EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Jun-14-15  pinoymaster77: Posting here as AFGM is Phil sports legend, and state of Philippine sports also impacts chess :

I really think POC / PSC went with what they can do, sending almost 500 athletes, granting overseas trainings (per short months lang tayo while 'rich' neighbors eh many months), psychologists, dieticians for willing sports/coaches.

Nag improve na din rivals and they exceeded their season's best, kaya nadale dun wushu's Parantac for his 2nd gold (just 0.01 difference!), high jump's Obiena and long jump's Torres. Some homecooking daw cost us in wushu and boxing.

Silver lining are NEW sports heroes / youngsters in billiard's 15 yr old Centeno, cycling's Salamat, gymnastics' Capellan, athletics' sprint queen in 17 yr old Kayla Richardson, shooting's Baldovino, the new young batch of boxers and taekwondo jins.

We also had head turners in tenni's Lehnert, swimming's Alkhadi, volleyball's Daquis and triathlon's Adorna.

In the team events. its sweet for the rugby 7's, Blu Boys/Girls and Sinag basketball, and lessons learned for Perlas, both volleyball teams, football team, water polo teams and netball.

This is the last hurrah / sporting event for the POC Pres Peping and PSC Chair Garcia tandem, they are sure to harp on the Natl Training Center again after this. Sporting fortunes would depend on who wins the Presidency sweepstakes next year. If its Binay, Peping stays on (maybe thru his 80s ?!), while if its PNoys annointed or ally, we'll have to be patient with steady sports budget increases, as the economy continues its so called growth meomentum. Same way with the NCFP elections, it will depend on who becomes Phil President

Jun-21-15  pinoymaster77: With WC Magnus' poor form in Norway Chess 2015, eh perennial Challenger former WC Anand pounced on him in round 4. Leader Topa reportedly had many breaaks in the event so far. Topa now #4 in liveratings while GM Anand is tied with GM Naka at 3rd/4th.

Uncharacteristic na WC Magnus has had 3 losses so far, to GMs Topalov, Caruana and Caruana !

Jul-01-15  pinoymaster77: For July ratings list, our TOP 10 still flat, and average ELO 2485. We'll have to patiently wait for our youth players to further LEVEL UP

Jul-02-15  pinoymaster77: "July 2015 ratings: Anand, Topalov, Nakamura
by Albert Silver

7/1/2015 – The talk can only be about those three players, in spite of Carlsen’s disastrous campaign in Norway, begging a comment. After sneaking past 2800, Nakamura stormed to 2814, a magnificent result, yet only good for world no.4! Incredibly, the 'old guard' shows they are not ready to retire as Anand comes at world no.2 with 2816, tied with Topalov, whose 2816 is a personal best at age 40!"

Jul-12-15  spawn2: GM Torre has been invited to play in the Guam International Open Tournament from July 17 to 22.

Jul-13-15  pinoymaster77: Hurrah, the baby PCTAP / Professional Chess Trainers Assoc of the Phils is born! Another good project from the ETCF. Here's the post in FB by PCTAP's 1st President Coach Rudy Ibanez :

"Thank you AFGM FST Eugene Torre! Chairman of the Professional Chess Trainers Association of the the Philippines. A big thanks too for entrusting me to be the 1st President of the association together with the others - IA DI Ilann Perez (VP-Luzon), IA FI NM IO Wilfredo Neri (VP-Visayas), IA NI IO James Infiesto (VP-Mindanao), Alex Marquez (Treasurer), NI Eliseo Tumbaga (Secretary), DI NA Florante Lopez (Deputy Secretary), DI NA Hermilo Samaniego (Executive Director). The other directors: IA NM FI Elias Lao Jr., Neal Garcia, DI NA Jesus Bitantes, DI CA Roberto Carandang, IA NM FI Erwin Carag and IA DI Edmon Prado (DepEd). We're looking forward for the other trainers to be with us on the next meeting so we can discuss plans for the development of chess training in the country. The meeting and setting up of officers coincides with the distribution of the FIDE Trainers Badges."

Jul-15-15  pinoymaster77: While looking out for the Guam Open 2015 entry in chess-results, have just read Bobby Ang's recent article om Ex-WC Vishy Anand :

http://chess-results.com/tnr180968....

Jul-20-15  joeyj: The risk is high in this tourney! They have to win ea game to earn +0.8 rating pts else -4.2 for a draw & -9.2 for a loss vs rated players. Not all players are rated.
Jul-20-15  spawn2: <joeyj>

You are right. GM Torre also mentioned that in the interview that the higher rated players are expected to top the tournament but there is always the possibility of being beaten if they are not careful.

GMs Torre and GM Laylo are to be commended for playing. They gave more importance to the chance given to them to help popularize the game in Guam rather than think of the possible harm in their elo ratings.

Jul-20-15  joeyj: 6.5/7 for Torre & Laylo
2 rds to go

Jul-20-15  spawn2: It's a nip and tuck affair between GM Torre and GM Laylo.

Crucial results in rd 8 plus opponents andresults in rd 9 will decide the champ of the Guam International Chess 2015.

Jul-21-15  kamagong24: good luck GM Torre!!!
Jul-21-15  gokusano: All the best GM Eugene!
Jul-21-15  joeyj: 7.5/8 for Torre & Laylo
1 rnd to go

http://chess-results.com/tnr180968....

Jul-22-15  spawn2: GM Torre winning the Guam International Open Chess 2015 via tibreaks against compatriot GM Laylo. Both finished the tournament with 8.5 points but GM Torre's opponents have a higher average rating combined compared to GM Laylo's opponents.

More than winning the title, what is laudable is that GM Torre continues to share his chess knowledge with the "mortals", giving the lower rated players the experience of facing a seasoned grandmaster. He did it with China in 1975 and he is still doing it 40 years after with Guam players.
