Annie K.: Thanks Mal. :) Actually, I wasn't just being a contrarian with the Leko bets - I was really betting on what I thought had a good chance of happening (hence the good profit - I haven't placed many alternative bets). Sure, Leko likes to draw with Black almost as much as Kramnik, BUT that's mostly against peer level opposition; he also has a history of not being adverse to taking a hard line with lower rated opponents, particularly when the game's result makes a significant difference in the tournament standings. So when I took a good look at the Gustaffson-Leko pairing last night, I just thought hmmm.... I reckon Leko will try hard in this one - and he can probably make it too. In this case, Leko's being less of a trophy target than Kramnik serves him well, keeps him more "under the radar" where opponent preparation is concerned. And while he has a notorious tendency to get nervous in the last rounds of tourneys, and gets underestimated for that, this is - again - usually NOT the case when he's playing lower rated opposition.

You did great Annie! ;) Hope you hold on to <1st place> for a spell and put all us guys in our place! <sheepish grin> Think what I'm happiest about is how Nepo is doing! Just a great outing for him amongst the SUPER GM stars! And, for GM Leko too, as sometimes we tend to forget what a great technical Chess player he really is! :) OK - place your last round Dortmund bets and "Good Luck!" :^) Best Regards, - Mal

Annie K.: Dropped about 600 today due to minor losses and tournament winner & perfecta bets... but I'll live I guess! ;)

Today's upsets should be interesting... the Perfecta Leko+_____ bets should have a great payoff for whoever bet on them, but with Ivanchuk, Mamedyarov, Nepomniachtchi and Gustafsson all sharing second, that Perfecta sounds like a nightmare to pay off! Which of these players should count as "favorites" and which as "underdogs"? :s

Poor Bookie. ;p

Jul-06-08  malthrope: Hehehe... Well Annie 20/20 Technologies has done a great job with their <ChessBookie> betting systems! It's all math and all programmed! <gin> I did well today with...

SETTLEMENT DATE: Jul-06-08
PROJECTED PAYOUT: 3,400 (43:1)
Dortmund Rd 7: Pick Three
White-Draw-Black 77

I'm back in the c-bucks again! :^) My Best, - Mal

Annie K.: Heh... I'm glad I had bet on an Ivanchuk-Kramnik perfecta; I have a feeling simply losing that bet is not nearly as frustrating as having a winning longshot ticket and hardly any profit on it. :\
Jul-07-08  Xenon Oxide: <To all the betting champs here>

Do you tend to bet more on longshots or on "sure bets"? Also, do you play differently when you have more money, or when you are ahead in the rankings, as compared to when you are behind? Also, how do you decide the amount you wager on each bet?

Sneaky: I bet more on longshots than sure bets. Biel is a great example. The sure bet is that Carlsen will win. I believe he'll win. I think we all do.

I don't know where the odds will settle but I'm not going to commit my money on Carlsen just yet. If he ends up with odds like 1.25, then I'll say no thanks. It's just not worth risking 2000 to win 500. (And if somebody ties with him you'll earn even less!)

One thing's for sure: NEVER make a giant long term bet on a "sure thing" if you have to take out a loan to do it. The interest will nibble away at your profit and possibly even leave you a loser after you win the bet! Loans are best for short-term maneuvers of luck. Borrow on a Tuesday, double it up, pay back the fatman on Wednesday.

Jul-08-08  Xenon Oxide: Thanks, <Sneaky>!
Jul-08-08  Xenon Oxide: <Chessgames Bookie> Since Carlsen is the clear favorite in Biel, it is entirely possible that he will actually <lose> rating points even if he wins. So could you kindly open a bet: <will Carlsen win or lose rating points in Biel?>

Just an idea.

Sneaky: Biel has 10 rounds, right? Maybe make a bet, "Final score of Carlsen at Biel" starting with 10/10, 9.5/10, all the way down to 0/10.
Jul-09-08  Xenon Oxide: <Chessgames Bookie> Will you provide betting on the individual games of the Poikovsky Tournament? Just something to keep us busy while we're waiting for Biel? Thanks :)

Annie K.: Thanks for the good news Mal. :)

Well, I didn't quite mean to exclude Biel, even though it is technically also a cat.18, but it's more like a cat.19 + Pelletier. ;)

In any case, self unfortunately hasn't been listening... :s

I know Annie! ;) If only we could predict the future! Of course, that wouldn't be any *fun* either! ~lol~ I bet light on the last round of Poikovsky Chess Tournament. In the event that something may happen! Now we wait... <grin> All the Best, - Mal

Jul-18-08  technical draw: Good to see malthrope on top of the leader board (oops! that's taboo in golf and Chessbookie, it brings bad luck and the leader comes tumbling down!!

Of course if all my picks come out I'll have $11,000 chessbucks and lead the pack but Mal is right, just getting into the top ten is OK because in the finals you get cb10,000 instead of 1,000. Good luck to all. All my good buddies are on the leader board and I'm left out? I feel like General Patton!
