| Aug-03-07 | | WBP: Or what is the sound of <two> hands clapping? |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dom>!
No more secret allusions to the TERRIBLE DISASTER VEHICLE <Krakatoa, East of Java>, a staple on the <Ted Turner Cavalcade of Moldy Oldies Cable Movie Channel>. You think you can fool me buster??
And a <triple allusion> at that if you count <Steinbeck> and <James Dean> as two separate people, which I'm not sure is wise. But I'm weak on "calculating," as you know. |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: 11 of me??
Good grief man you're making even ME paranoid now.
11 x 2 = 22, which is my age.
And if there is only 1 of me (hint- there is either 1 or 11 of me), then add the 1. Making <23>.
Ipso Fatso, I rest my "case." |
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Yes, it feels good to have one's age referenced in the title of a literary masterpiece. Catch-22. The Crying of Lot 49. Anne of a Thousand Days. The Billion Year Spree... and so on. |
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Bill> -- <what is the sound of <two> hands clapping?> Careful research and experiment suggests a sort of, well, *clapping* noise. Seems applausible. |
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> -- <You think you can fool me buster?? > No.
But I can fool *myself* into thinking that I have, sometimes, which is sufficient reward. |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Good grief <Dom> there's no need to put the <emphasis thingies> around the word <myself>. Yes, there is still an <I>, as your avatar attests, advertises even. This is the entire project of the <Frankfort School>, to delineate the ways in which <modernity> confuses people into believing that they are no longer an <I>. And don't get me started on <post-modernity>, because I maintain that it doesn't even exist. Can you whack it with a hammer?
Unless you can whack it with a hammer, it doesn't exist. Post hoc ergo propter hoc.
Cave Canem as well. |

Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hey the <St. George Defence> is the <Opening of the Day>! This has to be auspicious. |
| Aug-03-07 | | twinlark: Try again...Hello Dom. Everything OK? |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Another <now not quite so rare> appearance by <Doggimus>.... hey check out the <breathtaking> Queen sac in this game folks: Kramnik vs Kasparov, 1994 |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Good lord, I was just messing around with the <Opening Explorer>, and <Kasparov's Queen Sac> in the game I posted there <is IN THEORY>... Holy Crap.
It's an <established line> in the <KID> and mighty complicated, I can tell you. Who knew?
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: Hi, TL. All is indeed OK. I'm just sorta phasing in and out here rather than being jacked to the machine fulltime... are you on for a playing role in this new Timmergame, or do you want to get really stuck in? Thought I'd hang round the sidelines myself, maybe some freelance nuisancing, some "I'll have you know I hosted the first ever analysis forum" pomposities, and so on. Whatever it takes. Or whatever I can take. |
Aug-03-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> -- <emphasis>
Oops. Musta been the stress. Heh.
G'night. |
Aug-03-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Take care <Master Domo>. |
| Aug-03-07 | | twinlark: Similarly Dom. I'm not planning on much beside being a sideline nuisance in the GMT game. I certainly won't be engaging in any more 2am or 3am wake ups. Last year's efforts left me plumb knackered (oz for v. tired). Good night. |
| Aug-04-07 | | JoeWms: "Twelve Angry Men."
Aug-04-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Er.. looks more like <two angry men> and an <insane woman>, surely? And no, I won't stop calling you <Shirley> |
| Aug-04-07 | | dabearsrock1010: Closing time was the supposed sequel if catch-22, written quite a long time after. I found it on the wikipedia link. |
Aug-04-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Joe> I thought you'd out-crypticked me for a moment there, but then it all made sense. "Twelve Angry Men" does indeed serve as a reminder that there are 12-year-olds in the audience. If we're talking mental age, I'd go further. Maybe even as far as "Slaughterhouse-5". |
Aug-04-07
 | | Domdaniel: Funny what sticks in the mind. I can remember that Catch-22 begins something like "It was love at first sight. The first time Yossarian saw the chaplain he fell madly in love with him" -- and I can recall several characters (Yossarian, Major Major, Milo Minderbender, Hungry Joe, Scheisskopf, etc). But even though I read other Heller books (Something Happened, Good as Gold) much more recently, I can remember nothing at all about 'em. And there was another one with paintings in it, but I can't even remember the title. Brain rot. Or Catch-22 was very memorable. Or both. |
Aug-04-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> See how I refrained from saying "the numbers add up to nothing" right thru our latest burst of numerology? Steely Discipline. Brother of Dan. |
| Aug-04-07 | | Eyal: <And there was another one with paintings in it> "Picture This" - and a very good one, I think (not in the same league with Catch-22, but I'd say definitely the best of all the other Heller novels). |
Aug-04-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Eyal> Picture This, of course, thanks (something Rembrandtish, wasn't it?). Which may explain why I couldn't remember it: that chunk of memory was overwritten by the Blondie song of the same name. And 'Closing Time' is also a Leonard Cohen song. Patterns, patterns. |
Aug-04-07
 | | Domdaniel: <twinlark> Aye, we heard the chimes at midnight all right. And many other chimes as well. |
| Aug-04-07 | | twinlark: Sheer Look Sherry (my favourite vintage): getting up just before 6 bells in the morning watch to vote on a move with zero other responsibilities. And then tuning into George G on talkSPORT at 6 bells to while away the morning watch and the first 4 bells of the forenoon. Question: if there are any other politicians in the Western world that can achieve the anatomical improbability of displaying the guts and brains George exhibits in his left toe nail, where the bl**dy hell are they©? |
