 | | Domdaniel: Well hung, Jess. It may hurt now but you'll feel the benefit in no time. Or maybe that's 'in the long run'. I can never get trite aphorisms right. Anyway, close your eyes and think of Kurtz. Better now? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Heh thanks <Dom>. Not really, the hurt only leaves when "one" plays and wins a game against a strong player again. The "fear" is that that day may never come.
What I don't like about hanging pieces is that if you have a good and interesting position when you do it, you can't even take masochistic solace in <Botnniviks> advice to replay the loss and find your errors. Ah well, there's always next year. |
| Jul-30-07 | | achieve: Was the dagnabbit post deleted? Or was I delusional? Who knows? |
| Jul-30-07 | | achieve: I deleted my reaction to Jess' post as well. |
| Jul-30-07 | | dabearsrock1010: <domdaniel> Im not sure if it was to be called catch-19 but i do recall that it is correct that it was a different number at first...heller apparently in fact did write a sequel the name of which escapes me but it was and is not considered anywhere near as good as catch-22 |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: post? what post? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dom>
you <Dom>!
Front and center, young man. |
| Aug-02-07 | | WBP: <Dom> Hail, sir! Sorry to be so out of touch. been away and all manner of other things. Mostly distractions of a kind that have limited my capacity to participate on Chessgames (aside from a certain murder tial on another site). However, I have been following things--looking in, going to various forums, and genernally keeping up. As usual, your wit has been a major pleasure to look in on! My chess sucks of late. I'm considering giving it up. Paper, Scissors, Rock sems so much easier and less frustrating. |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Don't give up <Bill>!! chess will always be there waiting for you, like a <rabid badger>. Where the heck did <Dom> scarper to? Interviewing some <starlet>, again, I should imagine. |
| Aug-03-07 | | mack: <I'm considering giving it up. Paper, Scissors, Rock sems so much easier and less frustrating.> Haven't scientists in Canada shown it to be a dead draw with perfect play? |
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: <dabearsrock> It was <Catch 18>, I've discovered. Horrible, huh? |
Aug-03-07
 | | WannaBe: <dabearsrock> & <Domdaniel> It was originally to be published as Catch-18, but, Leon Uris released his Mila 18 first. To avoid confusion, (you know how us book readers always gets these numerical things confused) Joseph Heller renamed it to Catch-22. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph... first paragraph... |
| Aug-03-07 | | Eyal: From the wiki article on Catch-22 itself (quoting a study of the early composition history of the novel): <The number 18 has special meaning in Judaism and was relevant to early drafts of the novel which had a somewhat greater Jewish emphasis. There was a suggestion for the title Catch-11, with the duplicated 1 in parallel to the repetition found in a number of character exchanges in the novel, but due to the release of the 1960 movie <Ocean's Eleven> this was also rejected. Catch-14 was also rejected apparently because the publisher did not feel that 14 was a "funny number". Catch-17 was also rejected so as not to be confused with the WWII film <Stalag 17>. So eventually the title came to be Catch-22, which, like 11, has a duplicated digit with the 2 also referring to a number of déjà vu like events common in the novel> It doesn't say why Catch-23 was rejected, though...

| Aug-03-07 | | WBP: <Catch-14 was also rejected apparently because the publisher did not feel that 14 was a "funny number"> I always thought 61 was a hilarious number. And don't get me started on 47. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Dom>!!
A rare appearence! Kudos for your <succinctness>, though your fans await your next <Magnus Carlsen Opus>. |
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: OK. I'm thinking of calling it <The Crying of Lot 48> ... |
| Aug-03-07 | | Eyal: But then it might be confused with the movie <48 Hrs.> |
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: Confound it, have <all> the numbers been taken? |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: HEY! What do <two bald guys from Minnesetoa> have to do to get a G'DAY outta you???? Humph |
| Aug-03-07 | | twinlark: <Confound it, have <all> the numbers been taken?> That sentiment deserves a lament; let's call it <Where have all the numbers gone?>. |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Well I've got <both> your numbers you blackguards. Fair Warning!! |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: (another rare appearance by <Doggimus>) |
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: <'bald guys from 'Minnesetoa'>? Hmph. Is that Minnesetoa East of Eden? But g'day nonetheless. Even if my initial calculations were wrong and there are really eleven of you. Jess's Eleven? Might be a movie in there somewhere... and a seafaring sequel, Ketch-22. |
| Aug-03-07 | | twinlark: What about The Magnificent 17 or the Fantastic Forty? Sound like a plan? |
