Apr-19-07 | | WillC21: <richard taylor> But that kid Cho could have just bought the gun on the black market(which he would have, since he was hell-bent on doing the tragic thing he did), if handguns could not be legally sold to U.S. citizens and resident aliens. In fact, the black market in countries like the U.S. and England supplies, sadly, guns as readily as marijuana, or at least just about. Isn't Manchester in the UK sometimes referred to as "Gunchester"? All those guns are legally obtained? :) Ok, so a few people own guns for self-defense purposes, what is wrong with that? Taking that away from them is not going to prevent a sicko like Cho from accessing a gun on the black market the way he(or anyone else) could a dimebag. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <WillC21> <whiskeyrebel> <acirce> alerted me the to real stuff up I made - this site - the "Odd Lie" page is completely NOT about my posts above - while not neccessarily "wrong" they are in the wrong place (there is no injunction here - this is just an unwritten rule) ...I missed the whole point - if you have also - scroll back to the start of - or just a bit earlier to - this Odd Lie page...my apologies. |

my reply would be (something like):
"quite right, we Kiwis all use our legs, toes, and feet" (or, hopefuly something falser, wittier, or odder... ) |

...See comment above re this Odd Lie page.
The penny dropped - wheni fisrt came here I was wondering what all thse pages were - I just rushed into print - lol. If you want to debate the subject seriously, go onto my forum if you want. As I said this is not the place! (Unwritten "law").
<Ok, so a few people own guns for self-defense purposes, what is wrong with that? Taking that away from them is not going to prevent a sicko like Cho from accessing a gun on the black market the way he(or anyone else) could a dimebag.> I disagree BTW but that isn't the point here! |

<WillC21>
The problem in my opinion is not the legality of weapons, but the gun culture. Reforming gun laws is the first step in excising this culture, by attaching a taboo to gun ownership. For example, I find the comment: <Ok, so a few people own guns for self-defense purposes, what is wrong with that?> to be offensive and naive (and I say this without meaning to be insulting), but in America I suppose this is quite a standard opinion. <toggle lies on> |

Apr-20-07 | | WillC21: <RT> Not really interested in an extended debate, sorry. Just pointing out the fact that Cho could get the gun in any event(probably even easier on the black market because no forms of ID, background check, etc. would be required). Obviously in an ideal world there would be no guns or weapons of any kind, and that would be the "ideal" solution :o) |

Apr-20-07 | | WillC21: <what...> It is a standard opinion. Why should an armed convict be able to break into my house and I have no(effective) way to defend myself if the situation arose? |

Apr-20-07 | | whiskeyrebel: Richard Taylor, after further consideration, I've decided to switch to cricket, sudoku, the Ware gambit and near beer. If someone breaks into MY home, I'll help them load out my TV and my wife for good measure. Well, I'm off to the candle light vigil. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <whiskeyrebel> [someone actually did break into to my home - I chased him off - the funny thing was - he was sitting there watching the only blue movie I own and had found no cash!! it is a great movie BTW.] But the truth is I have sign outside my house inviting crimms in to steal whatever they want. Further to the issue - I am all in favour of it all - if only I had an immense stock of hand guns I would sell them fast - I need the cash. I also sell drugs - but they are so easy to get here (in my suburb) I am not making my usual $50,000 /week. |

Apr-20-07 | | Whitehat1963: "We will find Saddam's well-hidden chemical and biological weapons programs, but only when people who know come forward and tell us where to look. While Saddam was in power, even a hint about his concealment and deception was a death sentence, often by unimaginable torture against whole families. Saddam had four years to hide things. We have had a few weeks to find them. Patience — and some help from free Iraqis — will be rewarded." -- Richard Pearle in a a USA Today op-ed, May 1, 2003. |
