EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Dec-31-14  Nf3em: Happy New Year Idol El Eugenio and all BW-GETS ;-)

Ano ba meron?

Dec-31-14  Nf3em: <<metrolirot>: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all BW-GETS! Just like to share to you my personal insight and best game in the recently concluded 1st Manny Pacquiao Cup Active chess tourney.Just click the link http://metrolirot.blogspot.com/2014...

Nice game! It is also one of my favorite line against the English Opening. In the last round of JCA 2011 Summer Open in Tokyo (Japan), I employed it as I need a win and did -- I ended-up in a triple tie but declared Group B Champion due to higher tie-break points.

Although my game isn't akin to Reversed GPA, I still remember it as one of my best game.

;-)

Dec-31-14  spawn2: Happy New Year to All!

Wishing everyone the best in 2015.

Dec-31-14  Pulo y Gata: Feliz año nuevo!
Dec-31-14  wordfunph: Happy New Year!
Dec-31-14  bubuli55: Happy New Year 2015!
Dec-31-14  pinoymaster77: Happy New Year to GETS / ETCF !

Though there were some acts in chess events and by chess officials which were shared and I find despicable, ang pampalubag loob eh yung mga bata.

UE's Leeroi Palma of Siniloan Laguna was champ of that Dec 30 event at Alphaland, may story din etong boy na eto. And got a NY greeting from Jasper and wished him well in the UAAP and his studies.

With the Jan list, Phils still at 41st with average rating of its top 10 players at 2496.

Our TOP 10 still unchanged, wala pa yung results ng 2 intl events dito na PICC and PSC/Puregold, pero roughly GMs Ino and Oli, lost points, while GM JP should rise to #3 and Joey going to #4. Sila GMs Joey and Dar halos par for the course sa 2 events. Kasama pa sa TOP 10 sila GMs Banjo and Bong who rarely play in tournaments, which indicates walang sumisirit pataas na bata for the TOP 10

Jan-01-15  spawn2: No Olympiad this year and chess is not part of the SEA Games in Singapore which means GM Eugene will be representing the country in individual tournaments.
Jan-01-15  pinoymaster77: There's the New Delhi Open later this month, and in March the Zonals and HD Bank Open in Vietnam. Just my thoughts for New Delhi as minimum eh send GM Gomez and GM norm campaigner IM Pascua.

Usually it takes some time at this time of the year for NCFP to post its calendar for the New Year, baka budget deliberations pa ?

Jan-01-15  pinoymaster77: Im re-posting here what I recapped in GM Panjol's page after the 2 intl events :

To RECAP the 2 tournaments :
PICC PSC / Puregold
GM Gomez 2510 + 11.1 + 11.1
GM Laylo 2500 + 6.5 - 1.6

GM Antonio 2503 + 5.1 - 4.2

GM Torre 2448 + 0.3 DNP

GM Bitoon 2413 + 6.9 + 0.7

GM Sadorra 2575 - 18.9 + 1.1

GM Barbosa 2533 - 8.8 - 14.3

Which means impact to the TOP players by FIDE Feb list would be :

1. GM Sadorra 2575 - 17 = 2558

2. GM Gomez 2510 + 22 = 2532

3. GM Barbosa 2533 - 23 = 2510

4. GM Antonio 2503 + 1 = 2504

5. GM Sanchez 2501 DNP

6. GM Laylo 2494 + 5 = 2499

7. GM Paragua 2492 DNP (US Based)

8. GM Barcenilla 2455 DNP

9. GM Villamayor 2454 DNP

10. GM Salvador 2450 DNP

11. GM Torre 2448 + 1 = 2449

DNP means didn't play in the 2 intl events here, but GM Bong played in the Penang Open in early Dec and emerged as Champ.

Most of our GMs are not in the peak of their ELOs which is quite alarming, in the absence of any other universal measure, ELO is our gauge.

NCFP may have done something in Q4, for the full comprehensive program, frankly its still found wanting. No announcement or signs of a reinvigorated program

Jan-01-15  pinoymaster77: BTW, kung tama nasa FB alert, happy bertdey to Iskubadayb! Sana sumilip ka na dito soon, pang bagong taon ka pala!
Jan-02-15  kamagong24: http://kalayaancentre.ca/files/imag...
Jan-02-15  pinoymaster77: If only HALF of the TOP TEN are > 2500 which is minimum ELO for earning the GM title, and given the supposed 'ratings inflation' , meaning current 2500 player is probably a 2400 player during AFGM's prime time, eh our current (half of them) GMs eh hard up to get over the 2500 hump.

Exception dyan AFGM since come Olympiad time eh his competitive juices flow again.

BUT isaalang alang din natin AFGM, ibig ba sabihin even beyond the 2016 Olympiad eh asahan pa sya maglaro, mga 66 yrs old na yata sya by the 2018 Olympiad.

Mga over 6 months na yung Tromso episode / exodus of young GMs, wala na excuse ang NCFP, they need to execute na a comprehensive program for our willing GMs and more youth players to become GMs and REMAIN competitive. Sa ngayon, kanya kanyang training pa din eh

Jan-02-15  kardopov: Good planner is what NCFP needs. Why not ask sugardom to fill the task?
Jan-03-15  torrefan: why not just buy? A lot are now being sold at bookstores.
Jan-04-15  kamagong24: Happy New Year GM Torre!
Jan-04-15  pinoymaster77: Well, if he has the time, sugardom can be easily endorsed sa NCFP Director, for starters. Kaya lang next year na din yata NCFP elections, better to be off to a fresh start.
Jan-04-15  geniokov: <PM77> Wala tayong magawa bro.budget ang problema aside from Elo inflation.Money is always at the end the main cause of it.Kita naman ni Tolentino yan eh!Nasaan na yang mga nasa Fide nakaupo? They only saving their own ass.
Jan-04-15  torrefan: Joining the NCFP is a thankless undertaking.

First, you will lose your money there.

Second, they will say you are corrupt. Money you spend for chess from your own pocket they will say was not yours anyway but fruits of corruption.

Third, they will easily forget the good that you've done and will only remember whatever wrong it is which happened while you were there.

Fourth, you will be mercilessly pilloried here and other social media sites.

Jan-04-15  pinoymaster77: Up to sugardom to discern and decide if will push thru. But starting at Director level is 'safer'

Mga takaw pansin yung Presidente and Technical Director

Jan-04-15  pinoymaster77: Now, when news broke out on GM Wes' decision to turn fulltime pro and leave Webster scholarship and Susan/Paul, a glimmer of hope rekindled in my heart on a 'possible comeback' since a major obstacle is out of the way.

But then again, eonomics/income-wise being with USCF may not be pre-requisite to play in the Sinquefield Cup (since they base invitiations on HIGH ELO, like those in 2800s level), but in the case of the US Open I guess its exclusive to USCF members. So I figured around 2016 due to mainly PRO considerations, being with USCF would be best suited.

But then maybe come 2018 onwards, there's brighter possibilities. It just gained headwinds today when Nil posted in FB Groups what he heard from Pres Pichay during the Phil Cup awarding, and Joey Villar aired the same hope in his Philstar article today.

BUT, NCFP cannot totally depend on that. In the cases of GMs Ino and JP, it can be seen they cannot thrive on the 'SELF STUDY' mode, they would need HELP to get to 2600+ level. Like help from foreign, proven Trainers and extensive intl tourneys exposure.

Jan-04-15  Iskubadayb: Kumusta po sa GETS lalo na kay bradidik. Silip lang. Kwentuhan tayo soon. :)
