Feb-01-07  iron maiden: Wow, I hadn't even realized Akopian was part of the "Other" ticket. That's certainly good for me...
Feb-01-07  DCP23: Rather strange decision by ChessBookie to include a 2700 player into the 'Other' category...
Feb-01-07  RonB52734: <DCP23: Rather strange decision by ChessBookie to include a 2700 player into the 'Other' category...> Indeed.

There are some comments on his page, Vladimir Akopian, that indicate he may have been somewhat inactive for a while, although the database seems to have plenty of 2006 games for him.

Frankly, when I first saw that Akopian had won, I was confusing him with Varuzhan Akobian, a 2600+ player who also played at Gibraltar and also would have been on the "Other" ticket.

Feb-01-07  RonB52734: Correction: AkoBian is listed here http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.c... as though he were registered for the tournament, but it seems he did not play.
Feb-02-07  barbababa: The official site has probably mixed Vladimir Akopian to Varuzhan Akobian. In the players list http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.c... they mention Varuzhan Akobian, who did not play in Gibtelecom Masters, but do not list Vladimir Akopian, who played and won the tournament.
Feb-02-07  RonB52734: <barbababa> You're quite right. Akopian isn't listed there.
Feb-05-07  RonB52734: I'm a little surprised that the Bookie hasn't paid off on Gibraltar yet. I wonder if it has to do with the Akopian/Akobian confusion?
Feb-05-07  brankat: I've been wondering about the same thing. Can hardly wait to Discard my tickets :-)
Feb-14-07  Whitehat1963: Proposal for a betting line: Who will play the fewest moves during Linares this year? It's almost pure luck to win this bet. But if I had to lay odds, I might bet on Leko or Carlsen.

tpstar: Q: Who will play the fewest moves during Linares this year?

A: Kramnik.

Where do I collect? ;-)

Feb-14-07  Whitehat1963: Ha ha! Good one!

Chessgames Bookie: It sounds like fun, we decided to add that bet, as well as its counterpart "most moves"

Linares-Morelia: Fewest Moves

Linares-Morelia: Most Moves

NOTE: In the event that a player drops out, misses a round, or for any reason is unable to complete all rounds in a normal fashion, they will be excluded from both bets, and all tickets on that player will be refunded. Forfeiting a single game is enough to disqualify a player due to this clause.

Good luck!

Feb-14-07  Whitehat1963: <Chessgames Bookie> I'd imagine it would also be fun (and perhaps easy) to bet on the longest and shortest game in each round. Sometimes it will be a no-brainer like, say, Kramnik-Leko in the last round of a tournament that neither can win will be over in about 12 moves, while Topalov-Anand in the last round when winner takes all might last 70 moves or more. But in the early rounds, it's mostly a crapshoot, that is, unless Kramnik or Leko is playing black! ;-)
Feb-14-07  Whitehat1963: <Chessgames Bookie> Or you could allow people to bet on a range of moves for certain games. For instance:

Round X (Topalov-Anand) will last:

1. Fewer than 25 moves
2. 25-30
3. 30-35
4. 35-40
5. 40-45
6. 45-50
7. 50-55
8. 55-60
9. 60-80 moves
10. More than 80 moves

That could be interesting as well.

Feb-16-07  brankat: Apparently Radjabov has withdrawn from Linares-M. What hapens with the bets involving Radjabov? The betting cut-off time is in a few hours.
Feb-16-07  malthrope: <brankat: Apparently Radjabov has withdrawn from Linares-M. What hapens with the bets involving Radjabov? The betting cut-off time is in a few hours.>

Just for info sake...

LATE BREAKING NEWS – GM Teimour Radjabov has pulled out of this event and being replaced by Chuky (GM Vassily Ivanchuk) who was on the scene getting ready to give similes in Morelia. See Mig's DD "iLadron!" (Feb 16 '07) // http://www.chessninja.com/dailydirt... Also see 'ChessBase' - "Teimour Radjabov withdraws from Morelia-Linares" (02.16.2007) // http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... Also covered here... // Ajedrez - Ciudad De Morelia // http://www.ajedrezmorelialinares.or...

The long and short of it - Radja's father's hotel room was burgled. Read all the details (plus Teimour's press release) on the above websites... A real shame for Radjabov fans. :-( - Mal

Feb-16-07  strifeknot: Play doesn't start until Saturday, so I suggest scrapping all bets and starting over with Ivanchuk replacing Radjabov as a wagering option, with betting closing Saturday morning. It's unfortunate to have to start from scratch, but Radjabov's withdrawal is certainly a major event that will affect the odds and would alter people's betting strategies.

We still have a full day to redo our wagers. Not ideal, but it's something.

Feb-16-07  refutor: i guess i lose the "radjabov - most moves" bet ;)

Chessgames Bookie: All Radjabov tickets have been refunded.
Feb-16-07  Bob726: What happens if Ivanchuck wins? Then what?
Feb-16-07  Bob726: Would all tickets get refunded or would everyone lose
Feb-16-07  strifeknot: Refunding the tickets would be more reasonable, since Ivanchuk's particiption wasn't taken into consideration at the time the wagers were made. Penalizing everyone in the event on an Ivanchuk win would be pretty unfair.

WannaBe: I don't care if there ain't no nothing pairing for betting in the first round.

♔ Handi-Capper's Corner ♔

Round 1:

Ivanchuk vs. Leko: Leko have a +8 -4 =15 lead over Vassily, when Ivanchuk have white, he is +3 -4 =7 against Peter Leko. However, this does include Amber's rapid and Blindfold play.

Topalov vs. Anand: You don't know the records of these two going head to head? Where have you been? Result of this game will be a draw.

Svidler vs Aronian: Aronian have a slim lead of +3 -2 =6 against Svidler. When Svidler have white pieces, he is +0 -1 (Amber Rapid) =3 against Aronian.

Carlsen vs Morozevich: I personally think this will be the most interesting game, if not, the only decisive game of the first round, Carlsen is +2 -0 =1 against Alexander. When Magnus have white (once) he won in 2006 Biel. Carlsen vs Morozevich, 2006
