Sneaky: When CG first came out with the ChessBookie game I predicted a huge flop, because chessplayers are an unusual ilk. Some of them seem to have disdain for all games, except for their precious and perfect chess. Others, like myself, enjoy all manner of game, but have a special dislike for games which employ too much luck and not enough skill.

And to me, this "Bookie" game looked largely like a game of luck. After all, who can really predict the outcome of chess games?

Yet Switchy-Q has nailed the coffin shut on any argument that the ChessBookie game is anything but a game of a skill. His success here is downright scary.

Oct-17-09  AnotherBike: <chessbookie>Question about the Unive winner bet: What about shared winners? I cannot find any tiebreak winner on the official site, so maybe there is not?!

How is the payout of this bet going to be? Only winner, or shared first places all share chessbucks?

eternaloptimist: <technical draw <eternaloptimist> You're right. I don't want to know how he wins I would just like to know how to pronounce his name!> LOL!! Actually, I would like to know how he wins, but I can't see him sharing his secrets about that unfortunately.

Chessgames Bookie: <AnotherBike> All tickets on players tied for first after regularly scheduled play will be considered winners.
Oct-19-09  technical draw: I tried tricking the loan shark. Where it says repay: loan amount, I put in -200. Here's his reply:

<Look buddy boy, just type in a normal number. You know, the kind with digits from 0 to 9. Sheesh>

He's not as dumb as he looks.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <European Team Championship: Rd 1: England vs Monaco>

The odds for an English victory are about 1.0045, or 1:223 in fractional. (Meaning any wager on England to win smaller than 223 chessbucks will gain zero chessbucks even in case of success and was therefore entirely pointless.) Is this a new ChessBookie record?

It's easy to argue against including events quite this lopsided: players with a betting limit of 200 bucks were effectively left out of the game, unless willing to bet on a tie or Monaco winning.

SwitchingQuylthulg: Could it even be that the ChessBookie calculator can't handle odds that lopsided? I'm pretty sure I won one chessbuck more than I should have... Not that I'm complaining about that, but if this isn't just me screwing up my calculations with a sleepy head having just woken up (or some other equally implausible explanation) do I get a special prize for finding a bug in the game's fourth year of smooth running?

Chessgames Bookie: <All> There was a bit of a mix-up in Unive Crown Group: Rd 6: Daily Double . I paid off the "Draw-Draw" wager by accident (the games don't take place until tomorrow). Then I somehow paid off Unive Crown Group: Winner as a Tiviakov win, which isn't right, since it isn't over yet and there is no clinch.

Fortunately we have a routine procedure to correct accidental payoffs. The procedure is rather complicated, but in short, we try to restore things to normalcy as as fairly as possible.

If you had a ticket for either of these events you should still have it, and everything will be paid off tomorrow as scheduled.

However, if you made some action (namely 1 - cashed in a winning ticket, or 2 - threw away a losing ticket) then your action must be reversed. Reversing a discarded ticket means that you will suddenly see an active ticket magically appear in your list again. That's always pleasant!

Reversing a cashed-in ticket is usually a more heart-wrenching affair. It involves taking chessbucks away from you and even invoking a loan if necessary. (Luckily I don't think that happened to anybody in this case.)

Anyhow, it took a few minutes but things are back to normal, and GOOD LUCK!

WannaBe: Does that mean you have to break your own knees with a baseball bat??
Oct-24-09  MrMelad: I don't like it bookie, something smells bad, how come your message was written on Oct-24-09 and WannaBe's on Oct-23-09 but posted after you? First this and now that, I'm starting to think the bookie ain't got the cash if you know what I mean...

Sneaky: SwitchyQ — I rather like the lopsided odds. It gives me a glimmer of a hope to still win the season ... all I need is for Luxembourg to win the Olympiad.

WannaBe: <Sneaky> That is like betting on the Oakland Laimers to win the 2010 Super Bowl...
Oct-28-09  Qb6: Oh great. I've got 0 chessbucks right now.

Chessgames Bookie: <MrMelad> Nothing sinister there, a correction had to be made to my post and this was done after WannaBe had replied to it, thus the date anomaly.
Oct-29-09  MrMelad: <Chessgames Bookie> And I thought you broke WannaBe's knees... Ok, no harm done I will let it slide this time, but next time, bookie, watch yourself. You mess with WannaBe you mess with us, got it?
Oct-29-09  dakgootje: Don't mess with the brain behind the most... creative opening ever!
Nov-05-09  technical draw: I hate draws!
Nov-05-09  NakoSonorense: Standings:

286. technical draw -1,346
287. NakoSonorense -1,348

Get away from me!

I liked draws this round. I now have a little over 500 chessbucks for betting, plus 150 I can get from Shylock. With all this, I can finally start recovering and make it to the leaderboard!

Nov-05-09  technical draw: <NakoSonorense>

"Perro hambriento soñado con filete"

"Hungry dog dreaming about steaks"

You will pass me only if these "great" players keep making draws. I never bet on draws.

Sneaky: <Look here, Sneaky, I've already given you a loan today. Why don't you come back tomorrow and stop wasting my time? Now get out of here!> I think you're right TD ... the fatman is smarter than he looks.

Sneaky: Speaking of fatmen, I'm putting 200 c$ on Svidler to win tomorrow! With Black! Against Kramnik !!!

It sounds unlikely, I know ... but at least I'm not rooting for Team Luxembourg.

Sneaky: I'm third from the top

<<
312. Sneaky -3,751
313. Robin01 -3,834
314. Winter -4,398
>
>

...if you stand on your head. If those two make a few smart bets I'll be the cellar king. The sad thing is that I'm really trying to win.

Nov-07-09  technical draw: Well I owe the fatman 3,501 cb's. If you see players drawing you see TD losing.
Nov-08-09  dakgootje: hehehe went +4 -10 with bets for today... for a profit of 188 chessbucks :D

And noooo, I didn't take the safe road by betting on draws; only one of them on Anand - Pono since I was laying the latter and thus was more or less forced to take the draw as well :P

Could be the first time I'm over 3k in chessbucks...
