Chessgames Bookie: <That is including unpaid loans and the player's starting funds? As well as the the parimutuel take? I would have guessed higher than 79,042 on just the juice and decimal shaving.>

You are right; the 79K in my account has nothing to do with the Loanshark at all--that's just the 5% juice, plus the benefits of decimal rounding.

The juice used to be 10% but we lowered it to 5%, the idea being that if it's easier for people to make a profit the game will be more fun and competitive. We could get rid of the juice entirely, but I think it adds a nice degree of realism into the simulation.

About the Loanshark:

We've never kept tabs on the Loanshark's profit/loss but I would expect that he's an overall loser, with so many players running up a huge tab and skipping town before the next leg starts. The loanshark was added to the game for three reasons: (1) to inject more capital into the economy, (2) to make sure that anybody who enjoys the game doesn't have to wait for the next leg if they want to continue playing, and (3) to create an additional strategic element.

Plus, some people find that the Loanshark's gruff demeanor adds to the comedic flavor of the game.

~ROFL~ I'm telling you he's just a sweet guy with a c-bucks heart of gold! ~lol~ ;-) - Mal

Then that's about 1.6 Million chessbucks bet in the fall leg! So far.

<We've never kept tabs on the Loanshark's profit/loss but I would expect that he's an overall loser>

Yes, the Loanshark's smoking a cheap cigar, but that's one heck of a fancy chess set!

Thanks for the info and background on the CB Game.

cu8sfan: There should be bets on the Holiday Present Hunt (Chessgames Present Hunt Clues Page).

Which user will solve the next clue?

How long will it take to be solved?

When will the next clue be up?

What kind of clue will it be (Anagram, Number theory, Pun ...)?

The possibilities are endless!

Dec-08-07  Micawbr: <Chess Bookie>

Are there any more planned betting events for the fall leg on the near horizon?

Are there any plans to set up bets on each of the four games of the World Cup finals, as well as on the winner?

Thank you.

Chessgames Bookie: Several new wagers are available before the start of the World Cup Game tomorrow:

Bet on individual games:

World Cup: Rd 6.2: Kamsky vs Carlsen

World Cup: Rd 6.2: Karjakin vs Shirov

Also you can bet, again, on the winner:

World Cup 2007: WINNER (2)

And you can bet, again, on the final two:

World Cup: THE FINAL TWO (2)

WannaBe: Interesting 'dilemma' I have, I currently have Karjakin to win over Shirov, 200 chessbucks to win 478, depending on how the tie-break odds go, I may hedge my bet... =)

WannaBe: Can't hedge my bet... =( Guess I'll have to ride it out.
Dec-11-07  malthrope: <WannaBe: Can't hedge my bet... =( Guess I'll have to ride it out.>

Hehehe... <WannaBe> Yep - I'm in the same position except my 'betting coin' is reversed and I've got it all bet on the great Shirov! (even a worse position to hedge ones bets). Chances seem about equal now... Both are great Rapids and Blitz players and it all boils down to who makes the last mistake, or perhaps which color is drawn in the almighty Armageddon game...

There was something that <whiskeyrebel> said recently that caught my wondering eye (posted in - Gata Kamsky - Chessgames Biography page). He posted:

<whiskeyrebel: these knockouts aren't for mollycoddles. <[*]>>

Hehehe.... He's so bloody right it hurts! ~lol~

Oh and Annie... < Annie K. <[...] Even worse, I have a not-insignificant sum tied up in bets for the cup winner, that would be comfortable enough if any one of them wins, but several of the contenders who have advanced this far are not among them... [...]>>

Yes, I know! With Magnus now out (he was the 3rd most bet on player in the original - World Cup 2007: WINNER -), Shirov at 21:1 (pool = 655 and pays off $219 per $10 bet), Kamsky at 37:1 (pool = 380 and pays off $377 per $10 bet), and lastly Karjakin at 69:1 (pool = 204 and pays off a whopping $703 per $10 bet). As <brankat> confessed (you all know what I mean) that he had $100 bet here, so that means there is still $7,311 c-bucks loose for the taking out there should Karjakin win it all.

My original bets were with: Ivanchuk, Mamedyarov, Radjabov and Aronian - of which every single one of them has been eliminated! ~ROFL~ So, it was truly gracious of the <ChessBookie> to give everyone a '2nd chance' with - World Cup 2007: WINNER (2) - and - World Cup: THE FINAL TWO (2) - It really is the 'Holiday Season' after all! :^)

Well, it's high time to make another fresh pot of coffee... The Semi-Final tiebreak KO match 'Karjakin-Shirov' starts in less than an hour! ~lol~

All the Best, - Mal

PS: <[*]> 'mollycoddle' - Definition: 1) [noun] a man or boy who is used to being coddled; a milksop. 2) [verb - used with object] to coddle; pamper.

Dec-11-07  TIMER: I am lately winning almost all my bets here- but unfortunately I can only go up a few thousand due to the 200 bet limit- I can only make it to about -10,000!
Dec-11-07  malthrope: <TIMER: I am lately winning almost all my bets here- but unfortunately I can only go up a few thousand due to the 200 bet limit- I can only make it to about -10,000!>

Hehehe... I'm almost in the same position <TIMER>! I've been betting on 'Shirov' and 'Kamsky' to win everything possible that's in sight! I wasn't as heavy in debt (to our favorite Loanshark) as you were. So, I might just make it back to negative -2K. That's if I'm lucky! ~lol~ :^) - Mal

PS: I'll favor Gata in the Finals, btw. I'm really just hoping for a great hard fought 4 game match between these two seasoned chess veterans and take whatever comes (tiebreaks?), etc.

Dec-14-07  NakoSonorense: There is hope!

564. NakoSonorense -438

and after...

<<YOU WIN! COLLECT 4267>>

I'll be in 15th place with 3,629 chessbux!

Dec-14-07  pawnofdoom: <NakoSonorense> Wow what was that bet on? All I have ever won recently is a bet that Kamsky would win today
Dec-14-07  NakoSonorense: <pawnofdoom> I bet 200 chessbucks on <21...Nb5> in the Timmerman game! Odds 20:1 xD

<chessbookie> When does this leg end?

Dec-16-07  sushijunkie: How exactly are people racking up $10k+ when you may only bet 200 at a time? You can't be hitting *that* many longshots, and there are only so many bets to be had. I'm no stranger to sports betting, but I'm a little flummoxed on this one.
Dec-16-07  malthrope: <sushijunkie: How exactly are people racking up $10k+ when you may only bet 200 at a time? [...]>

<sushijunkie> - You need to read the - ChessBookie Game Help Page - in particular - 'What are minimum bets? Maximum bets?' - ChessBookie Game Help Page - As you move up the ladder in c-bucks (thus increasing your 'Net Worth'), so does your betting ceiling from $200 (min) to $10,000 (max) c-bucks! That's how it's done... :^) Regards, - Mal

Chessgames Bookie: We read this on TWIC (http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/twi...)

<<Russian Championship Superfinals> The Russian Championship Superfinals take place 17th-30th December 2007. Pplayers are: Men: Alekseev, Amonatov, Vitjugov, Grischuk, Dreev, Inarkiev, Morozevich, Rychagov, Svidler, Timofeev, Tomashevsky, Jakovenko. Women: Galliamova, Gunina, Matveeva, Kovalevskaya, Korbut, N.Kosintseva, T.Kosintseva, Kosteniuk, Ovod, Stepovaya, Tairova, Shadrina>

But then it leads us to http://www.russiachess.org/ which seems to have very little to say on the subject. Is this tournament going on? Does anybody have enough information so we can put bets up?

Dec-17-07  redribbon3700: Chessbookie when does the fall league end?

<ChessBookie> - It looks like 'ChessPro' also has posted some useful info on the 60th Russian Championship Superfinal... >> http://chesspro.ru/_events/2007/chr...

The games will start tomorrow (December 18th) and it runs through December 30th (Christmas, December 25th, being the only rest day). The Russian website that TWIC listed [ http://www.russiachess.org/ ] should be the main one to carry the games 'live' (from my past experience).

Today (December 17th) will be the Opening Ceremony and drawing of the lots, etc. Then it should all get sorted out very quickly with the pairings announced and posted round by round and games live! :-)

Also, the Annual 'XVII Torneo Internacional CIUDAD DE PAMPLONA' will start on December 22nd and run through December 29th (Category 17) with 8 GM's including an Open event (running with the bulls - optional!)... >> http://www.chesspamplona.com/Englis...

This is the tournament that GM Morozevich won last year! :^) Now he's playing the role of 1st seed in 60th Russian Championship Superfinals.

Hope that all helps just a bit... :) - Mal

Dec-17-07  malthrope: Missed one - December 21st (between rounds #3 and #4) is also a 'Rest Day' in the 60th Russian Championship Superfinal... :^)
Dec-17-07  chessmoron: Konstantin Sakaev replaces Alekseev.
Dec-18-07  malthrope: <ChessBookie> - Looks like two replacements have been made in the Women's section - Kosteniuk and Galliamova - were replaced by Olga Girya and Natalija Pogonina (reasons unknown). Plus, as already pointed out by <chessmoron> in the Men's section Evgeny Alekseev was replaced by Konstantin Sakaev... Regards, - Mal

Chessgames Bookie: <redribbon3700> The fall leg will end on December 30th, at the conclusion of the Russian Superfinals Tournament. Wagering is now open on the 2nd round of this event.

Dec-18-07  malthrope: Oh and one more <ChessBookie> other than the null replacement bets for two players in the Women's section: 'Kosteniuk & Galliamova' (Men's section: Alekseev - you've got and thanks!) already mentioned... :-) The betting for - Russian Superfinals: WINNER (Men) - and - Russian Superfinals: WINNER (Women) - you had ending at 8 AM EST.

Round #1 officially started at 3 PM Moscow time (Moscow GMT +3 and EST GMT -5). So, both these bets should have been ended at 7 AM EST (instead of 8 AM). I see now that all subsequent bets for the - Russian Superfinals (2007) - you have ending an hour before the round starts at 6 AM EST. Good move <ChessBookie> ! :^) Regards, - Mal
