EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Mar-11-15  pinoymaster77: The formal, red carpet announcement of the fight proceeded this dawn/PHI time with so many media outlets agog : - Manny mentioned in ABS' interview that he was surprised na 'bumait' si Floyd.

- The goal daw for PPV is to generate $ 300 to 400M, mga over 3M hits yata dapat yun, di ko lang alam hatian dun. Dun sa prize purse na $ 200M eh 60% (120M) kay Floyd and 40% (80M) kay Manny, and thats before taxes. At any rate, this is Manny's biggest paycheck, and may rematch clause pa. Maambunan din malamang chess later on.

- Floyd has 2 Pinoys in his staff / employ (per Dyan Castillejo's interview)

- Both fighters training their hardest, and expected to be in the BEST shapes in their careers come fight time!

- Super mahal ang live tickets ha, ranging from $ 1500 to $ 7500, kaya pati si Liam Neeson eh sa interview eh message kay Manny eh '2 tickets buddy'...

Mar-11-15  Pulo y Gata: I thought it was specifically mentioned before that there's no rematch clause in this contract, that this is only one fight. Pacquiao said that this is because, if he wins, he will be the one dictating the terms if Money wants a rematch.
Mar-11-15  spawn2: <Pulo y Gata>

It could be part of the grand plan to say that there is no rematch clause to put some "sense of urgency" for the fans to really go out of their way to watch either live or via pay per view to increase total revenue.

Me thinks, the only thing that will hamper a possible rematch is if one of them earns a lopsided victory.

Regarding Zonals 3.3, I expect GM Eugene to get full point. Excited to see what opening he will use as White. He already employed the London and the Alapin.

Mar-11-15  spawn2: <spawn2>

Am waiting for Skycable to announce its ppv rates for the Money - Pacman fight, before Pacquiao fights were pegged at P999. I expect it to be higher this time.

How much do you think it would be, am guessing it will be between P 1,500 - P 2,000.

Mar-11-15  pinoymaster77: Just roughly, ang rematch clause yata eh if Floyd loses, well since he was more of dictating terms, para 'insurance' din siguro para sa kanya.

Hoping Manny's camp employ's a professional accountant this time and settle all open tax concerns. Maybe have a photo ops in handing over the big check to the BIR Commish within the year?

No need to sell the Forbes property and am not sure kung nabenta na property sa Brentville Binan, as his kids ang alam ko committed and advanced na paid na sa Brent Mamplasan.

Sana Manny's friends don't ask na for 'free' tickets eh kung USD 15k for 2 tickets eh napakalaki. Kaya naman nilang magbayad. Saka hope the hangers on / entourage don't pepper him with expenses and doleouts.

Nakita daw wifey sa CNN that Manny handed out $100 bills to the kids in the US, a few days later daw the kids returned, and kasama pa parent mainly Moms ahehe

Mar-11-15  pinoymaster77: Pero ubosh tawi tayo dito, dun sa isang article. Manny should just stick to boxing / sports?

Mar-11-15  Pulo y Gata: That talk about Pacquaio losing wealth and hence needing to sell his properties is just that IMO-talk, malicious at that. The man has visibly changed since his spiritual conversion and could be doing things with other motivations. The other day, it was in the news that he's buying JLo's property in Holywood, priced at more or less half a billion pesos.

Also, no rematch clause means no rematch clause. Meaning, they will negotiate again if they want to fight after this one (compared to a rematch clause when the losing side can demand a rematch based on the terms of the clause). My guess is that Money will not fight Pacman again if he wins this. He's no longer obligated then. Unless, maybe, Pacman will sign to a 80-20 contract? Hehehe!

Mar-11-15  spawn2: Black uli GM Eugene, employing one of his reliable defense against d4 which is the Old Indian Def

Mar-12-15  pinoymaster77: Just replayed it, grabe naman yung FM Dang reckless mga moves and mukhang di nya kilala AFGM, bata siguro eto. Ayun he has given severe spanking / chess lessons, makapag rest AFGM!

Early draw na GMs JP and Dar.

Mar-12-15  pinoymaster77: Mas maganda pala manalo si Manny, para possible 3-fight series. Boxing / fight game yan, its also business
Mar-12-15  spawn2: Will submit all the games of GM Eugene in this Zonal so that it can be part of chessgames collection.
Mar-12-15  Pulo y Gata: I already requested a page for this Zonal. If you want to do the same, click my handle and drop cg forum a message.
Mar-12-15  pinoymaster77: Initial looksee lang sa trend, though may 3 rounds pa and karamihan will play in HD Bank Open next week :

Going over GMs, eh since ELO pa din basis kaya #41 ang PHI with average rating of 2494 of its top 10 players, eh mukhang majority pa not playing up to strength eh mababa na nga mga ELOs. GM Ino will probably stay as #1 but will go below 2540. GM Joey will crash out of 2500 level. IM Hari creeping up to #11.

We really need more fresh young Masters to come up, to join IMs Hari Pau and Jem, but if indicator eh yung recent Asian Youth dito, the likes of Daryl, JM and Istraelity are not ASEAN challenger level yet to their peers or current Masters.

Thats what we got and need to chug along, I hope kung ma release na nga PSC to NCFP the annual budget, eh a part would be allocated to 'BREAK THROUGH', not just status quo.

Mar-12-15  Pulo y Gata: CG replied that they are already working on extracting the pgns for the zonal event in Vietnam. The page should be up soon.
Mar-12-15  spawn2: GM Eugene vs IM Haridas is a Trompovsky with early exchange of queens.
Mar-13-15  spawn2: GM Eugene has a very big advantage vs IM Haridas in a queenless middlegame. At first glance, it looks drawish but actually the position required demanded for topnotch planning.
Mar-13-15  spawn2: Congrats GM Eugene for a fine win vs IM Haridas Pascua. Last two rounds then HD Bank!
Mar-13-15  pinoymaster77: For penultime round bukas :

GM Le vs GM Dar sa top board

GM Ngoc vs GM Zhang

Nagkatapat pa GM Oli and Rich

FM Le Tuan Minh 2393 vs AFGM. dating Age Grouper eto, mga 2 to 3 years ahead yata kay Pau

Another Viet opponent untitled Vo Thanh Ninh 2311 for IM Pau

All the best to the Pinoy delegation!

Mar-13-15  spawn2: Rd 8 will be the crucial round for our top pinoy GMs.

GMs Torre, Laylo, Barbosa and Bitoon can still qualify for the WCC.

Fight!

Mar-13-15  pinoymaster77: Mas madaming wins for Pinoys in rd7 kaya mas madaming GMs wheeled back in contention, provided they have STRONG finishing kick in their last 2 games. Nag improve din slightly mga ELO loss and puede pa further maibsan sa last 2 games nila. All the best to our Pinoy delegation !
