Dec-09-14  pinoymaster77: Let's SAVOR the glory moments while it lasted after that round 5 conquest over TOP SEED GM Popov. As we know, faltered vs GM Grigoryan last night, and will try to bounce back this pm in rd7 encounter vs Russian GM Demchenko

http://sports.inquirer.net/169632/g...

http://manilastandardtoday.com/2014...

Dec-09-14  Pulo y Gata: That was an efficient positional demolition of GM Popov in round 6.
Dec-10-14  pinoymaster77: Good assessment from PYG. These were the media reports this am as of after round 6 after GM JP's first loss, as round 7 ended last night and maybe not on time for media deadlines. GMJoey now highest scoring Pinoy with 5pts, with 6 of 7 as Pinoy opponents, he starts trying to repel the foreign invaders with rd8 encounter vs GM Demchenko this am :

Dec-10-14  pinoymaster77: 2 bishops vs 2 knights pala yung game ni GM Panjol vs GM Popov, mga games sa Qatar Masters pa lang promptly andito sa CG.com, matagalan pa etong sa PICC, so here are the moves, for fans' reference :

GOMEZ, John Paul (2510) - POPOV, Ivan (2622)
Philippine International Chess Championship, 09.12.2014 1.c4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bg4 5.h3 Bxf3 6.Qxf3 e6 7.Bd3 Bb4+ 8.Nc3 Nbd7 9.Bd2 O-O 10.a3 Ba5 11.O-O dxc4 12.Bxc4 e5 13.Rfd1 exd4 14.exd4 Nb6 15.Ba2 Nbd7 16.d5 c5 17.Bf4 Bxc3 18.Qxc3 Re8 19.d6 Re4 20.Be3 Qe8 21.Re1 Qf8 22.f3 Re5 23.Bf4 Rxe1+ 24.Rxe1 Re8 25.a4 b6 26.Bc4 h6 27.g4 Rxe1+ 28.Qxe1 Qa8 29.Kf2 Nd5 30.Bg3 N7f6 31.h4 Kf8 32.g5 hxg5 33.hxg5 1-0

Dec-10-14  Pulo y Gata: JP made it look easy.
Dec-13-14  pinoymaster77: Congratulation to GM Panjol for placing 5th in the just concluded PICC to lead the Pinoy contingent. Mukhang naging magandang warm-up yung sa Qatar Open.

Now clean up the table, may ibang putahe namang ihain starting tomorrow with the PSC Chairman / Puregold Cup. Reportedly, more plan to enlist in both the Open and Challengers sections, abangan ang rd1 pairings bukas

Dec-13-14  pinoymaster77: Ayon sa chess-results.com, eto recap for the Pinoy GMs :

GM Gomez 2510 + 11.1

GM Laylo 2500 + 6.5

GM Antonio 2503 + 5.1

GM Torre 2448 + 0.3

GM Bitoon 2413 + 6.9

GM Sadorra 2575 - 18.9

GM Barbosa 2533 - 8.8

Since FIDE ranking I think averages the ELO of the TOP 10 players, I don't think there will be significant ascent for PHI up the country rankings.

May they have better outing in the PSC Chairman / Puregold Cup

Dec-20-14  pinoymaster77: To RECAP the 2 tournaments :
PICC PSC / Puregold
GM Gomez 2510 + 11.1 + 11.1

GM Laylo 2500 + 6.5 - 1.6

GM Antonio 2503 + 5.1 - 4.2

GM Torre 2448 + 0.3 DNP

GM Bitoon 2413 + 6.9 + 0.7

GM Sadorra 2575 - 18.9 + 1.1

GM Barbosa 2533 - 8.8 - 14.3

Dec-22-14  pinoymaster77: Here's Bobby Ang's commentaries in Chess Piece on that GM Popov game in the PICC event :

Gomez, John Paul (2510) -- Popov, Ivan (2622) [D11]
Philippine International Chess Championship (5.2), 09.12.2014 1.c4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bg4 5.h3 Bxf3 6.Qxf3 e6 7.Bd3 Bb4+ 8.Nc3 Nbd7 9.Bd2 0 -- 0 10.a3 Ba5 11.0 -- 0

Visually impressive is 11.b4 Bc7 12.0 -- 0 but now Black has the counter-strike 12...dxc4 13.Bxc4 Ne5!? and the position goes to a tactical phase. GM John Paul makes the right decision and keeps building up his forces first.

11...dxc4N

Popov’s new move. He probably has been analyzing with the chess engine Komodo 8, as this is the only engine which suggests 11...dxc4 followed by 12...e5. The other engines all prefer the book move 11...Re8 and 12...Bc7. It appears that in this case Komodo 8, touted to be the strongest chess engine at present, is wrong. Black is not yet ready for the central push, as John Paul will demonstrate.

12.Bxc4 e5 13.Rfd1!

Preparing for d4 -- d5.

13...exd4 14.exd4

GM John Paul has an isolated d-pawn but the two bishops (especially the white-squared one) are fully equipped to take advantage of his space advantage. From here on till the end GM Popov does not make any obvious mistakes but is slowly and surely ground down. Vintage John Paul!

14...Nb6 15.Ba2 Nbd7 16.d5! c5

[16...cxd5 17.Nxd5 Nxd5 18.Bxd5 Bxd2 19.Rxd2 the pawn on b7 cannot be saved]

17.Bf4 Bxc3 18.Qxc3 Re8 19.d6 Re4 20.Be3 Qe8 21.Re1

[21.Bxc5? Rc8 is no good]

21...Qf8 22.f3 Re5 23.Bf4 Rxe1+ 24.Rxe1

With the idea of Re7

24...Re8 25.a4 b6 26.Bc4

The pressure is increasing. White will play g2 -- g4 -- g5 and, after the knight moves away, then Bb5 will win material.

26...h6 27.g4 Rxe1+ 28.Qxe1 Qa8 29.Kf2 Nd5 30.Bg3 N7f6 31.h4 Kf8 32.g5 hxg5 33.hxg5 1-0

After 33...Nd7 34.Qe4 wins very easily.

A positional masterpiece!

GM John Paul was the best-performing Filipino player in the tournament. Overall though our locals were just target-practice for the foreign GMs. Let’s hope they do better in the Puregold International, which is ongoing as we speak.

Jul-06-15  pinoymaster77: Nice bumping into GM Panjol sa Binan Mall nung Sat, kasama ang kanyang 3 yr old son. Briefly gave him overview on Laguna chess, di ko naitanong kung interesado sa chess ang son...
Jul-15-15  pinoymaster77: Its been awhile but JPs game in Gurgaon Open 2014 which won the brilliancy prize was just featured in Bobby Ang's column :

http://www.bworldonline.com/content...

Jul-15-15  Pulo y Gata: There's no mention of a "brilliancy prize". I think B. Ang just categorized the win as "brilliancy". Maybe GM Panjol can confirm?
Sep-30-15  pinoymaster77: Latest ratings. Learned na SAD state of Phil chess if 2 of our TOP GMs are now inactive or stopped their daily chess studies. Demoralization has crept in, and kelangan magamot agad else it would be a further downward spiral !

The government support for the federation is realistically small. The federation has to rally for the support of private firms for financial assistance to support their program. This is easier said than done. Aside from being a basketball-fanatic country, chess is a lonely sport and therefore lacks the glitter to attract sponsors. The primary person that can inject enthusiasm to this lonely sport is now a goner and has shifted federation last year.
Dec-19-15  pinoymaster77: Kahapon when it was raining cats and dogs with Onyok being relegated to LPA but inundated virtually the whole country, eh galling Malate eh dumaan via UN Ave going to Samplaloc. Nadaanan Robinson's Otis and it brought back memories of Sugar's previous birthday bash, that must be 3 to 4 years ago now.

Merong mini chess tournament among chess friends. Then live game between 2 young GMs JP and Wes, via laptop. Then a 'de suksok' chess board was being manned by Master B and sugar. Chess notebooks na notice mismo ni NCFP Prez Butch.

Both GMs have moved on, and many more events have passed. Gmlet has passed, while kabayan JP is reportedly having some time off from chess, hopefully after some time he will return to the sport of his life.

The Olympiad team next year could have another changing of the guard, with more new faces?

Key events next year din ang National and NCFP elections.

Dec-20-15  SugarDom: There are still people like us <pinoymaster> loyal to the country to the end.

We will focus on finding chess prodigies in the next year to replace those who abandon us.

Dec-30-15  pinoymaster77: After New Year na sad recap for Phil chess, for a possible new beginning / chapter?
Jan-01-16  pinoymaster77: Here's the Jan 1 list, major gainers are GM Rich, NM Docena (3 events here) while IM Hari dropped off from the top 10, from 2462 to 2435. But IM Hari had relatively good results in Penang and Johore recently in Dec play Philippines (Active players)

Jan-01-16  pinoymaster77: From recent sharings / text exchange from chessmates eh di lang pala yung issue ng chess not being part of 2015 SEAG kaya di maka justify ng performance, as a result of this, the GMs of that silver medal winning team in ASEAN Chess in the 2013 SEAG eh na downgrade na the said 30k per month allowance to a measly amount, kasama dun GM JP who took it hard.

- Kasama din daw sa criteria ng allowance for elite athlete yung performance, as measured by ELO rating. This may also have affected GM Ino's case, but there were other reasons, like PSC bungling the 1st set of documentation for Ino's classification as elite athlete (mataas pa ELO nya nuon, close to 2600).

- Chess reportedly got dropped as priority sport due to 'insufficient performance report', so kasama na dyan eh overall pressure on PSC allowances/payroll. One good result there is there's more thorough review and cleanup of those undeserving o nasisingit pa ng opisyal.

So aside from the above backdrop :

- Lets face it, there's a split in the NCFP ranks eversince the 2014 FIDE Elections, meron nang Pichay / Gary wing vs Bambol / Kirsan FIDE / Toti ACF wing. (shall we see a faceoff in the NCFP elections?)

- As result of above, most of the GMs have a trust issue with TD Jayson

- Yung post Wesley na sinasabi ng ibang NCFP bigwig like Atty Canobas na tapping an FST and sending GMs to European campaign eh di natuloy, drawing lang

With the above backdrop, we can see Philippine chess is in a deep hole and parang nasa kumunoy, pag nag try mag exert eh lalo pang nalulubog. It doesn't help that Mr. Pichay is now busy with preparations for his campaign. And before nga, per Sugar's point on politicos in sports, eh some private sponsors are wary of participating, umiiwas kay Mr. Pichay.

So, QUO VADIS, Philippine chess? Me thinks na imbes na magmukmok, eh all the more some basic / simple private sector help / action would be needed to stem the tide. One common vehicle would be the reported hosting here of the ASEAN Age Group sometime in June, this just happens every 4 to 5 years.

Jan-01-16  gokusano: That is why finding a potentially strong player in the mold of younger Eugene Torre will help NCFP's cause. The Philippines have to rise up despite some debacles in the past. Laban lang. Pag meron malakas na player, i develop at suportahan. Sa ganyan nag umpisa ang isang malakas na player na lumipat na ng federation. Meron pang lalabas na katulad nya basta masigasig lang ang NCFP at wag susuko parang FPJ dati. LOL!
