EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Mar-13-15  metrolirot: All the best of luck for the RP delegation in the last 2 rounds of the Zonals. Kaya pa yan!
Mar-13-15  pinoymaster77: Napansin ko lang sa Zonals field :

- Walang reps and Indonesia and Malaysia, while Mongolia sent 1 each, their top guns. Better off pa din PHI which has 13 players, 2nd to host Vietnam's 38 players in the field of 64!

- More youth players fielded even in the level of the Zonals. Well, we may expect the Viets as host country to field their all, but Spore's Tin Jingyao is fielded and actually doing well, may nabiktima din. Sa PHI, yung mga sumusunod na age groups after Pau I hope eh maka level up.

Mar-14-15  allan.dinglasan: 0-1 mabuhay Eugene!
Mar-14-15  spawn2: GM Eugene,

Pinasaya mo na naman kami. Maraming salamat!

Mar-14-15  spawn2: For thE last round here are the pairings:

GM Oliver Barbosa vs GM Le Quang Liem
GM Eugene Torre vs GM NT Son
GM Dao Thien Hai vs GM Zhang Zhong

GM Le Quang Liem is assured of one of the two qualifying tickets for the WCC.

The other 5 will be gunning for the 2nd ticket With GM NT Son having the inside track with 6 pts. GMs, Zhang Torre, Barbosa and Dao have 5.5 pts.

Yesterday, I was praying that if GM Eugene wins his game today, his last game should be against GM NT Ngoc to give him the opportunity to have some sort of control over his destiny.

GM NT Son is a difficult opponent but as the saying goes "When the going gets tough, the Tough gets going".

Wishing you the best GM Torre!

Mar-14-15  pinoymaster77: Ni-replay ko nga game as hanggang middle game lang na monitor kanina. Nakuha nga sa tiyaga at timing/manuevering, may stage na namasyal king ni AFGM sa queenside then back to kingside, nahilo din Tuan Minh.

Now, the destiny is in AFGM's hands na nga...

GO AFGM and Philippine delegation!

Mar-14-15  epistle: Gud luck to ET!
Mar-14-15  kamagong24: yes! GM Torre my chess hero!!!
Mar-14-15  spawn2: Needing a win today, GM Torre pushing his pawn to e4. GM Ngoc NT wielding his pet def The French.

Good luck GM Eugene.

Mar-14-15  Pulo y Gata: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. f4 c5 6. Nf3 Nc6 7. Be3 Be7 8. Qd2 O-O 9. dxc5 Bxc5 10. O-O-O Qb6 11. Nd4 Nxd4 12. Bxd4 Bxd4 13. Qxd4 Qxd4 14. Rxd4 a6 *

Tough nut to crack.

Mar-14-15  spawn2: It is going to be an endgame fight with the Queens leaving the board by move 13.
Mar-15-15  kramrich: Spawn2 san ka nakakapanood? Thanks
Mar-15-15  wordfunph: bro kramrich, chessbomb.com
Mar-15-15  kramrich: Thanks wordfunph
Mar-15-15  spawn2: <kramrich> sorry for late reply.

GM Eugene it was a nice effort although natalo. On to the HD Cup.

When GM Dao lost to GM Zhang, it automatically removes GM Torre in the hunt because of the TB2 which is winner over the other rule.

GM Le and GM Ngoc TS qualify to WCC

Mar-15-15  gokusano: Blunder yung 43. g4 pero wala na rin palang bearing.
Mar-15-15  pinoymaster77: Good fighting chess, its still +ELO gain and its been years in recent memory that AFGM was in contention til the end when I recall the ASEAN events participated in.

Thats why given the Phil chess environment and the ascent of young players continues to be slow, I still think AFGM still got 1 or 2 Olympiads to play for.

Yup. most of them will soldier on to compete in the HD Bank Open set to start in a few days. Uuwi na GM Zhang pero sasali sila GMs Li Chao and Rakhmanov.

Mar-15-15  pinoymaster77: Based on the player overview of PHI players, actually medyo nakabawi, it was looking worse with 2 or 3 rounds to go. But top 10 overall average would still go down from 2494 as GMs Ino and Joey shed 20+ ELO pts, gmjoey goes well below 2500 while GMs Oli and Dar barely at 2500+ to join GMs Ino and JP as 2500 players.

Sana nga naka warm-up and may better performance in the HD Bank Open

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr163...

Mar-15-15  dunkenchess: Nice games.
Mar-16-15  pinoymaster77: A 1 day rest, then a new battle starts tomorrow in the HD Bank Open, 1st opponent handling black si AFGM vs WIM Le 2138.

Mar-18-15  spawn2: GM Eugene winning in rd 2 and currently locked in battle against a Vietnamese WIM.
Mar-18-15  pinoymaster77: Medyo for this event, AFGM taking time to heat up, next this pm eh vs youthful but dangerous FM Tin Jingyao of Spore.
Mar-18-15  pinoymaster77: I wanted to validate my recollection that FM Tin has been having success vs GMs lately, checked that in the last 3.3 Zonals he went up against 8 GMs with a win over GM JP, loss to GM Dao and 6 draws, he got +37 and inching towards 2400 level.

Well, PGNs are available agad for the games in the Zonals and HD Bank, so the latest tiradingdings can be checked out...

Can safely say both FMs Tin and Anh Khoi would get their IM titles eventually in next few years, or could even be this year. They have their countries' full support.
