Oct-31-07  technical draw: <TIMER> I don't think you can borrow from the loanshark enough to catch me!
Oct-31-07  TIMER: <technical draw> I have the record of the biggest loan from the loanshark (I believe) of around 100,000 chessbucks (literally) during the champions leg- so you don't know what special arrangements I have with him..
Oct-31-07  technical draw: <TIMER> Great, how are your artificial knees working?
Oct-31-07  TIMER: <technical draw> I was still well in the top half of the table when I stopped making bets, but with the 1 % interest alone I zoomed past everyone else at the bottom- they didn't stand a chance. So your biggest threat is someone reaching 20 or 30 thousand and then the loanshark gives them everything he can, thinking they are a guarantee..

I was even dreaming of becoming the first chessbookie millionaire with all those funds, instead of playing safe.

Oct-31-07  technical draw: Yes, <TIMER> But now you're in the minus and the loanshark would only give you chump change, not enough to make a last minute rush for last place.
Oct-31-07  TIMER: <tecnical draw> Well I haven't paid back my loan from when I was last in the lead. My loan is in the upper 6000's now, so it depends how big your loan is.

Also I haven't yet given up on going for 20,000+ and then I might decide to come back again! (more likely I will sit on my chessbucks this time though)

Oct-31-07  technical draw: <TIMER> My loan right now is $7,902..
Nov-01-07  Micawbr: Chessbookie - Will you check the Loanshark, I haven't been offered a loan since Oct 26th or 27th.

Thanks,
Tom

Annie K.: <Micawbr> the Loanshark won't offer you another loan as long as your net worth is positive, if you already owe him something.

<TIMER> I like your attitude - there aren't many here who can try to threaten the leaders on both ends at the same time. ;)

<TD> Excellent choices with Luxembourg and Monaco! :)

Nov-01-07  ruzomberok: I hope Bacrot is an World Cup-candidate (is it the right name?) That tournament Magnus Carlsen lot against Levon Aronian. I hope Bacrot is with us next time. Winning over Ivanchuk is really hard! I thought only Kramnik and Anand could do that. But he won against Nakamura for not so long time ago? And drew against Carlsen?
Nov-01-07  Micawbr: <Annie K> the Loanshark won't offer you another loan as long as your net worth is positive, if you already owe him something.

Okay, I was probably on the plus side during that time. I could have paid off the loan yesterday, exactly 208 funds 208 debt! <sigh> <grin>

Thanks,
Tom

Nov-01-07  malthrope: <Chess Bookie> As November 2nd is the first and only official 'rest day' at the ETC. I assume the betting time and settlement date will be adjusted accordingly shortly? It would save many of us not to have to wake up early tomorrow morning to bet on Round #6 which doesn't begin till Saturday morning on November 3rd! Thanks! ;-)

Nov-01-07  technical draw: <Annie K> Just in case I also have as back ups Finland and Switzerland.
Nov-01-07  technical draw: My loan debt is up to $8181.00....(one way ticket to Memphis)
Nov-01-07  malthrope: Thank You <Chess Bookie> all is order now and we can bet on Round #6 of the ETC tourney with plenty of time to either further procrastinate or contemplate! ;-)

Also, kudos for your final solution to the 'Ivanchuk-Leko' Rapids Match in Mukachevo, Ukraine (October 25-28)... I too made a betting mistake and bet more on Leko than I wanted, so to solve my dilemma decided it best to resolve it by using Chuky to cover (where I intended it the other way around favouring Chuky to win).

When the last day came about and the 12 scheduled games finished had to laugh as now we had a draw! The betting pool was around 10,000 for Chuky and Peter in total with about 12% of the pool on a drawn match. Then the tiebreaks started! ~lol~ We'll never know for sure if this was going to lead only to a Sudden Death final game and one winner but in any event your solution was a fair one. <clap>

The time control is 120 minutes plus 30 second increments per move from move number 1 (no additional time added). I think we have Karpov to thank for the three rest days! Should be a fun chess tournament to be betting on. Still haven't made up my mind as too how I'll bet on this one...

<ruzomberok> - thanks much for your tip on Sweden a few rounds back! I too felt that is was going to be a close one and won money by betting on them. They almost pulled it off again today but Berg was unable to win but it was it close! :-)

<Annie K.><feripe: The important thing is that CG has reached a veredict and it won't happen again. And we have a Fredrik to hunt.>

Yep - the final 'hunt' is on! ;-) - Mal

PS: <technical draw: My loan debt is up to $8181.00....(one way ticket to Memphis)>

I bet he's <TD> already singing the Loanshark cellar Memphis 'juice' blues! :-)))

Nov-02-07  malthrope: Just posted by <Chess Bookie>:

"ANNOUNCEMENTS: Khalifman will not be participating in Liga De Campiones due to emergency surgery. All bets on Khalifman will be refunded. We wish him a speedy and safe recovery."

Ditto that. Let's hope the Russian Bear has a most sucessful surgery and that everything will be as it was once before with 'El Khalif' playing his fantastic theoritcal chess once again! :-) Best Regards, - Mal

PS: From the official website - "El Campeón Mundial en 1999, el ruso Alexander Khalifman, ha tenido que ser ingresado de última hora en un hospital de Rusia; será sustituido por el Campeón de Europa Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu."

Loose translation - GM Alexander Khalifman is in a Russian hospital and he will be replaced by GM Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (ROU 2668)

Nov-02-07  Ben2000: I have just cheated the Loanshark!
I simply take his 100 offer then spend it and use the back key on my internet explorer to go back to the page he offers me the money! and amazingly he offerd me another 100 chessbucks! I did this several times and get a 1100 chessbuck loan in one day! Despite I am cheating to be the biggest losser it is still unfair so I had to tell it.

Oh God please forgive me...

Nov-02-07  technical draw: <Ben2000> I wish you luck in cheating the loan shark. Just let me know where to send the flowers. When they yelled, "loanshark cheaters into the pool!" I was already at the other end drying myself off. You have to lose $5,000 chessbucks just to tie me TODAY. So bad luck in your quest. TD (no broken bones yet)
Nov-02-07  malthrope: I wouldn't feel too bad <Ben2000> :-) I'm sure that our resident Zen Master of the cellar depths <TD> could write a book filled with secrets that he's learned over the course of time that would make your discovery the tip of the iceberg! In any event the <Chess Bookie> is a kind hearted soul and that's to the benefit of all of us! Good Luck in your quest may it be 'high' or 'low!' :^) - Mal

Uh, guys? I don't know how Fredrik feels about it, but this sounds a little scary to me... :p

Nov-04-07  malthrope: <Annie K.: Uh, guys? I don't know how Fredrik feels about it, but this sounds a little scary to me... :p>

It's all in fun <Annie K.> I've already stated that my only job here is to qualify for the Championship Winter Leg finals <period>.

Who wins and who places 10th (or dead last) it's all the same to me... Since I've invested most of my c-bucks in the eventual winners of the ETC and Liga de Campeones tourneys. When those bets all get cleared up and scored then we'll have a much better idea of the current overall standings! ;-) <sheepish grin exposed> - Mal

PS: Go RUS (Men), Go POL (Women), Go Topy and GO Pono! :-)))

Nov-04-07  feripe: <It's all in fun <Annie K.>> :^)

And Mal
<<<I've already stated that my only job here is to qualify for the Championship Winter Leg finals <period>>>>. How does it work? Only the top 10 qualify to the finals? What finals? As you can see, it's the first time I'm top 10...

Nov-04-07  whiteshark: Black/Black/Draw
A bad day for white, but not for whiteshark!
Nov-05-07  malthrope: <feripe: <<<I've already stated that my only job here is to qualify for the Championship Winter Leg finals <period>>>>. How does it work? Only the top 10 qualify to the finals? What finals? As you can see, it's the first time I'm top 10...>

Hey <feripe> welcome aboard! :-)

Chess Bookie has separated the betting sequences into the 4 seasons with the <Winter Leg> being the Championship final! You can access the - ChessBookie Hall of Fame - by either clicking the hyperlink just under the Leaderboard (upper right corner on the Chess Bookie Forum page) or clicking on the link that I just provided. Also, in the <Help File> in:

• "What are 'Legs'? What is the Championship?"

Link... // - ChessBookie Game Help Page - ...and there you can read how it's all set up.

In each qualifying season - Spring, Summer and Autumn - the top 10 qualifiers with the highest scores are selected to participate by winning each leg. In the Championship final <Winter Leg> they all start with the incentive of having 10,000 c-bucks (instead of the normal 1,000 c-bucks) for the Championship in which the grand winner is inducted into the - ChessBookie Hall of Fame -

Everyone can of course play. Note <TIMER>'s valiant effort to win a Championship Winter's leg with the disadvantage of starting only with the normal allotment of 1,000 c-bucks. He almost pulled it off too! ;-)

It's that simple! Good Luck! :^) Regards, - Mal

PS: <whiteshark: Black/Black/Draw A bad day for white, but not for whiteshark!>

Way to GO! <whiteshark>... I can hear the Jaw's soundtrack now! ;-)

Nov-05-07  Fredrik: <feripe><Annie K.><Malthrope> Happy hunting to you all! Being the hunted doesn't scare me, I've been in this position before...

I don't think that my current lead is big enough to just sit and wait to see if you can catch me, therefore I will try to extend my lead a bit more.

<Chess Bookie> By the way, when will this leg end?
