Sep-20-07  malthrope: Good News - Bad News

I'll cut right to the chase... Bad News - the pairings are still all screwed up on the official WCC website... :-((( Good News - Rybka is still holding strong and pays 10 c-bucks for 10 c-bucks against Zappa! ~lol~

I'm hoping a move is finally made today in the GMT game so we all have some additional c-bucks to play with. :-) Additional note - the next 'rest day' occurs after Round #8 (not after today's Round #7). This should keep the tension 'high' this round even though it marks the official half-way point of the tourney. As if the WCC tournament tension wasn't 'intense' enough! ;-)

Sep-20-07  technical draw: Again I have bet the max on all propositions and I hope it doesn't get messed up like yesterday. Again I have to wait to see all the money roll in (or roll out)....(I sound like Otis Redding!)
Sep-20-07  malthrope: Rolling.... Rolling...

R-O-L-L-I-N-G like a river... ;-)

Sep-20-07  technical draw: Did CCR cover that from Otis?
Sep-20-07  technical draw: I was thinking more in the line from "Sitting on the Dock of The Bay"

"Watching the tide roll in, I be watching it roll out again."

Sep-20-07  malthrope: I must have had CCR on my mind... They are both great in any case! ;-)
Sep-20-07  Benzol: <technical draw> Proud Mary is a CCR original. Heard It Through The Grape Vine was a cover IIRC.

BTW is anyone familiar with the Ohio band Over The Rhine. I heard a track of theirs the other day which was interesting but sounded like a novelty song. It was called 'Don't Wait For Tom' from the album 'The Trumpet Child'. Very quirky and delightfully irritating.

Sep-20-07  technical draw: I've always preferred Marvin Gaye's version of "I heard it through the Grapevine" Of, course "Proud Mary" is an original CCR ( I know , it helped my in my years in Southeast Asia (1969-1972)

Round 8: Friday

Svidler-Kramnik: Svidler have a record of +2 -9 =15 against Kramnik. With white, Svidler is +2 -1 =9 against Kramnik. In their round 1 meeting, it was a draw after 23 moves.

Gelfand-Anand: Gelfand have a record of +6 -6 =24 against Anand. With white, Gelfand is +6 (none came after 1993) -1 (1993) =13 against Anand. Their earlier game, was a draw after 22 moves.

Leko-Grischuk: Leko have a record of +2 -0 =10 overall when facing Grischuk. With white, Leko is +2 -0 =4 against Grischuk. Their earlier game was a draw after 26 moves.

Sneaky: Looking at the Zappa-Rybka game, I wonder if the Chess Bookie ever considered using "points" like they do in football betting. E.g., suppose we start Zappa with a free 1.5 points in its match against Rybka. Therefore if Rybka wins 6 to 4, for purposes of our bet we would say that Zappa wins 6.5 to 6 and pay off the Zappa bettors. That might make it more of an even-money proposition.

Also I'd like to say that the quality of betting has gone up recently. I am looking around for "bargains" and I can't find any--not even in the pick three!! This game is becoming more challenging as the quality of the players goes up.

Now will Anand-Grischuk be a sicilian? That's the question. It sure takes some chutzpah to play Sicilian against Vishy, and we haven't seen a sicilian in the entire tournament, and Vishy is booked to the gills for the sicilian anyhow. And yet, historically they have played a lot of sicilians together. It's a really tough question.

Sep-20-07  percyblakeney: My bets today: 1000 on Kramnik winning, over 2.50 is a good odds and I really believe in this one. Then just over 100 on some pick three combination that I don't believe in at all.
Sep-20-07  percyblakeney: Well, you can't win them all, and it wasn't my worst bet this far. :-)

WannaBe: Taking a big risk here, picking Anand over Gelfand, think Anand will try to distance himself from the rest...

GO ANAND!!!! Don't disappoint me!

Sep-20-07  malthrope: Congrats to <TIMER> and <Buriag> - a job well done! ;-)

If I may rant just a bit CG Bookie (I'll try to keep this short) considering the major nightmare in the official WCC chess tournament pairings which occurred just 20 minutes before game time yesterday. Hopefully you've also looked at some of the other Forums worldwide. We are all in shock that this was screwed up so bad 'pairing' wise. In the case here you put up the first new bet an 'Opening Choice' for Gris in his game with Anand just after you began the massive cancellation of all bets from Round #6 and some games also from Round #7. To me (us) looking at the clock quickly ticking away decided to start typing very fast. As I'd spent over an hour and half the night before working out my entire betting strategy and spending all of my c-bucks. It also took at least 5 minutes collecting all my 30 plus singular ticket bets to have any c-bucks to even begin to bet with.

It was only after I sunk about $1.6K into it (the 'Opening Choice' given above) that I realized: 1) This bet was for Round #7 (not Round #6), and 2) You were only going to put up one real bet for the current Round #6 - a mid bet for the game between Leko and Kramnik. Well it was right there I stopped and realized that I would have to either invest at least another 800 to 1.2K in c-bucks to neutralize my mistake and fix it (my total investment there was 2.8K, btw). Since two major openings (with two sub-opening choices) were involved and I wasn't sure yet which major opening system (the Sicilian or the Ruy) to favor. Plus, you didn't duplicate your betting entries from the previous spread (dropped the 'Daily Double' entry entirely). Had I known all this in advance (stressing the word 'advance') I would have pondered my betting strategy and crafted it much more carefully.

Next time if something totally horrendous like this ever occurs may I suggest that you 'Stop the Press' and take the time to explain to us exactly what's going on so that we fully and clearly understand it. In reading your disclaimer much later (within the small text block on the actual betting process of the webpage re: bogus published pairings made by FIDE) yes it's clear. However, this was no ordinary ~SNAFU~ it was a major blunder creating havoc throughout the chess world and I think many of us didn't realize for quite some time what was really going on and what had just actually occurred and taken place.

[Continued in the next post]

Sep-21-07  malthrope: [Previous post continued]

On the bright side at least for me (having $2.8K less to work and bet with) I tried my very best. Certainly had my opportunities but didn't hit the key components necessary to pull it off (I've already explained the advantages of having and making your c-bucks work for you in this Forum) and it's unknown if I could have done better with more. Since in the end I only ended up losing a few hundred c-bucks and still maintained my plus $5K status and neither <TIMER> or <Buriag> have run away with it yet! ~lol~ I was fully expecting to see maybe one or two CG.com members possibly breaking the $10K barrier already. OK - without further detailed explanation this is a good as place as any to end it. I just felt it important to point out very clearly there are direct consequences to your actions taken. It's all 'water under the bridge' now. ;-)

On to Round #8 and let the great CG Bookie betting continue and 'Good Luck' to all! :-))) Regards, - Mal

PS: Of course today we received another WCC present from Mexico... Today's great chess games were totally all screwed up! ~lol~ Naturally, it didn't affect the betting at all just the viewing pleasure until we all had the chance to figure it out. On which chessboard, with which opening system and with which players? All right so we knew immediately where the 'Kramnik-Gelfand' game was! ;-)

Sep-21-07  TIMER: <malthrope> Normally I would be near 10,000 now ( as I felt the odds on Anand winning, the rest draws was so good, I would normally have gone mad with 500+ there!) but a conservative little bet there (150 chessbucks) considering that I didn't want to risk as I have little time now- won 1700- unbelievable. I am not making any more bets for a while now as am getting too deep into revision- but I just couldn't resist this one just to secure my top ten position for when I return.
Sep-21-07  malthrope: <TIMER: <malthrope> Normally I would be near 10,000 now ( as I felt the odds on Anand winning, the rest draws was so good... [...]>

Exactamundo <TIMER> ! :-) I'll be holding a special place for yeah if I'm still in the game... As mentioned eons ago Priority #1 is to qualify (gain one of the top ten spots).

Once that looks secure (a solid berth with 'x' amount of others whom all appear unbeatable) then it's just plain pure fun. Every betting game is different so we just await and see how this one functions and develops with its many twist and turns. <TD> told me that you had unique knack for this CG Bookie betting game, so I look forward to your eventual return! Just ace those exams that's your only priority right now. ;-) Regards, - Mal

Sep-21-07  technical draw: Well, <touch of knight>, your squatting days are over. I'm back in the cellar. See how a real Pro does it? I dropped 50 spots in one day but also I even had a chance to be in the top ten. Magic? No, Luck? No. Serendipity? Yes! However I'm still not too comfortable, the ghetto is getting crowded I need some breathing room.
Sep-21-07  technical draw: By the way there's a pretty good fight for first place. I think TIMER will take it. He has the experience and he's cool under pressure. If I had any chessbucks I'd bet it on TIMER.
Sep-21-07  technical draw: Well, now I see that TIMER is taking a Sabbatical. Not wise! The top ten is NEVER secured.
Sep-21-07  Tomlinsky: <TD> Just wanted to inform you that Phase II of 'Operation Diaper-Sniper' will soon be swinging into action. All will soon be revealed...
Sep-21-07  technical draw: <Tomlinsky> Phase II ? I was never informed of Phase 1. And I do wish to participate, even though I haven't the slightest idea of what you are talking about.
Sep-21-07  malthrope: <technical draw: <Tomlinsky> Phase II ? I was never informed of Phase 1. [...]>

I bet 500 c-bucks on Phase II... ;-)

PS: Made a fortune on Phase I ~lol~
