   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Lord, I confess. Thanks to Your Servant <guy4gzus>, or whatever his name is, who hath appeareth, lo, upon the game page, I have seen the error of my ways. I confess that I have been sarcastic, flippant, and downright rude on occasion to Thy Servants, who posteth upon the Nickel page and seemeth not to have a braincell between them. I understand, Lord, that this is indeed Thee, moving in Mysterious Ways to give Natural Selection a nudge, as otherwise thy Servants would be extinct by now and would not be around to be insulteth by me. I also comprehend, Lord, that the Servants whom I insult do then scurry off and vote for horrible moves like Qh6, just to punish me, oh Lord, and that when we loseth the game it will be entirely my Fault, if it so happeneth that concepts like Bad Karma and Critical Mass are where you're at, Lord.

Verily, Lord, is it writ that Born Again is Twice Too Often, but I confesseth here anyhow, in my forum, which is Thine to smite anytime that Thou feelest like it.

Nov-04-06  achieve: <Domdaniel> Good evening sir! If allowed to be so frank, the picture of you, topping one of your columns, is very flattering.

Friendly is the first word that comes to mind.. ;) Kind is a second one..

Think I'll shut up now.. Go and get GMAN!!

Nov-04-06  Milo: There is a car parked outside the cafeteria. It bears a bumper sticker: "Born okay the first time."
Nov-04-06  twinlark: I'll confess *very very quietly* to having had the notion that if they're born again, why were they born at all? Did the big G slip up the first time or sumfin? But I'd never voice such an abject thought, as I can feel the water around me heating up at the merest prospect.

I'll go now and dive into the arctic coolness of sliding variation allocation. Hey! where's the Arctic gone, there used to be ice here?

Eureka! Global warning! It's the heretics causing global warming! Danger Will R***inson Danger!

Domdaniel: You should now the routine by now, o avian gemini. The idea is to start trivially, in as dull and meandering a style as possible - I'd say "like the conversational equivalent of a Ruy Lopez" except that's probably an even greater heresy round here, and may attract opprobium on an unprecedented scale.

Having successfully said nothing for a few lines you then put the proverbial boot in. Heretics do actually cause global warming, you know - Hell, which Dante said was an island in the great southern ocean, is actually just under our feet. It keeps expanding to develop sulfur saunas for incoming heretic budget flights. No wonder the ice is melting.

To quote Viv Stanshall yet again: "Is MRS Penguin at home?"

Nov-04-06  Nightranger: I'm actually impressed at the number of ways that have surfaced to say "twinlark" without actually saying "twinlark." Does this same talent apply to chess as well? Where can I get one? :-)

Domdaniel: <Nightranger> Just a little light encoding to amuse ourselves, avoid the dreaded nightmare of (threefold) repetition, and throw the bloodhounds off the trail...

Can it apply to chess? Hmm. I once tried writing down my moves in French - 3.Cc3 De7 etc - but wound up confusing myself rather than my opponent.

<Defi> Hey, 'evil' is a bit strong, innit? Vile and depraved, fine. Malevolent, maybe. Wicked? Okay. But evil, not. We're mostly on the side of the good guys here...

Domdaniel: Oh Lord, sorry to hassle Thee with more impertinent queries from the Downstairs part of thy Domain. We trust that Thy Chessgames with Steinitz and <archives> went well for Thee. We were just wondering, Lord, is it Thou that hath a fetish for spoof 17th century English, or is that something that Thy Servants inflict upon Thee, along with tormented questions about dead parrots and imminent planetary disaster? Is it even possible to say 'imminent planetary disaster' in 17th century English? Thee must agree that 'the end is nigh' is kinda, well, vague...

They Servant, Lord, always here to be smote if thou can be bothereth.

Domdaniel: <Deffi> True, too true. I thought it was an obscure word from an 18th century French version of '1001 Nights', meaning 'a magician's castle under the sea'. I later discovered a gamer zone in cyberspace where it's the name of the Evil One. I hadn't known that, but should probably have anticipated something like it.

cf a recent development chez <mack>, where I accidentally stumbled on the actual source of his name - an old song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band called 'Big Shot', with the line:

- A punk stopped me on the street. "You got a light, mack?" No, but I've got a dark brown overcoat...

And you? Were you sitting there, playing 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Nxe4, or what? Are there subtler shades of meaning beyond the reach of us mere submarine-based evil magicians?

Are there subtler shades of meaning beyond the reach of us mere submarine-based evil magicians?> that would be telling wouldn't it.. actually this is quite amusing... one day about three years ago I did a browser search for "Open Defence" in multiple search engines (google, yahoo) and one of the searches came up with a link to chessgames.com, so after having a look at the site I decided to sign up .. and while thinking of a Karpovesque nick..I hit ctrl + v which pasted the search term "Open Defence" .... I thought it was as good a nick as any.. .and since I played the Open Defence a fair bit... the rest is well.. not quite history.. but...

  Domdaniel: INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS

Use the new Striped Paint feature, aka the 'favorites list'.

Go to the color options and select 'grey'. Then use <elbow brackets> to make the text turn magenta.

Grey and Magenta are this season's hot, cool tones. Don't be left behind!

Nov-06-06  monad: <Dom>
What? No posts and the day is half over? Good grief, what have I done! Didn't mean it.

BTW, is it 'Liza' with an -a- or Liza with an -o-?

Nov-06-06  Hincho: <Domdaniel> Thank you for the Vivian Stanshall quote it raised my flagging spirits. I recalled the film in question and suddenly the world seemed a far better place. Bless England for her eccentrics they really are the stuff of dreams and legends.

Domdaniel: <Hincho> Cheers. To English Eccentrics, and Viv Stanshall in particular. And I'm not even English...

The quote, btw, is even older than the film. Sir Henry at Rawlinson end first came out as a vinyl LP around 1978, with Viv doing all the voices and songs himself. I don't have a copy anymore, but it obviously imprinted itself on my brain at an impressionable age.

Happy to be of service. Omnes Blotto!

Domdaniel: <Monad> Sensory bombardment curtailed due to lack of ammo. Actually, Real-Life called, and I couldn't pretend I was out. For now I must emulate the Men of Erith, whom nobody see-eth or heareth...

Liza with an 'o'? Hmm. Liza Minnelli hugged me once - in Simpsons on the Strand, oddly enough, under the bust of Ray Keene - and I responded with an 'oh!'. Long story, but not the one you want....

As ever.
