EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Apr-09-15  pinoymaster77: Good pm,

Na share ko din k spawn2 per going over of the Bangkok Open field in chess-results.com eh noted 32 Pinoys listed, kasama AFGM. Wala namang news na di tutuloy so baka nga maglaro. Si IM Hari lang eh naglalaro na sa Dubai and R.Dungca just went to the US.

Per events check eh Bangkok Open overall sked April 12 to 19, so maybe this Sun eh round 1 or registration.

Apr-09-15  pinoymaster77: Nga pala, may I ask spawn2 kung nakalaro nga ba AFGM sa Bangkok Open 2014? Kasi suki dito si GM Nigel, pero I don't recall nagkatapat ba sila last year? Rated 2678 pa Nigel and may recent match pa kay Gary. Ewan kung may binabalikan si Nigel sa Pattaya ahehe.

Anyway, kung makalaro nga AFGM sa 2015 edition, eh that would be one for monitoring sa pairings, kung magkalaban sila ulit

Apr-09-15  Nf3em: Pag nasa Bangkok na ako hahanap ako ng mapapaglaruan ng OTB.
Apr-09-15  pinoymaster77: Madami na Pinoys na into chess teaching dun sa Thailand Nf3em. Yung isang chess academy owned by Mr. Calacday and he has tapped a lot of Pinoys.
Apr-09-15  spawn2: good morning bro <Danny> and <pm77>

GM Torre did play in the 2014 edition of the Bangkok Open and will play in the 2015th edition. Tough field with GMs Wang Hao Nigel Short playing including the 2014 Champ GM Paco Vallejo.

Once again, goodluck to our pinoy players. Looking forward to GM Torre breaching 2500 again before the year ends.

Apr-09-15  Nf3em: aha may academy pwede ako magaral dun hehe ;-)
Apr-09-15  Pulo y Gata: So many pinoy chess coaches in thailand. Others use it as jumping board to US and other countries.

You will have many sparring partners there, Nf3em.

Apr-10-15  Nf3em: Ay ayaw ko makipaglaro sa mga master caliber, dun lang ako bagay sa mga estudyante nila hehehe
Apr-10-15  pinoymaster77: Yup, kapunta lang Conrado Diaz to US, sa FB chat eh parang immigrant sya, may relatives yata. Sa mga FB posts nya, nangongolekta ng mga premyo sa US circuit kada weekend, and nabibili na nya mga tipong chess gear like DGT clock.

Kapupunta lang dun Ryan Dungca, not sure kung tourist.

Yung mga nagpunta US galing Pinas nagsibalik na like GMs Barbosa and Laylo, Panops and FM bbking Nouri. Si Dari andun pa, going thru the tournaments circuit in the East Coast

Apr-10-15  Pulo y Gata: I've heard about Diaz. I guess it's easier to go to US through other Asian countries?
Apr-10-15  pinoymaster77: Baka nga ganun, specially yata kung thru Singapore (which is like the Switzerland of ASEAN).

Satin kasi yung US Embassy dito ang tops in terms of visa applications per day, top revenue earner. Parang may 'quota' din for rejections, pero heard lately may relaxation in granting visas for some cases.

Apr-12-15  joeyj: 15th Bangkok Chess Club Open 2015

LIVE

http://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2015...

Apr-12-15  spawn2: Thanks <joeyj>. Unfortunately, the games at chessbomb are not in progress. They normally experienced problems during the 1st round.

Went to the official site and saw that the top 6 games are featured at chess24. Four of the 6 boards were already finished with the higher rated players beating their opponents.

Board 6 could be an upset based on the silicon monster's assessment.

Apr-12-15  joeyj: GM Torre Eugenio 2460 0 1 - 0 0 Sollid Stein 2050

http://www.chess-results.com/tnr169...

Apr-12-15  spawn2: GM Torre with black is now playing Rajdeep Sarkar of India toting 2201 rating.

Should be another good result for AFGM.

Apr-13-15  spawn2: GM Torre drawing his 2nd rd game but IM Bersamina won which will match him with GM Vallejo Pons in Rd 3.
Apr-13-15  Pulo y Gata: That a good assignment. He will get used to beating strong GMs.
Apr-13-15  torrefan: Pau will beat Pons.
Apr-13-15  spawn2: GM Torre won his game and will have 2.5 pts going to the 4th rd. Unfortunately, IM Pau capitulated to GM Vallejo Pons. In rd 4,GM Barbosa will play against GM Nigel Short while GM Torre will have another white vs FM Jack Puccini.
Apr-14-15  spawn2: GM Barbosa winning against GM Short. Still waiting for the result of the other games.
Apr-14-15  pinoymaster77: Ayush ah, GM Oli will remain co-leader then with 4/4, as much as 6 players puede pa sa grupong yun
Apr-14-15  spawn2: GM Torre won puttinf him at 14th place with 3.5 pts. He will go up against India's Ritviz Parab toting an elo of 2188. If he wins, we should see his 6th rd game in chessbomb.

Unfortunately, unlike in the two (2) events in Vietnam, pgns of the games have not been posted yet.

Other pinoys doing good are:

GM Barbosa 4 pts
GM Laylo 3.5 pts
IM Dimakiling 3.5 pts
WIM Frayna 3 pts
IM Bersamina 3 pts

Apr-14-15  spawn2: GM Barbosa vs GM Wang Hao in rd 5.

The schedule of rds in the Bangkok Open 2015 is a little friendly to GM Torre with only rds 2 and 3 happening on the same day. It gives GM Torre time to rest and prepare.

It is possible that rds 6 and 7 will be on the same day but it will be back to one rd/day for the last two rounds.

Apr-15-15  pinoymaster77: Magaganda puntos mga Pinoys after 5 rounds tho karamihan galing sa baba vs lower rated opponents, eh pangpuntos yun but not for good TPR. IM Dimaks has 4.5 while IM Paulo, GM Oli, AFGM, GM Dar have 4pts.

Mya sa rd6, babangga IM Dimaks vs GM Socko 2628 and IM Pau vs GM Rasmussen 2507, nasa top 6 boards sila and makasama sa chessbomb mamaya.

As spawn2 pointed out, abot na sa 2400 live rating si Pau which is highest so far, now onto 2450 as next milestone

Apr-16-15  spawn2: GM Eugene won his 5th rd game against Ravi Teja of India (2405) with the black pieces. He is now sharing pole position with 11 others.

His game against GM Ganguly (2619) should be one of the featured games tomorrow in chessbomb.

Goodluck AFGM!
