Mar-29-12 | | Nightsurfer: You are very much welcome, <Zugzwangovich>! Herewith the proof by photo: http://shogiparis.blog.free.fr/publ... There <Almira Skripchenko> has taken part in a 3-board simultaneous game against Meijin Toshiyuki Moriuchi - herewith one more photo: http://www.echecs.asso.fr/Actus/565... - , and <lAmira Skripchenko> has won that 2-piece handicap against the Meijin. Herewith the report on the <International SHOGI Forum 2011> at Paris: http://www.madoka-Shogi.com/data/sh... ; <Almira Skripchenko>'s great performance has been featured in the paragraph that has the sub-headline <"Magnificent welcome party">. |

Apr-18-12 | | Atking: For all of you Chess&Shogi fans ChessBase has just published in which Mr. Habu could have won a game vs Vachier Lagrave!! (The game was draw and it was a simultaneous on 2 boards. But still it's impressive when we know how few time shogi champion have to play chess.). |
|
Apr-21-12 | | Atking: mews from Japan. Habu draws again vs a top GM This time White was Nigel Short. True it was a 2 boards exhibition as Villandry event of the last October (The GM playing the 2 boards was Vachier-Lagrave). But still a strong accomplishment for a man who is playing his own "World championship match".
The other boards was Mr. Kojima ~5 times Japan Champion (Elo around 2280). Mr Kojima in difficulty from the opening lost in 38 moves. |

Apr-21-12 | | Zugzwangovich: Habu held Nigel Short to a draw in an exhibition game in Tokyo yesterday afternoon. Here are the moves (Short was White): 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 0-0 9.d4 Bg4 10.a4 Qc8 11.ab ab 12.Ra8 Qa8 13.d5 Na5 14.Ba2 c6 15.h3 Bh5 16.Na3 cd 17.Bd5 Nd5 18.Qd5 Bf3 19.Qa8 Ra8 20.gf Nb3 21.Be3 Rb8 22.Rd1 f6 23.Rd5 b4 24.Rb5 Rb5 25.Nb5 bc 26.Nc3 Kf7 27.Kf1 Ke6 28.Ke2 f5 29.Kd3 f4 30.Bb6 Bh4 31.Nd5 Kd7 32.Kc3 Nc5 33.Bc5 dc 34.b4 cb 35.Nb4 Bf2 36.Nd3 Bd4 37.(Short refused draw offer) Kc4 Ke6 38.Nf4 ef 39.Kd4 g5 40.e5 h5 41.Ke4 g4 42.fg hg 43.hg f3 44.Kf3 Ke5 45.Kg3 Kf6 Draw (Actually Short played it out all the way to see if Habu knew how to hold the elementary draw.) |
|
Apr-24-12 | | Zugzwangovich: On GM Short's page, <Atking> suggests that Short played out the simple draw to the end for the public. This is better than my suggestion that he did it "to see if Habu knew how to hold the elementary draw", which would be tantamount to asking a university mathematics professor to demonstrate that he knew his multiplication tables. |

Apr-27-12 | | Nightsurfer: Hi, dear <Atking>, thank you very much for your posting of <Apr-18-12> when you have made us pay attention to that thrilling event at beautiful <Chateau Villandry>/France in the autumn of 2011> when the SHOGI-<Meijin>'s Yoshiharu Habu and Toshiyuki Moriuchi have faced Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in International Chess, herewith the reportage http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... that features that very interesting encounter. |
|
Apr-27-12 | | Nightsurfer: In case that you would ask why all that fuzz about SHOGI?! Just have a look at a very entertaining feature that the German-language program of <MTV>!! has aired on that great Japanese version of Chess, please turn to the link as follows http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9eZ... . And there you will see Rene Gralla play a short game of demonstration against <Daniel "Budi" Budiman>, herewith more information about the latter: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel... , who is a very popular TV-journalist who covers electronic games in <MTV>'s magazine GAME ONE together with his partner <Simon Krätschmer>, herewith more information about <Simon Krätschmer>: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_.... Both <Daniel "Budi" Budiman> and <Simon Krätschmer> have been the presenters of that very production on SHOGI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9eZ... that has been aired by <MTV>. |

Oct-18-12 | | Nightsurfer: I would like to express my sincerest <domo arigato> to <Atking> who has shared with us the information that the life-time Meijin <Yoshiharu Habu> has taken part in a mixed event of Chess and <Shogi> at Kobe in September 2012 - together with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave ; the thrilling challenge has been covered by the blog of beautiful Alexandra Kosteniuk, please see http://www.chessblog.com/2012/10/co... and by <Kyodo News>, please check out http://english.kyodonews.jp/photos/...! |

Dec-24-12 | | wordfunph: FM Yoshiharu Habu --- the "Garry Kasparov of Shogi"! |
|
Oct-31-13 | | Zugzwangovich: Shogi news: Moriuchi leads Watanabe 2-0 in the best-of-seven Ryu-O series, which as <ughaibu> points out can be considered to be a world championship. Watanabe's been the winner of this series for the last nine years. |

Jan-02-14 | | nummerzwei: He's back in the ring, playing currently in the 24th Cracovia Festival in Krakow, Poland. |

Apr-25-14 | | Rookiepawn: A nicer (or more neutral) way of saying "non-Japanese" is "gaikokujin". Regarding Go, it fascinates me because the simplicity of the rules (you can start playing after no more than 10 minutes of explanation) hide an ocean of complexity. Strategically talking it seems to me far more subtle than chess, for it is really hard to know whether you're winning or losing. After a Go game, I see little white and black spots flickering before my eyes... |

Apr-16-15 | | Catholic Bishop: This guy may be the most naturally gifted intellectual game player of all time, considering his stature as possibly the strongest Shogi player in history, a 2400 fide rating in chess, as well as being amateur 2 dan in Go. |

Why would he need to? He's been earning an average of around a million USD a year from 1993 to this year from Shogi alone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshih... He's married to a popular Japanese actress, has enough free time to dabble in chess, even occasionally making GMs look like patzers from those Paul Morphy games. I'd say concentration is not something he's mightily concerned with. |

Feb-11-23 | | Zugzwangovich: Trying for his 100th career title at age 52, Habu yesterday conjured up a scintillating attack to upend Sota Fujii, the greatest heavyweight going today, and tie their best-of-seven Osho title match at 2-2. Fujii's only 20 but for the last few years has been kicking butts left and right a la Tal in his early 20s. |

 | | beatgiant: <HeMateMe>Kobayashi Maru. So you got the language, number of syllables, and last vowel right. Still, I highly doubt classmates in school teased Yoshiharu as the impossible test kid. This is probably better than the time you mistook an Australian flag for a British one. Bravo.... |
