May-02-06  acirce: I've got chessbucks on Timman and Fedorov, they both seem unlikely to win at the moment. On the other hand I want Stellwagen to win the whole tournament for the same reason so from that perspective it's great.
May-02-06  percyblakeney: I don't understand what Timman is doing, but that's just how it should be.
May-02-06  percyblakeney: Timman does have some nice things involving Re6 and all kinds of threats, I don't think he'll lose this after all.
May-02-06  TIMER: I don't understand why Federov allowed Stallwagen the typical Qd2, Bh6 h4-h5 attack without good counterplay right from the start.
May-02-06  TIMER: Now it is getting dangerous for Cicak.
May-02-06  percyblakeney: Timman knew what he was doing after all...
May-02-06  TIMER: I think it will soon peter out to a draw with accurate play though.
May-02-06  percyblakeney: Agreed, 42. Bb2 looks like a pretty safe move for white.
May-02-06  TIMER: I lost nearly 600 on the other game ( I risked more than half my networth in total this round!) so with Timman's likely draw I will only gain about 300. I could have been anywhere from 2000 to 6000 with my bets this round! This would be my third best of 6 possibilities.
May-02-06  percyblakeney: Is it really possible that Cicak after thinking for 40 minutes in a slightly better position plays something like 44. Rgg2??
May-02-06  TIMER: Maybe I spoke too soon, Cicak seems to be cracking under the pressure, Qd8+ or Bg7 followed by Qd8+ all forced a draw. But Rgg2 seems to lose to Rh6+ Kg1 Qe4 with a strong attack.
May-02-06  percyblakeney: Rgg2 is an amazingly losing move that not even I would have considered playing...
May-02-06  TIMER: That move cost me over 900 chessbucks, meaning a loss of 600 instead (what I lost on the other bet). I don't think that Timman will return the favour.
May-02-06  TIMER: 46...Rh1 and over
May-02-06  percyblakeney: What on earth did he think he could accomplish with Rgg2... I wonder what possible answers from Timman he looked at during all those minutes that didn't win quickly for black.
May-02-06  TIMER: Rgg2 instinctively looks like a losing move, without any calculation it would be very surprising if it was fine. All Timman's three moves afterwards you could play in a blitz, Rh6+, Qe4, Rh1 and mate, it is very straightforward.
May-02-06  percyblakeney: The crucial position in Cicak-Timman. 44. Qd8+ or Bxg7 results in a pawn up endgame for white that should be drawn. After calculating for a long while Cicak plays Rgg2:

May-02-06  DutchDunce: Stellwagen has won. DutchDunce has lost. Negative net worth, here we come....
May-02-06  notsodeepthought: Stellwagen has won? He did? FINALLY, I've actually placed a winning bet. Woohoo. Time for the down payment on that condo (well, almost - I'm still down a few hundred chessbucks. Good thing it's only <chess>bucks).
May-03-06  iron maiden: Stellwagen is doing very well indeed; kind of makes me wish I'd put more than 20 chessbucks on him to win the tournament. Of course he still has to get past Timman.

Chessgames Bookie: We also went ahead and entered this game a day early, since there's bound to be great interest in it:

Sigeman & Co: Rd7: Stellwagen vs Timman

May-03-06  percyblakeney: Hmm, Timman has won four of five games against Hector in this database...

cu8sfan: <percyblakeney> How much dough have you made by betting on one player and then praising the odds and the abilities of the other, thus driving up your own odds? (-:
May-03-06  percyblakeney: Not enough, since I have the tendency to begin believing my own arguments :-)
