EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Apr-17-15  spawn2: GM Torre made time control. Both are given extra 30 mins thinking time. If GM Genius finds Nc1, engine eval goes 1.22
Apr-17-15  spawn2: Torre vs Ganguly is a draw..Good game
GM Eugene.
Apr-17-15  pinoymaster77: Sa Bangkok Open round 7 eh draws sila AFGM Torre and IM Paulo.

Sa Gashimov Memorial eh lamang former WC Anand over current WC Carlsen! Ma-convert kaya, o sana? GM Wes may slight advantage over GM Giri

Apr-17-15  pinoymaster77: Round 8 / penultimate round bakbakans !

7 13 GM Barbosa Oliver 2489 5 5½ GM Torre Eugenio 2460 18

Apr-17-15  pinoymaster77: Malaki na pala lamang GM Wes k GM Giri, sana ma convert na for first ever win vs 1 of main nemesis...
Apr-17-15  allan.dinglasan: Nalo ako sa chessbookie, my first win, draw between torre and Ganguly
Apr-17-15  pinoymaster77: AFGM vs GM Oli naman, he's handled before, all the best
Apr-17-15  pinoymaster77: Picked up some good points from GM Daniel King's analyses - on the WCs Anand vs Carlsen game, Magnus didn't go for the Berlin but the Marshall Gambit. Some winning lines for Ex-WC Anand (Nb4 instead of the safer Ne3) but opted to play safe. Wes he seeing ghost as per GM Delchev concurring in the chessbomb commentary?

Akala ko in monitoring the middle game part sa chessbomb eh makabawi si Ex-WC Vishy, but Magnus 'escaped'

So vs Giri followed a Korchnoi-Timman game for the early moves

Apr-19-15  pinoymaster77: Ah sa Bangkok Open eh nagka tigpasan pala sa last round eh, nalo Indian GM Ganguly kay GM Wang Hao, masaklap yun for Wang Indian winning over Chinese. Tapos Polish GM Dragun won over GM Vallejo Pons, dragon talaga! Tapos Indian IM's Diptayan's GM norm hunt mukhang stymied by eventual champ GM Nigel, nagising yata sa earlier pagkatalo k GM Oli. Now eh 6.5 pts finish ni IM Diptayan eh baka nabitin pa, kung naka 7pts baka may chance...

Sila GMs Oli and JP nasa grupo ng 6.5 pointers, 8th si Oli and 13th si JP after tiebreak, sa grupo ng 6 pointers, 20th si AFGM and 22nd si IM Pau. Pati GM Jay nakahabol sa 6pts (30th)

Apr-20-15  spawn2: Still a solid performance by GM Torre with 4 wins 4 draws and a loss.

Shed 1 pt sa present elo but no big deal. Next stop will be BOGM or Asian Individuals.

IM Pau made good progress. He will finally breach 2400 come May rating list.

Apr-20-15  pinoymaster77: Checked the BOGM, sa Aug pa Finals. The Semis eh in May and IM Pau may need to play in it.

Based lang sa latest tournaments, mukhang sila GM Oli and IM Hari ang may uptick in their games (compared to previous outings) and have to see if they can maintain it

BOGM edition this year is not for Olympiad team, yung BOGM 2016 next year siguro ang for next Olympiad team

Apr-22-15  pinoymaster77: Looked up the April FIDE ratings as this reflected the 2 tournaments in Vietnam around March. A bit SHOCKING to see even LOWER ELOs from our GMs. For the May rating, maybe we'll get to see a few ELO rise for some of our GMs and for IM Hari, while IM Pau may be breaching 2400 :

1 Gomez, John Paul g PHI 2520 18 1986
2 Sanchez, Joseph g PHI 2505 9 1970
3 Paragua, Mark g PHI 2501 0 1984
4 Sadorra, Julio Catalino g PHI 2500 18 1986
5 Laylo, Darwin g PHI 2496 18 1980
6 Barbosa, Oliver g PHI 2489 18 1986
7 Antonio, Rogelio Jr g PHI 2483 9 1962
8 Torre, Eugenio g PHI 2460 18 1951
9 Barcenilla, Rogelio g PHI 2455 0 1972
10 Pascua, Haridas m PHI 2454 18 1993
10 Villamayor, Buenaventura g PHI 2454 0 1967
12 Salvador, Roland g PHI 2433 5 1982
13 Dableo, Ronald m PHI 2419 0 1979
14 Bitoon, Richard g PHI 2417 18 1975
14 Dimakiling, Oliver m PHI 2417 9 1980
16 Nolte, Rolando m PHI 2400 18 1972

Apr-22-15  pinoymaster77: From that list of the 'TOP 16' with ELO > 2400, GM Villamayor is mainly inactive and into chess coaching in Spore, I dont know whats status of GM Banjo after not showing up in the Olympiad, IM Dableo is into UST coaching and overseas stints mainly for chess team / rapid events.

GM Mark is in the US and nagpaalam na sa NCFP, and another GM reportedly migrating to US with family.

The only youngsters are IM Hari, and IMs Paulo and Jem knocking on the 2400 level.

The prospective youngsters like NM Jacutina and Rilloraza of FEU eh di pa hinog as per their Asian Jrs results in Tagaytay recently.

But meantime the NCFP continues to 'invest' in the chess youth, like the FIDE World Schools in Thailand starting May 6, and the back-to-back Asian schools and ASEAN Age Group in Spore.

Apr-23-15  wordfunph: <spawn2> deserves this one..

http://www.ebay.ph/itm/RP-Chess-Mag...

Apr-26-15  Nf3em: Good Monday morning AFGM and bros <Alex>, <Ed>, <PM77>, et al.

;-)

Apr-28-15  pinoymaster77: Good am Nf3em,

Lets lookout for AFGM's next event

May-02-15  spawn2: Good evening guys, GM Torre received an invite to play in a closed tournament this month. Still waiting for news if the tourney will push through.

After this comes the Asian Continental from Aug 1 to 13 which is a qualifier for the WCC. This should be in GM Torre's radar.

On August 20, he will defend his BOGM title.

May-03-15  pinoymaster77: TOP players still a barometer, for May GMs Paragua (Georgia event win) and GM Oli had some ELO rise.

IM Pau stays at > 2400 level. Many GMs in TOP 10 actually 'cannot' play for the natl team for various reasons like GMs Paragua, Sanchez,Barcenilla (if not yet made up with PSC/NCFP) and Villamayor.

This means will probably need AFGM's services in next year's Olympiad, will he be age 64 by then?

The CORE may still be the 2014 core, like GMs Gomez, Sadorra and Eugene, plus IM Pau if can secure another slot. GM Jay's health concerns may be a factor, and its up to GM Oli to prove that he's ready and willing next time for the 2016 Olympiad.

But the unseeded players have to earn their spot via the 2016 BOGM/NCC Finals (hope its earlier to allow some months of actual training together as a TEAM)

1 Gomez, John Paul g PHI 2512 9 1986
2 Paragua, Mark g PHI 2511 5 1984
3 Sanchez, Joseph g PHI 2504 8 1970
4 Barbosa, Oliver g PHI 2500 9 1986
4 Sadorra, Julio Catalino g PHI 2500 0 1986
6 Laylo, Darwin g PHI 2479 9 1980
7 Antonio, Rogelio Jr g PHI 2478 11 1962
8 Torre, Eugenio g PHI 2458 9 1951
9 Barcenilla, Rogelio g PHI 2455 0 1972
10 Villamayor, Buenaventura g PHI 2454 0 1967
11 Pascua, Haridas m PHI 2448 9 1993
12 Salvador, Roland g PHI 2436 5 1982
13 Dableo, Ronald m PHI 2419 0 1979
14 Bitoon, Richard g PHI 2417 0 1975
15 Dimakiling, Oliver m PHI 2409 9 1980
16 Bersamina, Paulo m PHI 2403 9 1998
17 Nolte, Rolando m PHI 2400 0 1972
18 Yap, Kim Steven m PHI 2399 0 1988

May-14-15  pinoymaster77: The bountiful harvest by our Phil delegation in the recently concluded FIDE World Schools Championships which per TD Jayson's post was 4 GOLDs, 5 silvers and a bronze in the standard and blitz events is indeed a breakthrough.

New FM in NM JM Jacutina and new WFM in Kylen Joy Mordido (sophomore HS). More prospects for IM / WIM. May NCFP/PSC continue to support for their next level of chess development, they represent the FUTURE.

Not as early as 2016 Olympiad year, but hopefully circa 2020, we can start to see more youngsters cracking the Olympiad teams
