Jan-30-09  percyblakeney: One bad bet (Moro-Carlsen 0-1) and one lucky bet (Radjabov won after a blunder on the 40th from Wang Yue) = a small plus and another all-in round coming up.
Jan-31-09  rogge: One good bet today, 23:1 for Carlsen to play 1.c4 :)

Payout 4000, nice!

Sneaky: I am not surprised to see I won this longshot, but I can't believe I got such good odds for this bet:

< Corus A: Rd 13: Morozevich vs Ivanchuk : Morozevich [cash in ticket] 500 YOU WIN! COLLECT 3833 13:2 7.67 3,833 >

There are two rules of betting on Ivanchuk:

1. Ivanchuk can beat anybody.
2. Anybody can beat Ivanchuk.

Feb-02-09  kspiteri: <Sneaky> You forgot to mention the two similar rules of betting on Morozevich.
Feb-02-09  malthrope: <kspiteri: <Sneaky> You forgot to mention the two similar rules of betting on Morozevich.>

Indeed <kspiteri> so true! ~lol~ ;)

Feb-02-09  MrMelad: Corus conclusions:

200 (chess)$ on Karjakin at the start of corus = 12500 $ at the end! Without that bet I am down 2000 $.. I was better off not betting on the games at all :)

Corus was so unpredictable this year! I am actually glad this was the case, because the games were very interesting. Morozevich was the most entertaining player, only 5 draws in this competition, second was Karjakin with 6 draws and a great performance (the pinnacle - he got one over Magnus when he won the last round when Carlsen lost) and Movsesian was the most surprising with a plus score and some very good games. Chucky was Chucky, maybe he should lay off the drugs for a while, and Van-Wely also surprised me, I excpected him to go -5 in this strong field. Carlsen did exactly as I anticipated except for the last round loss to Yue.

I think Carlsen's decision not to be trained by Kasparov a while ago came back to hunt him in this tournament - also I think his father's involvement is starting to hurt him more then help him, he should grow up mentally and take care of himself, otherwise he will always be "the boy".

Feb-04-09  percyblakeney: Linares is coming up soon, I remember doubting the wisdom behind paddypower's odds for Corus since they meant that Karjakin had better winning chances than Radjabov. Not such a bad idea after all. Odds for Linares (fractional):

Anand 7-4
Carlsen 12-5
Aronian 4-1
Ivanchuk 7-1
Radjabov 8-1
Wang Yue 14-1
Grischuk 15-1
Dominguez 33-1

Feb-07-09  technical draw: C'mon chessgames bring on some bets. I'm smoldering in 8th place and can't move up without action. Next series nothing but heavy, heavy bets.(From the movie "Let's do it again" with Sydney Poitier).
Feb-08-09  whiteshark: <bookie> in the upcoming match <Gata Kamsky vs Veselin Topalov> in Sofia it is a secret who is/are Kamsky's second/s.

Is it possible to create a bet with, say FIDE's TOP-50 GMs as possible candidates?

(closing time: begin of the match)

Feb-08-09  DCP23: <whiteshark: <bookie> in the upcoming match <Gata Kamsky vs Veselin Topalov> in Sofia it is a secret who is/are Kamsky's second/s.>

It's not a secret, his main second is Emil Sutovsky.

Feb-08-09  whiteshark: Hello <DCP23> I read the following in a recent Danailov-interview at http://interviews.chessdom.com/topa...

Q: You [Danailov] were in Wijk Aan Zee, which has just finished. How do you evaluate Kamsky's performance?

A: He was alone. He was hiding. He did not have any team. It was obvious he did not care and plays just to fulfill his contract. His thoughts are directed to the match with Vesko. <His team is hidden and working. <Nobody knows who is it and where it stays. >>

Thereafter he said s.th. about Sutovsky:

Q: In such matches there is a silent game between the managers as well. Tell us something about Emil Sutovsky?

A: He is not his manager, he is his speaker. At first the negotiations were with the wife of his father who is an advocate. Later on with Chernenko, with his father, and in the end appeared Sutovsky. To be a manager you have to have at least one contract in your life, and to have found at least one sponsor. Actually, Kamsky does not have a manager, he decides alone. He temporarily uses some people to help him.

==

Well that sounded not that clear to me, so that I suggested the a.m. bet. But I always appreciated/trusted your information. Maybe it's just to unconventional/not-game-related for a bet... :D

Feb-08-09  DCP23: Hello <whiteshark>, and thanks for the kind words.

Of course Kamsky's team for the match may and most probably will include some other people which we do not know yet, but his 'best man' is definitely Sutovsky. Kamsky owes him his recent improvement in opening knowledge.

Feb-11-09  technical draw: Great. I lose money but jump from 8th to 7th. If I keep on losing I'll be in first place in no time.
Feb-13-09  wolfmaster: <Chessgames Bookie> Just a suggestion for a betting event: How about you have an event where Chessgames members predict how long the match will last (5 games, 6 games, 7 games, 8 games, more than 8 games)?

SwitchingQuylthulg: What happens if the match ends 5-2 or 5-3? Not possible to wager on those.
Feb-14-09  brankat: No :-)
Feb-14-09  malthrope: <brankat: <SwitchingQuylthulg: What happens if the match ends 5-2 or 5-3? Not possible to wager on those.> No :-)>

~lol~ I'm with <Switch> on this one! ;) All 5-2 and 5-3 scores (for either Topalov or Kamsky winning) are both theoretical possibilities. Only 5-4 (either winner) is not possible in the first 8 games in classical portion of the match. Here are the selected tiebreak rules if the match ends up in a 4-4 tie:

3.6 Conditions of victory

3.6.1 The match shall be played over eight (8) games and the winner of the match shall be the first player to score 4.5 points or more. A tie shall be broken according to article 3.7 below. If the winner scores 4.5 points in less then 8 games then the organizers can re-schedule the Closing Ceremony for an earlier date.

3.7 Tie-breaks

3.7.1 If the scores are level after the regular eight (8) games, after a new drawing of colors, four (4) tie-break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes on the clock for each player with an addition of 10 seconds after each move.

3.7.2 If the scores are level after the games in paragraph 3. 7. 1, then, after a new drawing of colors, two (2) five-minute games shall be played with the addition of 10 seconds after each move.

3.7.3 If the score is still level, the players shall play a single decisive sudden death game. The player, who wins the drawing of lots, may choose the color. White shall receive 6 minutes, black shall receive 5 minutes, without any addition. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces is declared as winner.

Schedule (if tiebreaks are needed):

Day 12 - Game 8
Day 13 - Restday (Closing Ceremony)
Day 14 - Tie Breaks (Closing Ceremony)

That should do it! :^) - Mal

PS: For the purist: 3.6.2 If any player refuses to participate in the Challenge’s Match, the other player qualifies for the World Championship Match 2009.

Chessgames Bookie: We mistakingly left out the 5-2 and 5-3 possible results. If the match should end with that score, all tickets will be refunded.
Feb-19-09  DCP23: Attention <Chessgames Bookie>!

The pairing have changed to:

Anand - Radjabov
Aronian - Carlsen
Dominguez - Grischuk
Wang Yue - Ivanchuk

Feb-19-09  technical draw: Yes, the pairings have been changed. Um, that counts as a win for the bettors , right?
