Jan-20-14  wordfunph: <jess> lol! i have 'only' 900 volumes compared to GM Schmid or roughly 1.8% of his treasure.

today i got two books from a friend..

+ Official Rules of Chess, 2nd Edition by Morrison

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Boo...

+ Bobby Fischer Goes to War by Edmonds & Eidinow

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Boo...

long way to go! :)

Jan-20-14  TheFocus: I tried to count mine, but I got a phone call and had to start over.

Lost count while thinking of a TV show I had watched.

Then the pizza guy showed up.

Tried again. Another phone call from a telemarketer.

Started over and then Boris the cat wanted some petting.

Laid down took a nap. Gave it up.

This book collecting is getting out of hand.

Shoot Boris, you count'em.

Jan-20-14  parisattack: I am gradually putting my collection in this -

http://www.collectorz.com/book/book...

Its sort of overkill but since I have all my opening books in it now I'm in for the duration. Obviously, Excel is perfectly fine, also.

Jan-20-14  wordfunph: <parisattack> it is my dream to see your library, thanks in advance :)
Jan-25-14  parisattack: Hi <wordfunph> Sadly 2/3 in boxes at this time. I have other book collections (tho chess the largest) and just no room.

I am currently (and slowly) building a database as above and will gladly send you a copy when complete. It pales in significance to many of the grand collections I've seen, but its the best I could do over the years on a budget.

Jan-30-14  GREYSTRIPE: The McCullough "Truman" - Pulizter Prize winner-biography..

FSR: I got an e-mail from Andy Ansel. He is a friend of David DeLucia's, and I have purchased DeLucia books from him in the past. For anyone unfamiliar with DeLucia's books, read Chess Notes 5323, http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... and, most relevantly, 6189, http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/.... They are incredibly gorgeous, phenomenally well-produced books (and the price reflects that). On to Andy's e-mail:

<DeLucia is coming out with a new Fischer book. This will be a limited edition ( roughly 160 copies) and things not mentioned in his blurb below A) Roughly the first 100 pages are pre 1970
B) He gives Fischer’s complete diary (300+ pages)

I will be selling the book—though no payment is due now please let me know of possible interest so I can have him reserve enough copies for me. Also feel free to pass to others you think may have interest

Thanks
Andy

From David DeLucia:

I wanted to mention to you that my daughter Alessandra (with my close supervision) has taken the initiative to do another book, Bobby Fischer Triumph and Despair. It is 785 pages and is by far the largest body of primary source Fischer material in one publication. Some of the highlights include:

1. Complete 1999 diary written in Fischer's hand (300+ pages); 2. Eight Fischer annotated games from Herceg Novi 1970; 3. Seven unrecorded (I believe) training games (1992) between Fischer and Gligoric (6) and Eugene Torre (1); 4. Over 100 pages of correspondence between Fischer and Gligoric from 1973-1995; 5. The Ed Edmondson notes from the early to mid 1970's regarding Fischer telephone conversations (quite insightful); 6. 62-page typescript by Fischer elaborating the differences between the Batsford and Simon & Schuster editions of My 60 Memorable Games; 7. Two letters written by Fischer to the U.S. consulate while incarcerated in the detention center in Japan; 8. Numerous other letters, ephemera and memorabilia.

I believe this book, in depth and content, compared to Bobby Fischer Uncensored is about on the same level of comparison as In Memoriam is to the second edition of A Few Old Friends. The book is chronologically arranged as in BFU with some overlap but the majority of material is new. I expect the book with slipcase to be printed and bound by mid March. The price will be $525 + shipping.>

Obviously given the price and subject matter this will only be of interest to a small number of collectors. Personally, I passed, both because of the price and because I find it depressing reading Fischer's non-chess writings, which are full of crazy anti-Semitic screeds. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby.... But Fischer fanatics may want to get this material.

For anyone interested, Andy's e-mail address is aansel AT verizon.net (put that in normal format, of course).

Feb-05-14  TheFocus: DeLucia's last two volume set was sold with the sales proceeds going to charity. I have all of his books, and will buy this one also.
Feb-07-14  morfishine: I just finished 'The Chess Mind' by Gerald Abrahams first published in 1951 http://www.amazon.com/The-chess-min...

I found it absorbing and very well written, though parts were difficult to read. The book focuses on thinking and thought processes as it relates to chess. Abrahams discusses the mind and how it works touching on the areas of vision, creativity, and imagination (and more).

Included are 47 annotated games, all well known.

I think this book would benefit just about anybody including master-strength players. It was very revealing as to certain areas of how we think and why our chess may go stale from time-to-time. A very refreshing read that I highly recommend.

Luckily, I got my copy for about $12 total including shipping from the UK

*****

Feb-08-14  parisattack: www.abebooks.com is a good site to check for chess books. If you don't mind the old Penguin PB, there are some copies of 'The Chess Mind' available at decent prices.

As <Morfishine> probably notice with his 'Chess Mind' purchase, postage from UK can be pricey if the seller doesn't offer the UK equivalent of media-mail.

Serious students of this topic (chess mind) should definitely consider DeGroot's ground-breaking 'Thought and Choice' tome.

Aagaard's 'Inside the Chess Mind' also worthy of study.

Feb-08-14  morfishine: <parisattack> Thanks for the link to Abebooks! I've bookmarked it, no pun intended

Good point about media-mail for overseas purchases: Though it took 10-days to get here, ship cost was only about $6

Feb-14-14  hms123: Here is the start of a review of a Kindle book by User: Once

<Tactics and Tales

by Steve Goldberg

Once Upon a Chess Game, by Will Once, 2013 Kindle Edition, Algebraic Notation, 172pp. $5.00

Despite having had the wonderful opportunity to review well more than 100 chess publications over the years, I can honestly say that I have never come across an offering quite like Once Upon a Chess Game, a Kindle e-book by Will Once.>

  FSR: Luc Henris in <The Complete Albin Counter-Gambit> demonstrates in analyzing his Games 2 and 3 that Black can equalize against the line recommended by Avrukh in his book on 1.d4 and Bronznik in his book <1.d4 - Beat the Guerrillas!>. After 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5 3.dxe5 d4 4.Nf3 Nc6 5.a3 Nge7 6.b4 Ng6 7. Bb2 a5! 8.b5 Ncxe5 9.Nxe5 Nxe5 10.e3 Be6 11.Bxd4 Nxc4 12.Qc2 Nd6 13.Bd3 Qg5 14.f4 Qh4+ 15.g3 Qh3! 16.e4 Rd8! 17.f5 Bc4! 18. Nc3 (so far as in V Popov vs P Potapov, 2010 (1-0, 25)) 18...Be7! (a novelty originally suggested by John L Watson) 19.f6 (the best try for advantage), Black's best is 19...gxf6!? Alternatively, after 16.Nc3 (the other critical move), as in M Palladino vs L Dulany, 2011 (1/2-1/2, 29), 16...Be7! 17.e4 and now after 17...Rd8 or 17...0-0 18.f5 Bc4! Black is OK! Houdini 3 agrees that White's advantage in all of these lines is somewhere between diddly (+0.15) and squat (0.00).

FSR: A couple things of interest. First, on Facebook, there is an excellent forum, Chess Book Collectors. Definitely worth joining. Even if you don't care about Facebook (yes, Virginia, it's a huge time-suck), you should consider joining just to join that forum, and then ignoring everything else on Facebook. Its members are very knowledgeable. In addition to recommending a lot of good books that I've bought, they also enabled me to complete my years-long quest for the first edition of <Modern Chess Openings>. I now finally have every edition of MCO.

Second, antiqbook.com is a good source for out-of-print books. Peter Tamburro, one of the members of the Chess Book Collectors forum, turned me on to it. Tamburro and James Pratt, the editor of <British Chess Magazine>, had mentioned <Emil Josef Diemer 1908-1990: A Life Devoted To Chess> as being worth getting. I observed that it was insanely expensive, at least $74.96 used on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Emil-Josef-Di... Tamburro pointed out that Glynn's Books in England was offering it on antiqbook.com for a much more reasonable price, $20-something U.S. I bought it, and Mrs. Glynn out of the goodness of her heart upgraded me to air mail! (I had cheaped out and only paid for the least expensive method of delivery, which could have taken a long time.) I received it with stunning alacrity. It's a fun book, which could pretty much be called <How to Play the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit> or <Diemer Plays the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit>. Glynn's is still offering another copy of it for $28.67 plus postage. http://www.antiqbook.com/search.php... If you get it, tell her that Frederick Rhine recommended her.

FSR: I see that Schandorff in his repertoire book, in discussing White's best response to the Albin, essentially parrots Avrukh. Kaufman in <The Kaufman Repertoire for Black & White> deviates with 9.Qxd4!? (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5 3.dxe5 d4 4.Nf3 Nc6 5.a3 Nge7 6.b4 Ng6 7. Bb2 a5! 8.b5 Ncxe5 9.Qxd4) rather than 9.Nxe5. Henris says that 9.Qxd4 gives White good chances for an advantage, but that Black can hold a draw with correct play.

Watson, who as I mentioned previously busted Avrukh's analysis with 18...Be7!, recommends deviating earlier with 5.Nbd2. Then one of the main lines continues 5...Nge7 6.Nb3 Nf5 (Watson and Henris agree that 6...Ng6 is no good) 7.e4! (suggested over a century ago by Schlechter) dxe3 8.Qxd8+ followed by 9.fxe3. White is up a doubled pawn, and his pawns are hard to attack. Though this doesn't look too imposing, Watson says that White has a huge plus score. Henris admits that "basically only two results are possible and Black must struggle." (p. 408) So maybe that is the way to go for White. Who wants to play a gambit and then be reduced to trying to grovel a draw in an inferior ending?

May-29-14  parisattack: <FSR> I had the most difficulty finding MCO 3.

I remember being a tad disappointed when MCO 1 arrived (bought it on ABE) to find the card-like covers, almost looks like a small notebook.

I've only seen two MCO 1s - is yours similar to mine?)

FSR: <parisattack> Yes. I agree, it's not an impressive-looking book.
Jul-07-14  TonyRo: <parisattack> The Killer Sicilian has indeed been delayed for a quite a while (that's my fault), but rest assured - I turned in the final manuscript a little over a week ago. It's being edited and typeset as we speak. ;)
Jul-09-14  parisattack: <TonyRo> Good to hear! I'll be watching for it. Guessing October-November based on my publishing experiences.
Jul-09-14  TonyRo: <parisattack> That's what on the website too - if I hear back from Everyman about more exact times I'll keep you up to date. Thanks for hanging in there, and I'm truly sorry about the wait!
Jul-10-14  parisattack: Good things are often worth the wait; thanks for keeping us in the loop!

Anything on the Haberditz line? I mentioned once in my forum its the only ....e5 Sicilian with no literature of its own...

Jul-10-14  TonyRo: I hope everyone enjoys it. The manuscript is quite large - over 400 pages, but I'm not positive that correlates to actual pages in any way. I've tried to give a lot ton of analysis and push the theory of the Kalashnikov and my chosen Anti-Sicilians as far as I could. There are a lot of interesting improvements (for both colors) and new ideas.

Nothing on the Haberditz or the more common Lowenthal. I could never convince myself that allowing Nd6+ was ever a good idea for Black!

I took a relatively strict repertoire approach with 4...e5 5.Nb5 and only 5...d6, just to keep everything cohesive and succinct. With that said, in basically every variation I give two choices for Black. In all of the 6.c4 chapters, the aggressive early-f5 lines (such as 6.c4 Be7 7.b3 f5! or 7.N1c3 a6 8.Na3 f5!?) as well as the more usual positional tries with early ...Bg5 are covered. Against 6.N1c3 I give a very brief overview of the older main lines of 6...a6 7.Na3 b5, but I focus almost exclusively on the more modern 7...Be7.

If you have any other questions about the book or repertoire choices, let me know.

Jul-10-14  parisattack: Hi <TonyRo>. Thank you for the preview! I have perhaps six books on the Kala per se, beginning I think with Silman's Neo- book.

I played the Pelikan in the late 60s/early 70s long before it was popular. I was impressed with Larsen's games against Robatsch (1961) and Olafsson (1958) and had good success with it. I think the Olaffson is the trunk game for the Sveshnikov Proper variation.

I've never played the Kala but it *seems* the delayed ...Nf6 should offer black options.

I agree, allowing Nd6 looks awful. But the Haberditz seems OK, Ulf Andersson played it a few times.

(As you know - sadly - not much interest in openings or books here on CG.com. My forum was devoted to those topics and seldom was visited. You can see the dates on this forum... Is there a discussion of your book at ChessPublishing?)

Thanks again!

Jul-10-14  TonyRo: You have quite the history! I thought I might be the only person who still owned a copy of Silman's early work on what is now known as the Kalashnikov!

The delayed ...Nf6 indeed offers Black new options, but White too of course - 6.c4 in general and even 6.N1c3 a6 7.Na3 b5 8.Nd5 and now either 8...Nce7 9.c4! or 8...Nge7 9.c4!.

Interesting that there's little discussion of openings here - I thought this was really the entire point of this site for a very long time!

There is a discussion in the Open Sicilians forum. You might expect that the last few pages are people asking me when I'm going to be done, but there's some useful content before that!

Jul-11-14  parisattack: <You might expect that the last few pages are people asking me when I'm going to be done, but there's some useful content before that!>

And all along I've been blaming Everyman! But now the truth is out <TonyRo>. ;)

There is a book by *I think* a Hungarian master about his own ...e5 Sicilians and *I think* has a few Kalas in it. I'll have to hunt it up, see.

Any other chess books planned after the Killer Sicilian hits the streets?
