out maybe tomorrow.

Dec-03-14  Pulo y Gata: Mikee Suede is not a new player. She's been playing well, even ahead of WFM San Diego- only that Tonette grabbed her opportunities very well. There are three Suede sisters, all chess players. But the youngest one will most likely be the strongest among them.
Dec-04-14  pinoymaster77: For the PICC set to start this Sat (barring inclement weather) at the Celebrity Sports Plaza, may latest list as of Dec 3, nadagdag pa Russian GM Demchenko 2596 and Belarussian GM Stupak 2557. Magiging 7 na 'astig' foreigh GM guests na from 4 countries. Handa naman kaya ang Pinoy delegation to score some upsets, just like what Dave Elorta did to GM Rakhmanov in the last PSC Open? Abangan !! Ilang tulog na lang...

Sa Challengers, as anticipated eh 71 listed na, mas madami pa nagbakasakals and try kuha pamasko...

Dec-04-14  pinoymaster77: Manila Standard staff 1 of media based in Tagaytay during the event, here's the report after the penultimate round 8 last night :

http://manilastandardtoday.com/2014...

Dec-05-14  spawn2: Rd 1 today of PICC today. Goodluck GM Genius and the rest of the Philippine players
Dec-06-14  spawn2: Nice 1st rd win by GM Torre with black against NM Narquinden Reyes. Congrats also to the other Pinoys who won like IM Bersamina, GMs Laylo, Antonio, Gomez, Barbosa and Bitoon.

2nd rd eh mabigats kalaban nila GMs Joey, Darwin and Euge.

Dec-06-14  pinoymaster77: Meron na sa chess-results.com, wala pa livegames and PGNs.

2 rounds bukas, stay safe

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr154...

Dec-07-14  spawn2: GM Torre will face GM Popov, top seed in the ongoing Phil Intl Chess Competition.

GM Popov will handle the white pieces.

Good luck GM Eugene

Dec-08-14  kardopov: Tough luck for afgm. He's been in the roller coaster because of stiff opposition. Hope he gets back on the winning track.
Dec-08-14  spawn2: <kards> he will have his chance this morning against IM Haridas Pascua with white.

this is a 10 rd tournament, there is still time to recover.

Dec-09-14  allan.dinglasan: What happen to Torre- Haridas match?
Dec-09-14  pinoymaster77: Draw AFGM vs Hari, then he just won over IM Bancod in just concluded rd6 to rise to 3.5/6, next bukas 3pm in rd7 eh vs GM Laylo
Dec-09-14  pinoymaster77: At just past the halfway mark after 6 rounds, eh for our GMs with positive ELO gains so far are GMs JP Rich Joey Eugene and Dar, Oli is just breakeven while Ino is bleeding double digits loss.

Pero as shared nga with spawn2, mabababa na ELO ng GMs natin but they are hard pressed to improve, this may also be indicative of their current strengths. I still believe NCFP should now STEP IT UP and implement its 'ideas', now that chess is a NEW priority sport.

Hopefully, our GMs and Masters have also built up on their stamina and do better in these last 4 rounds spread over the next 3 days. May susunod pa right after this.

May Indian tournament in New Delhi India by Jan, maybe aside from couple of GMs like before, eh send also GM candidate sa mga IM aspirants natin.

Dec-09-14  pinoymaster77: Checked out the Johor Open, foursome pala etong Indian IMs na sila Nitin 2347, Anurag 2437, Dhopade 2418 and Sharma 2380. Also noted they have a GM Suri Vaibhav 2551 #15 born 1997.

Just observing, PHI will never get to their level of chess activities in decades, as their chess boom occurred during the long reign of Vishy, and they have a nationwide chess-in-schools program.

The observation though that their youth players are overrated, and just by reputation was proven during the recent Asian Jrs triumph of Mikee Suede. This indicates that just with a little more finetuning eh Pinoys can catch up. We have SO MANY youth events every year and the topnotchers are identified, it is more on the 'finishing school' to polish their games and nurture them to attain the FM then IM then GM titles.

Dec-10-14  spawn2: GM Eugene backed in the hunt with a win against IM Bancod and a draw with GM Laylo. Three more rounds. 3 out of 3 will definitely give him the chance to land on a podium finish.

He plays IM Narayanan tomorrow in rd 8.

Dec-11-14  Nf3em: kumusta mga kaibigan, Ok ba kayo riyan?

MC ;-)

Dec-11-14  wordfunph: mukhang inaantok si aydol Eugene dito sa kuha nya :)

http://en.chessbase.com/post/vishy-...

ayos lang, brader Dan.

Dec-11-14  LDS2011: Helo!chess friends.baka naman po matutulungan nyo ako sa konti ko problema...hindi po ito pera,hehe...sana may magreply so i can share this little prob of mine.thanks.
Dec-11-14  kamagong24: chess puzzle ba yan

Dec-11-14  LDS2011: ganito po yun.i am a chess teacher in our place in balayan, batangas.hindi naman po sa pagyayabang mga stcaa player po ang mga naging student ko.
