Chnebelgrind: <malthrope: 'Germany 1' is best suited to be in medal contention...>

<brankat>s question is reasonable. Germany 2 at least defeated Bulgaria

For me it's a difference. If the germany-ticket counts I will get 775 cb, but 12484 cb, if the OTHER-ticket counts :-)

Chessgames Bookie: <malthrope> In the Olympic overall winner proposition, the Germany ticket will be paid off only if the Germany 1 team wins. In the unlikely event that the Germany 2 or Germany 3 team should upset the field, the 'OTHER' ticket will win.
Nov-14-08  NakoSonorense: Wohoo! This is how you safely make 600 chessbucks:

Yes <ChessBookie> - if you recall I was simply trying to assist my friend <brankat> with his question (Germany 1, 2 or 3?). It's the only logical thing to do! :) <Germany 1 - of course> ;) Nothing more and nothing less...

In retrospect, I did notice however that you took a large sampling from the top 32 teams in their precise start-up ranking order. Only omitting 3 teams from this group (Cuba, Greece & Moldova). Unknown if it was by design or omission. ;) Then adding 13 additional teams from the remaining group ranked #36 (Switzerland) to #68 (Belgium). Finally adding the '1 Other' gives 43 bets in total.

Besides, I didn't even bet on the Dresden Open Tournament winner having bet exclusively on the Women's Tournament winner only! <grin> :^) All the Best, - Mal

PS: Very nice betting sequence there <NakoSonorense> :))

Nov-15-08  brankat: <nakosonorense> <Wohoo! This is how you safely make 600 chessbucks:>

The winning tickets add to some 6,500. Not 600 :-)

Annie K.: <brankat> you have to subtract the investments from the winnings to get the net profit.
Nov-15-08  brankat: Yes, I remembered that later. Although in some tickets it doesn't show the amount wagered.

But then, regardless of 600 profit, I'd call this a bad bet. To bet 2,000 for a possible return of 2,400; another 2,000 to collect 2,112; one hundred for a 128 payout?

<Nako> was extremely fortunate that they all came in. This time around.

But, for his sake, I hope he'll realize that in a bit of a longer run, this kind of an approach is certainly a losing one.

Nov-15-08  technical draw: Well, I climbed up a step from 14th to lucky 13th. Slowly getting there. All I have to do is get to that coveted 10th place.
Nov-15-08  NakoSonorense: <brankat> Ehh, not really. I wasn't lucky at all. You missed the key word: safely. There are many ways of making $600, but there are only a few ways of *safely* making them...

Did you see the names on those tickets? China over Belarus, Russia over Poland, etc. It's more likely that hell freezes over before Belarus or Poland pulls off a draw/win against China and Russia.

So it was a totally safe bet. Lady Luck was not invited to the dance on this occasion. =)

Nov-15-08  malthrope: <NakoSonorense: [...] So it was a totally safe bet. Lady Luck was not invited to the dance on this occasion. =)>

Yes I thought so too <NakoSonorense> - as I said it was a very nice betting sequence. :) If you have the c-bucks to bet with you can considerably add to your winnings. Especially in the early goings of the Chess Olympiad where the projected match score is still somewhat predictable. ;)

Interesting that the Open Section in Rd #3 we had two team upsets. The main one being Norway's victory over China (2½-1½) and to a lessor extant the Netherlands team holding Azerbaijan to a tied match (2-2). Congrats to all that bravely bet on Norway to win ($3,990 c-bucks available for distribution), and to those with faith in the NED team holding AZE to a draw ($4,155 c-bucks available there). :)

We'll have to wait to see what Rd #4 brings forth... Which Olympiad team will be upset next? ~lol~ 'Good Luck' everyone! :^) - Mal

Nov-16-08  technical draw: Well I'm on the leader board but 12th is just as bad as 400th, no 10 grand. So I better be careful now since all I have to do is wait for those that are ahead of me to start dropping like flies (hi, Nako).

(mal) You've gone up a bit. Wait to the end of the olympiads M/F and you'll see major changes on the leader board...TD..."and I'm making my way up to you".....

Nov-16-08  technical draw: Uh, that's Olympiads male/female, just in case some gutter brain read the above...TD
Nov-16-08  brankat: <Malthrope> <Nakosonorense> <Interesting that the Open Section in Rd #3 we had two team upsets. The main one being Norway's victory over China (2½-1½) and to a lessor extant the Netherlands team holding Azerbaijan to a tied match (2-2).>

That's exactly the point! So much for a "safe" bet. It doesn't exist. Here. instead of Norway and the Netherlands it could have easily been Belarus or Poland. Besides, the Russians barely managed to defeat the Poles. And there will be more and more surprises in the coming rounds.

If/when chances have to be taken, then it better be at the appropriate odds.

It's like robbing a bank :-) If You are going to risk 5-10 years, it better be for big time cash, not for small change. The risk is the same, so would be the punishment. But, the difference is in a potential reward.

Good luck to all.

Nov-16-08  malthrope: <TD: (mal) You've gone up a bit. Wait to the end of the olympiads M/F and you'll see major changes on the leader board...TD..."and I'm making my way up to you".....>

Hehehe... Well, at least you're now in direct striking range of the $3-6K Leaderboard group. :) As for me, I haven't yet bet on the Olympiad except for 2 bets for the Women's tourney winner... Although, I had a hunch yesterday about NED and AZE being a tied match but naturally I didn't bet on it! :( Anyway, I'm still dropping deeper into the cellar with my loan balance interest from the Loanshark accrued daily! ~lol~ Good Luck <TD> :^)

<brankat> - I still thought Nako's bet in Rd #2 was relatively safe. :) However, not true in Rd #3! ~lol~ Even I was tempted to place a bet as given above (NED vs AZE - drawn match). As I said earlier, <"Which Olympiad team will be upset next?"> We await the answer to this question with baited breath... <grin> - Mal

Nov-16-08  technical draw: I just lost 10 on a Nickel bet.
Nov-16-08  technical draw: <Chessbookie> Please correct my net worth on the leader board should read 2,934 same as plimko. Unless you're confusing plimko with me...
Nov-16-08  technical draw: I lost a lot of money at Pimlico, I don't want to lose chessbucks to plimko....
Nov-17-08  brankat: <TD> My last visit to Pimlico was in '89. It was a privilege to watch Sunday Silence and Easy Goer. Never saw such a race before or since. Even made a few bucks :-)
Nov-17-08  technical draw: <brankat> That was my money you won. Give it back!
Nov-17-08  technical draw: <chessbookie> Thanks for putting my correct net worth. I was just too quick on the trigger. It takes time to work out all these losers bets, Including mine since I'm now out of the leader board.
Nov-17-08  whiteshark: <chessbookie> Tuesday, 18th November, is a free day at the chess Olympiad in Dresden. Could you therefore extent/prolong the betting time for round 6 bets for another 24 hours? Thanks!
Nov-18-08  malthrope: <whiteshark: <chessbookie> Tuesday, 18th November, is a free day at the chess Olympiad in Dresden. [...]>

<whiteshark> - I'm sure they will catch it! (grant the extension). For the record both Nov 18th and the 24th are rest days. Source the official Olympiad website - Tournament Schedule: http://www.dresden2008.de/site/en/o...

Nov-18-08  technical draw: Darn! I knew it! Don't count sneaky out. Mayday, Mayday, I have sneaky in my rear view mirror! I'm not going to engage him, I'll just let him go past me and see if some other schmuck drops.
Nov-18-08  chessperson13: Hey Chessbookie I wish you gave information before the game like these guys do

http://www.pregame.com/

What if people could give pick information for chess bucks?? Sometimes I really don't know which player to bet on.

Nov-18-08  chessperson13: I cant believe how bad the American team is doing!
