Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <Jess> <admires his skill> Me too. And, grudgingly, his way with words, even inadvisable ones. I prefer a world with Kurtz in it to a world ruled by the cretins on the Polgar blog -- "He's insulted everyone -- now he will pay big time!"

As for the harem, maybe it's just an unusual sense of humour. Of course you have slightly more telling evidence...

jessicafischerqueen: Good grief you're as rigorous as <Eyal>!

that's a quote from <Polgar's> blog, I recognize it.

And yes, the <cretins on the Polgar blog> are merely <Kurtz>, but without any kind of talent. Let alone World Class talent, which GMNS has without a shadow of a doubt.

BTW I have read many versions of this "idea" on CG.com that somehow players like <anand> are "doomed to be second" etc. etc.

What a load of titanic rubbish.

A <Short> (heh) list of players who never got to number one, I mean come on.

Short, Timman, Tarrasch, Reti, Keres, Fine, Nimzowitch, Tartakower, and we could fill up ten more pages of FROGSPAWN with such a list.

Not to mention <anand> was, arguably, number one in that he won one of two competing World Championships, and still is number one in the sense that his ELO is highest.

BTW, you do realize that there is a sizeable contingent who still regard <Bobby> to be World Champion.

Testament to his charisma and simply stunning talent in relation to not just his peers but to all of Chess History.

Personally, I regard <Josh Waitzkin> to be current World Champ, even though he stopped serious chess study at age 19 in favor of serious Tae Kwon Do study.

You realize that <Waitzkin> was American champion every single year for his age group when he was an active player? And that he actually won the World Championship for his age-group twice?

Jess of the Obssessed with her virtual chess tutor.

I'm buying his new book about the "Psychology of Competition".

He's a buddhist with a fierce will to excel, compete, and win.

And that's not a contradiction.

He's a freekin Samurai!!!

Domdaniel: <Jess> Clearly, Boris Spassky remains the real World Champion, following his superb victory over Fischer in Iceland 1972 -- games after the default don't count. And again in Sveti Stefan (Fischer was playing illegally -- another default), and recently vs Portisch (one blunder excused). Matches with Karpov, Korchnoi etc in 1970s were all illegal...

Maybe a case could be made for Morphy, but I haven't heard from him since Hurricane Katrina...

May-07-07  mckmac: <jessicafischerqueen> < Am I a <harem castoff>? Probably not cuz i was never "cast in" in the first place.

LOL <old dog> indeed. I wish I had his wife's email so I could forward his incredibly clumsy <mash note email> to me.>

How do you know the "<mash note email>" was from GM Short himself? Perhaps it was from an imposter.Without a full disclosure and explanation must we conclude your insinuations are slanderous and therefore actionable?

  jessicafischerqueen: <mckmac>

It's a fair cop. I know nothing for certain and will heretofore shut the heck up about it.

You'll never hear it mentioned again.

BTW I left you a message in <Eyal's> forum.

Cheers,
Jess

May-08-07  mckmac: <JFQ> This strengthens a belief which I have long cherished, that in a few centuries women will be the larger, stronger sex, admired for their biceps and superfluous hair, and that men will be their toys and domestic comforters, exciting tenderness in the female breast by their small feet, pretty soft hands, and general helplessness. I do not think I have a heart, for I have never been able to locate my pulse, or any other symptom of a circulatory system, but I am willing to share any of the benefits of male delicacy./Robertson Davies//Marchbanks' Garland <andthatsallfolks>

Domdaniel: <mckmac> Males a delicacy? It's possible, I suppose, but they'd need to be thoroughly scrubbed and soaked in brine first. None of yer trendy stir-fries.
May-08-07  mckmac: <Domo> Oh,alright then,I give up,best of three it is,first to count to ten.

Many many heartfelt thanks for your letter of September 25. Though it filled me with shame and remorse, I was grateful for the Christian impulse which moved you to stretch out a hand to me in my wretchedness. You say "We become that with which we busy our mind." Too true! Alas, too true! I recall that as a boy the school chaplain said to my class, "If you tell dirty jokes you will grow to look like a dirty joke!" This is been my hapless destiny.... Would you do me a favour? Will you send me a photograph of yourself, so that I may behold a countenance suffused with Christian love, and perhaps even repent?

Domdaniel: Hocus Pocus? Nonsense, it's Numerology 101, often used to impress simpletons and the gullible...

We'll have no crude numerology on this, Thomas Pynchon's 70th birthday. I expect the hard stuff.

  Domdaniel: Also known as <casting out nines>, this 5+5 = 10 = 1 stuff. A variety of modular arithmetic.

And lo, the Lord came into a stony desert place, where there was a woman possessed by nines, nine sheets to the wind, talking nineteen to the dozen, like a nine-day wonder. "Begone, o nines" sayeth the Lord. And he cast them out. And verily she became a responsible member of society thereafter, and had nine grandchildren. Which was a tad suspicious, but the Lord is not a paranoid Lord, and he let it pass.

May-08-07  Knightlord: <often used to impress simpletons and the gullible...> I'm very impressed with this numerology stuff.
May-08-07  mckmac: Apologies <Knightlord> - I left out most of the heavy artillary on purpose. This is a family show isn't it? (Knightlord=55)

<Domo> I *only do* simple stuff. It's quicker. And we have you to tackle the monsters, sort the frogs from the toads, open new doors and show us when we forget, that there are more things in Heaven and Earth..

Domdaniel: <Knightlord> That's OK. Would you care to buy a used car? Brooklyn Bridge? A Knighthood?

Oh, I see you've got one. Never mind, then.

  Domdaniel: <mckmac> Purely out of idle interest, do double digits like 55 and 22 have some special significance in your system? Otherwise, according to the usual method, 55 = 1 (either 5+5 = 10 = 9+1 = 1, or 55 = (6 x 9)+1 = 1 --- same principle).
May-08-07  Knightlord: <Brooklyn Bridge> er, I only know Texas Hold 'em.
May-08-07
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <Knightlord> Actually, I think that chess and hold'em have a lot in common -- bluffs, counterbluffs, tempters, psychic play, etc etc. But I have trouble persuading other players of *either* game about the similarities...

Must be the way I play.

Domdaniel: <KL> Sorry, where have my manners gone? Brooklyn Bridge / Texas Holdem / Kenosha Pinochle / Washington Whist ... etc. Heh heh, and a hearty LOL for those so inclined.

Now, as I was saying ...

May-08-07  Knightlord: <Dom> You used the 'word' LOL! First time? I thought LOL was the forbidden word at Frogspawn. (oops, now I said it myself).
May-08-07  mckmac: <Domo> It's not my system, Numerology 101 - you are right on the money. But just the basics, skip everything else - I think pop/num like pop/astro is at best a sort of counselling/giving of attention kind of thing. If you let someone *tell you what a number means* you might as well hand over the housekeys and your birth certificate as well.

<Purely out of idle interest, do double digits like 55 and 22 have some special significance in your system? > Yes.The *master numbers* are 11,22,33,etc.Any repeated single number is a *master number*(n.b.No number, either single or master is any better or worse than any other number. It's what *you* bring to the dinner party, that's what people remember - not what kind of car you drove.I hope that's helpful.

May-08-07  mckmac: Postscript: so only numbers 1-9 exist in numerology.17=8,54=9,98=17=8 etc.Even our own 23 reduces to a standard 5.

Domdaniel: <Knightlord> I've relaxed. Eased up. No first-person primary LOLling, of course, but a very occasional meta-LOL -- eg "LOL now if you like" or "why that, heh heh, almost warrants a LOL" -- is permissible.

I know, I'm a softy/ wimp/ wet/ class traitor ... and probably a Crypto-Lollard, even.
