Aug-06-14  ChessWriter: When does the summer leg end?

Penguincw: BTW: For Round 6, would it be possible to have game by game bets (not sure where the pairings are though)?

Chessgames Bookie: <ChessWriter> Exactly when the Summer Leg will end has not been decided yet, but it will be in late September or early October. This means the mid-leg Pay Day will be here soon (those who missed the original announcement about the Pay Day experiment can find it at Chessgames Bookie chessforum).

<Penguincw> If the rest day means round 6 board pairings are announced more in advance than normally then I will consider it. I feel uneasy about having bets open for only a few hours; ideally, people from all time zones should be able to bet on everything without having to wake up at an unseemly hour. Obviously we have already seen a major exception to this earlier this leg, namely the Dortmund in-play bets, but those were different; perhaps we could have in-play action for the Olympiad, but I'd like to announce it in advance.

Aug-06-14  centralfiles: Current standings handicap special
<Russia
United States +1.4
Norway 1 +3.8
Vietnam +4.2
Philippines +5.6>

Philippines 12.6
Vietnam 12.2
Norway 10.8
U.S. 8.4
Russia 8

Looks like Russia is the long shot here.

Aug-06-14  centralfiles: Then again as were only halfway through we should count only half the handicap which leaves us

Vietnam 10.1
Philippines 9.8
Norway 8.9
Russia 8.0
U.S. 7.7

Aug-06-14  MarkFinan: Am I the only person who's having trouble with these new wagers?? Unless you're a professional gambler of course ,lol. Seriously, I know there's been changes and even though *somehow* I'm doing better and getting lucky (apart from today, let's not mention today :-)) I'm a little confused! ✌
Aug-06-14  Kinghunt: Could we get a Bookie bet going sometime in the next week or so for whether Kasparov or Ilyumzhinov will win the FIDE presidential election? Thanks!

Sneaky: <Mark> I feel ya. I am slightly familiar with the "point spread" that you see in American football but I hate to approach bets like that. When you give the Vietnamese team an extra 1.5 points who knows who to bet on anymore?

That's not to say CG Bookie should discontinue the practice. I see lots of people betting on it so it must be popular. Dumbbells like us can just bet on the easier to understand bets.

I would like to see some over/under bets. Those were always fun.

Sneaky: Is it just me or does the Olympiad: HYPNOTOAD SPECIAL special have totally nuts odds? If I understand the bet right, "YES" will pay if Carlsen wins just one game over 64 moves. He's famous for grounding down opponents in the ending. It seems to me that he'll be paired with some weaker but stubborn player who will clamp down and try to last as long as he can against the World Champion. Or maybe a position will be dead even but Carlsen will outlast the poor guy with his youthful stamina and provoke a mistake. I have 500 bucks riding on "YES".

On the other hand, I don't think I'll win by seeing Magnus come back from a -1.00 Houdini deficit, not because he can't fight back from bad positions, but simply because he tends not to get in such positions. ;-)

I agree with the essence of your post, but minor point of clarification: it only needs to be a -1.00 Stockfish evaluation, which is roughly a -0.60 Houdini evaluation, which is actually reasonably common in Carlsen games.

Excellent idea. Up now: Ilyumzhinov vs Kasparov: WINNER

Good luck! Please do not bribe anybody to make sure your bet wins.

Aug-07-14  dakgootje: Unless you bet on Kasparov.

That's the one that confused me too. Why are teams getting a hypothetical 1.5 points?

Aug-07-14  technical draw: Those "daily triple" propositions are a bit confusing. Maybe I'll just play the longshots and hope for the best (or worse).

WannaBe: <technical draw> Man, that's like hitting a football card in Vegas, with all those +0.5, -1s...
Aug-07-14  Kinghunt: <Excellent idea. Up now: Ilyumzhinov vs Kasparov: WINNER>

Thanks!

<That's the one that confused me too. Why are teams getting a hypothetical 1.5 points?>

The idea is to make the different options all (roughly) equally likely, so to bet on the Phillipines, you don't have to hope for that 1 in a million chance they actually take first. It's much the same as a golf handicap.

I, for one, enjoy this new approach to bets. Keep it up!

Aug-07-14  centralfiles: <sneaky>
Your Right yes has great odds, and im one of those mathematically challenged people who put chessbucks on no. I simply misunderstood the bet, i thought it had to satisfy BOTH conditions :-(
Aug-07-14  centralfiles: maybe ill still get lucky and get a share of sneaky's chessbucks

  Chessgames Bookie: ♔ ANNOUNCEMENT ♔

The first ever ChessBookie Pay Day will be on Friday, August 15, the day after the Olympiad ends. On that date, all active players (players who have made at least one bet this leg that wasn't refunded) will receive a free 1,000 chessbucks! Players who join the leg after the Pay Day will not receive this bonus, so if you haven't made any bets this leg yet, now would be the perfect time to do so.

For those who're already actively playing, this could be a good time to bet more aggressively and take more risks; after all, even if everything goes wahoonie-shaped, the extra c$1,000 will help you get back on your feet. And if you don't have the money to do that with, and even the Loanshark won't help you, don't get discouraged - that will all change next Friday.

Penguincw: Firstly, thanks for the live betting. :)

Now about that pay day. Is the $1,000 an increase in funds and net worth, or just funds?

Both your funds and your net worth will go up by c$1,000.

Since net worth = funds + active bets - loan, a "bonus" of c$1,000 that increased your funds but not your net worth would actually be simply a c$1,000 loan, and it'd only be worth advertising because many players would want to pay it back immediately :)

Sneaky: It's tempting to risk the farm on Ilyumzhinov vs Kasparov: WINNER. I think it's pretty obvious who's going to win. That's all I have to say about that.
Aug-09-14  technical draw: <Sneaky> atop the leader board. Good to see that.
