Virginia Madsen did play well in The Stone Merchant... I had a boyhood crush on her BUT that's about all I can tell. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Deffi> *The Late Zombie Woof*
... in memory of our esteemed colleague and fellow mad publication, Zombie Woof (Dawn of the Undead Doggy Woggy) these offices will remain closed until we feel like opening them, so there. |
|
| Nov-23-07 | | achieve: <Dom> The office seems in fine shape to me... So there. And if the Guardia won't LET OP! I'm here, watching every move... Kidding aside- thanks for those great posts before royalty arrived -- much appreciated- and back to the drawing board for me... You wouldn't believe it but I'm still wrestling with the exact pronounciation of "ordering food" from that clip... "put some Gerelick sauce in there, will ya" & "nine coke" Would ye believe I bought a speaker set for it yesterday? To be able to have the tape on and walking around, while talking and practicing? It's true... 120 euros, bot well worth it, as I can now listen to clips without having to stay glued to my headphones - I really dig this. (To be honest I am happy like a baby with my newly acquired speaker system) Weltrusten ( = good night/sleep well)

 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Some kind of vaguely socialist streak in me thinks that people should be paid according to the difficulty, complexity, and social utility of the job they do. So I'd stay pretty poor, as writing about arty stuff is neither difficult nor useful. Welt rusten ... aye, 'tis a rusty oul' world to be sure ... Doctors need to know a lot, and do good, so most deserve the dosh. People in financial services and advertising, on the other hand, should have negative incomes. But the really super-tough job, which deserves a multimillionaire salary, is the guy in the chip shop who takes the orders. "Three chips, one battered cod, one fish supper with half a curry sauce, two cheeseburges one with ketchup one without, extra chips, and a ..." all spoken superfast in a baffling variety of regional and international accents, mumbled from four metres away across a crowded queue... An incredibly skilled job. He needs an ear to match yours, plus an eidetic memory and a way with people -- a sort of <chipper> bedside manner, in the chipper. And he performs a key social service, lubricating the march of the deep-fried potato and the battered sausage. He should be ranked with two doctors, 500 bankers, or half a million advertising copywriters. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> Yes, yes, yes. a timely reminder from <yourself> The vast majority of us toil, and have toiled, at <jobs that are very difficult, very unpleasant, and very poor paying> our whole lives. Almost everybody.
Teaching is very hard work (unless you don't care about teaching, oddly enough), but it has HUGE emotional rewards. So I am very, very, very, very lucky.
Most aren't.
THanks for the reminder.
Speekin a "hard times," there is a link to an AMAZING interview with <Korchnoi> in <Eyal's> forum. |

| Nov-24-07 | | Red October: <People in financial services ..... should have negative incomes.> why so ? do you think deciding whether to buy 100,000,000 Euro as against 3000,000,000 Rupaiyah is fun ? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hey you guys I just posted a game in my forum.
Would you be willing to have a look at it and maybe even put a powerful engine on it? Suggestions? Improvements?
My <shreddies 3> isn't very strong I don't think. Regards,

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Doggimus>!
Congratulations on your election victory!
You might not want to take all the personal credit for this red letter day for the forces of light and freedom, but I think you probably should. Excelsior!! |
|
Nov-24-07
 | | Domdaniel: <twinlark> Our deepest congratulations, three huzzahs, two hoorays, one with a hip-hip, one without, and some extra cheers. Cheers, mate. The Ruddy Duck has <downed> Howie the Duck. The outgoing Oz PM -- admittedly they're *all* outgoing compared to pols elsewhere -- has conceded defeat. His <I've been plucked> speech was historic and hysteric. Sic semper tyrannis. Out for a duck. Let freedom ring. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Special <<<Blue letter>>> Paper from the <<<Frogspawn Department>>> of the Paranormal:> I don't want to alarm anyone, but have you ever seen this? http://www.veoh.com/videos/v992086k... <Yes, it's <<<The Wizard of Oz>>> with the <Dark Side of the Moon> playing. I took notes.
1. The second Dorothy falls in the Pig Sty, the music suddenly becomes dramatic. 2. The second the wicked witch appears on a bike, the Alarms ring (from <Time>). 3. When they sing "No one told you when to run" Dorothy takes her first step running away from home. 4. The second the lyrics to <Time> stop, Dorothy leaves the fortune teller and the tornado starts 5. The second those women start Yowling after <Time> is the moment the Tornado is first viewed. 6. The women stop Yowling suddenly at the very moment Dorothy passes out. 7. The very instant Dorothy opens her door and sees Oz, <Money> begins to play. 8. During <Us and Them>, the very instant they sing "black, black, black, black" the <Wicked Witch> appears in Black Garb. 9. When they sing "which is which" there is a rapid cross-cut between the <Wicked Witch> and the <Good Witch>. Coincidence?
Maybe. But I was too spooked to continue, so I bailed at this point. Forget about the wierd synchronizations...
<DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW FRIGHTENING IT IS TO WATCH THIS MOVIE SOBER?> Final note: My dread was increased considerably by rumors that the <Leprachauns> who worked in this film were paid in <Monopoly Money> and forced to <eat gruel>. End Report>
Look for the next <Frogspawn Report on the Paranormal> next weekend: <Moon landing? What moon landing?> |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Dom>!!
Late hours for you, isn't it?
It must be a bit jarring to wake up to my shrieking every morning, but it IS the weekend after all. Would you take a Gander at the game I posted in my forum if you get a chance? I also finished a <Frogspawn> editorial there and I'm trying to start an <election victory party> over in <Doggimus'> forum. Me. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Red> -- <do you think deciding whether to buy 100,000,000 Euro as against 3000,000,000 Rupaiyah is fun?> No idea, frankly. I guess it might be, depending on what you do with the 100,000,000 Euro. At current prices, that's almost enough for a down payment on a bag of chips. |
|
Nov-24-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Is it yourself? I'll take your synchro-spooky semiotic reading of The Wizard of Oz on trust, as I've actually, well, ahem, never seen the original movie all the way through. - Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore ... |
|
Nov-24-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: That's right: we're in <Frogspawn>: A considerably more frightening place.
Interesting, however. |

| Nov-25-07 | | mack: <Dom>
Not sure if you've got a copy of A Game of Chess With Marcel Duchamp but some kind man has put the entire thing up on youtube during this past week or so. It's absolutely essential viewing for anybody who has the slightest interest in chess - which is all of us, right? http://youtube.com/results?search_q... |
|
| Nov-25-07 | | Red October: ok just thought of a naughty joke not one I can tell my daughter when she grows up though, here goes If you met up with Alexandra Kosteniuk how about asking her "Does your Mother know you are a pawn star?" *ba ba boom* good night folks |
|
| Nov-26-07 | | achieve: Heh Chessplayers should steer away from pawnography, unless it is presented like this: paw-no-grap-hy <Dom> I share your socialistic streak- and wish it wasn't so "vague"... I always felt that the guys who lay the pavement of the streets deserve just as much as any other profession for that mattter - the rich folk wouldn't have anywhere to go with their stinking humvees and four-wheel-drives if it weren't for those guys who (used to) be on their knees all day cementing the stones.. the idea of transportation by bike train and subway seems perfect to me. As little cars as possible... Simplistic view? Yes
And why be in hurry all the time? Dunno
Why didn't I finish Med-school and become a rich doctor? hmmm... "This feller mosta been outta his bin!" sigh
Teachers
deserve much more than they are getting now, eh Jess? You were
so
right with your post - our education system is in worse shape than it ever was, because of the low wages and insane workloads... Billions are wasted on useless, prestigeous projects- and the reasons for that are as obvious as they are deplorable. 1,000,000 as a down payment for a bag of chips - I like the idea... Let's turn the tables and see what happens... AROOO! Let's burn a candle for teachers, chippers and Garry, while we're at it. Oh - and for....and...and..and . |
|
Nov-26-07
 | | Domdaniel: <mack> Merveilleusement (tout) fait. I've just watched all six bits in some scrambled order or other. Charmant old respirateur, n'est-ce pas? Many, many resonances here. Varese is a link to Zappa, for those who like that kind of thing. And Pasadena to Fischer, for those who like *that* kind of thing. His line about distrusting the verb 'to be' -- which I must have heard before and forgotten -- echoes Korzybski, founder of General Semantics, whom Burroughs heard lecture around 1940 and picked up the same idea from. All goes back to Marcel in the end, dunnit? Ta. |
|
Nov-26-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> I'm afraid that "vaguely" is as good as I get, on any issue. Precision is for engineeers and, uh, chessplayers. But I'll give any profit to <clarity>, if you like ... |
|
| Nov-26-07 | | achieve: Oh <Dom> My post wasn't meant at all sarcastic towards you in any way - I agree with you on all accounts. I adopted your view if you will and went on from there... just was critical at my own "simplicity" and at the same time happy with it... Any sarcasm was meant directed at myself and the dyscrepancies in wages eg in Holland... I fully agree with you on that- wether it is realistic or not is not the issue. In fact there is uproar and rallies at this very moment in holland because of the shortage in teachers... - Alarming situation and unusual in this country. |
|
| Nov-26-07 | | achieve: cont...
Actually, one doesn't need an engineer's precision to figure out that the wages of quality teachers need to be upgraded at least a scale or three (I fully agree with you on the deterioration of [linguistic] education as we discussed with <dakgootje>, last year)-- in fact it should be rewarded the highest among jobs in the public sector... And people working in HoReCa are probably very underpaid- I agree- but that is harder to influence... When I said "let's turn the tables", I meant it. I'm all for shaking up things and challenging conventional values and rusty patterns. |
|
| Nov-26-07 | | achieve: sigh
Politics don't look that far ahead; the effects of inferior education on macro-economic tables and stats will not be measurable for at least 7-10 years... The current protests may have a positive effect, now. Frogspawn is not the place for my rantings.
heh I guess the chipper analogy sparked a nerve of recognition with me. |
