I'm back. Went 5/5 today. :)

Would be over 2000 if not for this ticket (which I still haven't cashed in).

FIDE Grand Prix Baku 2014 Round 6: "Console The Losers" SPECIAL : Svidler [cash in ticket] 3 YOU WIN! COLLECT 5 7:2 4.61 5 Oct-08-14

Good thing I no longer bet on events that could have multiple payoffs. :)

chessgames.com: <Kynas> My mistake; it's fixed now. The leaderboard is also recomputed.
Nov-02-14  TIMER: Dear Chessgames.com,

I am afraid to say it is not quite fixed yet as you double counted my wrong 534 winning on the draw and I should have been on 14516 instead of either 15,050 or 13,982. I am sure of this.

Many Thanks, TIMER.

  chessgames.com: Here's exactly what happened:

I was told by wordfunph (who hadn't previously made a single error all leg, by the way) that there had been an incorrect payoff on Jako-Caruana.

No problem! I have a utility "undo_payoff" which took all of the money away from people who bet on the draw, returns any tickets for that bet which were discarded, and then makes the bet payable again.

Then I went to pay the bet again -- but like a dope, I paid it off as a draw for a second time. (In my defense, that's still what our site had as the game result.)

When this was pointed out, I went back to undo_payoff once more, and again everybody who cashed in a draw-ticket had their funds removed, and people who tossed winning tickets saw the tickets magically reappear.

The second time around, I paid it off correctly (0-1). In principle nothing should be different than if it was done right in the first place.

What do you mean when you say <you double counted my wrong 534 winning>. If you mean to say that you received a winning ticket for 534 on the 1/2-1/2 result and cashed it in twice, that's entirely possible, but undo_payoff also removes that money from your account. (Or at least it's supposed to. The software was tested years ago and this is the first we've heard of a discrepancy.)

Are you sure the bottom line is not what it's supposed to be? Things got very confusing during that transaction so it would be understandable if this is just a misunderstanding. On the other hand if there is a problem we need to figure out what happened.

  chessgames.com: Follow up:

Careful analysis of the situation revealed that there is a type of bug in undo_payoff. It really isn't equipped to perform its action more than one time.

When the time comes to decide who to "penalize" for cashing in a winning ticket, it just examines the logfiles. (It's not really a penalty, since they already received the chessbucks, but they must be given back.)

But in this case we ran it twice, so people got penalized twice, even if they didn't cash in their ticket twice. In the case of TIMER and about a 15 others, he cashed in his ticket one time but because the software was run twice he got penalized twice.

Good news is, that I have all of the data required to restore things back to normal.

Thank you two very much for pointing this out, and also let me say that I take full blame for this. Wordfunph made a run-of-the-mill error, the kind I used to make 10 times a leg, but it was me who really botched things up. I shall make amends.

chessgames.com: There weren't as many affected accounts as I thought at first.

We're going to make an exception to our normal policy of bettor-confidentially to expeditiously address this matter. The following members just received a silent account credit due to being double-charged during the previous confusion:

<fm avari viraf> <greed and death> <bubuli55> <moulicules> <Nightranger> <Touch of Knight> <wallytherhino> <TIMER> <Penguincw>

Note that many people had bets on the draw for this game which are not listed above, because they did not cash in their ticket prior to the correction. So if you bet on the draw and don't see your name above, don't panic, your account is just fine. Your bet lost and you're out the dough, just like it should be.

The user <Imran Iskandar> was a unique case: he was also double-charged by the software, but our records show that he in fact actually cashed in the draw-ticket two times, so his account should be correct and will not be credited.

I will not list the amount of chessbucks involved for reasons of game confidentiality, but it is exactly equal to the amount of money you had on the draw bet for Jako-Caruana. If you would like me to clarify further, email me at chess@chessgames.com and I'll explain exactly what was added to your account.

Leaderboards are being recomputed now. Again I thank you for your patience and for pointing out this problem and good luck with the second half of the Fall Season!

Sneaky: I looked at my account and thought "woo hoo! I must have hit the pick three!" Nooooo, it's just payday. I still feel like a winner :)

Also: I noticed my betting limit just jumped from 200 to 500. Is that normal? Did everybody's do that on payday?

Yes, it's normal. Your maximum bet depends on your net worth (and to a lesser extent, your credit rating), and your net worth just went up significantly.

It did not happen to everybody; only players who were within c$1,000 of reaching the next step. For instance, many players were so deep in the cellar that even the extra c$1,000 couldn't lift them up enough, and at the other end of the table <TIMER>'s betting cap had already maxed out.

Sneaky: I remember the days when I had a good credit score. You'd let me put down 10 grand on a single bet, if I had the stomach for it. Even the loanshark was on the ready to front me 5-digit figures. They comped me hotels rooms, drinks, and dinners. I was a magnet to the ladies. Life was beautiful.

Now I wander the neon lit streets in shabby clothes, begging for handouts so I can buy another dream on the pick-three. O, how the mighty have fallen.

Nov-04-14  Touch of Knight: <How many "Bishop Takes Knight" moves will be played in round 2?>

Interesting bet. I tried to figure out how many such moves are possible in one game, theoretically. The answer is 20. Right?

Nov-04-14  whiteshark: <To♘> With four games per round I'd say <16>, (without counting any promotions).
Nov-04-14  dakgootje: <Interesting bet. I tried to figure out how many such moves are possible in one game, theoretically. The answer is 20. Right?>

I thought it'd be less, because opposing pawns block each other to the promotion square.

But each capture of a piece can free 2 pawns. So 8 captures are necessary. Given that both sides can give up 4 pieces [RRQB], that's 8 pieces, so yes - 20 should <just> be possible. I think.

WannaBe: <Bookie> Will there be any Carlsen/Anand game by game bet? Or just the two currently offered?

Possibly a pick-3? Pick the results of the first 3 games? e.g. D/D/C or C/D/A =))

Or how about correctly pick 3 elements of the game (ex. result, # of moves and opening correct)? :)
