EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Dec-18-14  pinoymaster77: Earlier on, I mistakenly link up the vaunted Torre Attack to AFGM and found out meron palang Mexican GM. AFGM has his own variation in some other opening.

Nice chessbase article on the Mexican GM Torre.... sana di ma withdraw / recall etong article :

http://en.chessbase.com/post/rememb...

Dec-21-14  pinoymaster77: In the remaining 10 days of 2014, bago maging lalong matrapik the most I recall for the AFGM highlights is winning the BOGM / Natl Chess Championships yet again. And for the CALL of DUTY, he's got the Phil's back whenever he is needed, so he made another record appearance at the Tromso Olympiad. Sinasabi nga AFGM in previous BOGMs, with the exception of GM Wesley eh kaya nyang sumabay with the rest of Pinoy GMs.

For the year 2015, we look forward yet again to another VINTAGE Torre performance in the annual BOGM / NCC.

Thank you again to AFGM Eugene Torre for always being there, a living sports legend and a TRUE gentleman.

Ang pagkatanda ko huling kitakits na yata yung surprise bubuli55 dinner. We wish you well, together with your colleagues in the ETCF and Fiancheto Realty !

Dec-21-14  pinoymaster77: Posted this in FB Groups Ahedres :

For the year 2014, after a tumultous start highlighted by GM Wes' planned transfer, and the apparent 'Young GMs revolt' affecting the Tromso Olympiad formation, NCFP got some breaks this Q4 :

- Chess being named as NEW priority sport by NCFP

- Sudden staging here of the Asian Juniors, and Mikee Suede beign the first Pinay Asian Juniors champ, earning an outright WIM title and a WGM norm.

- Aside from annual PSC/ POC support, eh got corporate sponsors and successfully just staged the 2 back-to-back intl events. And as far as I know, the cash prizes were given during the awarding, pati sa Pinoys.

Earlier in the year, PHI got more medals in the ASEAN Chess event, still 2nd to Vietnam, but Pau Bersamina, Jodilyn Fronda got their IM/WIM titles and a GM / WGM norm. For Janelle Frayna, she actually earlier earned the 3 WIM norms before the ASEAN in Macau, what she gained effectively was the WGM norm.

Looking forward that in 2015 that NCFP build on these. Aside from the usual events for age group / grassroots, overseeing the Non-Masters events eh have focussed / MODERN chess support (Professional training, campaign in Europe) for our top young GMs Ino and JP''s further development and the GM/WGM campaigns of Pau Hari Jodilyn Janelle Mikee and other young hopefuls.

Dec-27-14  metrolirot: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all BW-GETS! Just like to share to you my personal insight and best game in the recently concluded 1st Manny Pacquiao Cup Active chess tourney.Just click the link http://metrolirot.blogspot.com/2014...
Dec-27-14  epistle: Nice game! However, how would you have proceeded with your "attack" if after 10...f4, 11.exf4 exf4, 12. Nxf4? I think white is better here.
Dec-27-14  metrolirot: If 11.exf4, black would not reply 11.. exf4 but 11..Qh5! with a better version of the Grand Prix Attack.
Dec-27-14  epistle: If 11...Qh5 it's simply 12. Ne4 Ng4, 13.h4. If 12...Bh3 13.Nxf6+ Rxf6 14.Be3. Black is simply a pawn down with no attack.
Dec-27-14  epistle: I mean 14.fxe5 dxe5 15.b4
Dec-27-14  epistle: 11.exf4 Qh5
12. Ne4 Bh3
13. Nxf6+ Rxf6
14. fxe5 Rxf2
15. Rxf2 Rf8
16. Bf4 dxe5
17. Bxc6 Bg4
18. Bd5+ Kh8
19.Kf1 exf4
20. d4
Dec-27-14  bubuli55: Thanks for the write up, sir metrolirot. Enjoyed it. Congratz on that game. Happy Holidays to you and your love ones.
Dec-27-14  metrolirot: @epistle: After 11.exf4 Qh5 12.Ne4 Bg4! wins a piece. Had a lucky win with White over IM Spas Kozhuharov of Bulgaria in a blitz game at Chessdom Chess Arena (time limit was 3 min + 1 sec. increment) when he ran smack into this line. I annotated that game in my chessblog http://metrolirot.blogspot.com/2013...
Dec-27-14  metrolirot: @bubuli55: Thanks then bubz and Happy holidays din sa yo at sa iyong pamilya. Hopefully magkita-kitz tayo sa personal one of these days..
Dec-27-14  Pulo y Gata: <metrolirot> Beautiful finish to a nice game!

I also play that line with black but I haven't thought of it as reversed grand prix. Good work on that one, somehow knowing that it's a "grand prix" makes the pattern of attack recognizable.

6/9 is not bad, congratulations!

Dec-27-14  metrolirot: Thanks bro. Hopefully kita-kita uli tayo sa grupo next year. Happy new year to you and your family!
Dec-27-14  epistle: <metrolirot: @epistle: After 11.exf4 Qh5 12.Ne4 Bg4! wins a piece. Indeed! But it seems there's a slight difference. What about 12.b4? This was not possible in the Kozhuharov game. So 13. Ne4 can be played next and if ...Bg4 white has Rb2.

Dec-27-14  SugarDom: <metrolirot>, why the game data say Kuzhuharov is playing white and also in the chess playing app?
