Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

<Dom> I do not understand...

My previous posts were honestly meant as explaining worry with the situation here... Nothing more.

I admitted it didn't belong at Frogspawn.

Domdaniel: <Niels> Sorry, my fault, brain intermittently elsewhere today.

Anything whatsoever that you care to write belongs in Frogspawn, and I'd never suggest otherwise. Plus, I actually agree with you about teachers, chip-menu-memorizers, and such.

There is not and never has been a problem. Entre nous, anyhow.

Just this occasionally sticky medium, maybe.

PS. I see that "let op" has a wider range of use than English "watch it", ie it's also used as a header on 'warnings' or 'look out - danger' type of stuff. I found this example:

<LET OP!
De inkt kan schadelijk zijn bij inwendig gebruik.>

Yes, well, can't argue with that, maybe we'll laugh it off over a small ink someday...

Domdaniel: PS, the "semislav one" is Kasparov ...
Nov-26-07  achieve: <Dom> Thanks! My fault as well- I reacted prematurely and somewhat defensively, for some reason.

C'est tout cool entre nous, n'est-ce pas?

<LET OP!
De inkt kan schadelijk zijn bij inwendig gebruik.>
BE CAREFUL! The ink can be harmful when used internally - (do not swallow the ink) - doh!

Yes, WARNING! is a good translation... heh

We won't let a sticky medium get in our way- let's have a ..ink!

Seems that a court has affirmed the semislav's Jail-time... Wonder what will be next...

Did you see the short interview he gave at the Bill Maher Show? (There was a link of it somewhere but I don't have it ready right now...)

Nov-26-07  achieve: Oops, another small slip up...

LET OP = watch/read (this) carefully

BE CAREFUL = wees - (an irregular, imperativ conjugation of the verb "zijn" [to be]) - voorzichtig!

(Sometimes I long for some carefree, easy chatter in Dutch...heh)

Nov-26-07  achieve: <Dom><PS. I see that "let op" has a wider range of use than English "watch it"> You're right. Allow me to explain...

Voor de volledigheid: (For completeness?? -tough to find the right 'single' word...)

Let op! - is an imperative form of the verb "opletten"

Opletten(op-letten) is best translated with " paying attention"

"pay (close) attention in/during class" - let (goed) op tijdens de les.

The verb splits up...

The variations in English you mention, are almost identical in Dutch:

WARNING - waarschuwing!

CAUTION - Voorzichtig!

Look out! - Kijk uit! (as you yell when your child crosses the street and forgets to wait and look left, right, left...)

Danger - Gevaar!

I think "opletten" (ie LET OP!) is frequently used in Dutch... But in case of: "Watch it, pal!!", is best translated as "Pas op/kijk uit, vriend!!" - oppassen -- another composite verb...

But of course in English "Watching+..." has a variety of use... like - watch out, watch your step, watch it, stopwatch... hehe (what am I getting myself into this time...)

Maybe I should consider teaching proper Dutch to 6-10 year olds-- I like to teach kids stuff, be it math or a language or a ballsport or music...

Btw One of the scholars leading the protests here voiced his opinion (surprisingly - was it <dakkie>?) in a most eloquent and humorous manner at a prime-time TV-magazine... When asked by the host: "We will surely see you in the future as a secretary or minister of Education, eh?", he said: "No, thank you very much."

I like that kid...

Nov-26-07  achieve: Psssht - I forgot to mention that the official warning sign (eg at a construction site): <LOOK OUT - DANGER>

...is best (officially) translated as: <<> PAS OP! GEVAAR! >

"Schuift dit nog wat?" (Do i get any cash for this?)

heh - it's 5 AM - I'm out.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> hip horrahe!

Thanks for the CASSOWARY.

I just found it tonight.

Yes I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to read the "screenplay" (heh) of the play you saw.

It sounds tasty, to say the least. If you can find a way to "e-mule" it to me it would be amazing.

I'm mulling over a reply to a few of the points in your <giant Moa>...

I'm only a <flightless bird> away, thanks to the miracle of the <Inner Net> and this so-called "power grid."

Aroooo

randallbsmith: <Well, to be too easy for a Monday, it would indeed have to be easier than the easiest, but it is Monday, and this is the Monday puzzle, so to be too easy would therefore mean this puzzle is easier than itself. But then, this one, oddly, is so easy that it almost IS easier than itself, or as close as you can get to being easier than yourself without going into the realm of such logical contradiction as to bring Everything to a crashing ruin. Now, why are you reading this you may wonder? It is not your fault. This comment started out on a weak note, then slowly got nowhere. How could you know it would degrade to general drivel without actually reading to the end? I apologize. If it is any consolation, I, as I write, am discovering the same sense of acute disappointment.>

First ever post by <Randall> on CG, at the Monday Puzzle...

LMAO!

  Domdaniel: <useful stuff>

Aepyornis = big extinct flightless Madagascar bird

Allotheism = the worship of other people's gods

Allovestitism = the wearing of other people's clothes

Kiwi fruit, in French = souris vegetal, 'vegetable mouse'.

*warning: I may have invented some of these*

Domdaniel: <Jess> And a very emucational aepyornis it is too, thank you. For what it's worth, I think the first missive was a form letter (I got an identical one), but the second... the second was something else.

Are they allowed to use words like "privy"? Disgusting, I calls it.

Will respond in <due> [*holds up two fingers*] course. Whatever that means.

<Hey, is this my 7500th? utterance> Utterly cool. Three whole quarters of the way to 10k already, and it's only the middle of Merdre, A.P.

Domdaniel: <Niels> Before we leave "Let op/ Opletten" does the same 'splitting' occur with the Dutch verb meaning to resign a game of chess? (Which I seem to have forgotten... it's been a while since my <Last Resignation in Amsterdam>.

But I *have* resigned (games) in Scandinavia, where they have the same type of duality (opgivet/ gev opp) in Denmark and Sweden.

"I give up" seems to have extra resonances in English. Or maybe I'm just better at spotting them.

Domdaniel: <Deffi> This so-called Najdorf ... a Polish Jewish Argentinian Sicilian? Sounds like an extremely dangerous man.

Hold on, I think I've just invented a whole new genre of joke. They go like this:

"So there were these three Indians named Nimzo, Bogo, and Queens, and Bogo said to Nimzo "Why does Queens think he's a New Yorker...?"

Arg. I'm certain somebody can do better.

Domdaniel: <Deffi> It works! Magic! I think "Indian Defences" and there you are.

The Dutch works pretty well too, by the way. Don't tell anyone, but I'm still using a book by Robert Bellin published in the 1970s.

Open Defence: <Dom> fancy some egg and tomatoes ?
Nov-28-07
Premium Chessgames Member
  Domdaniel: <Deffi> Er, yes please.

Usually, round here, the egg is on my face. Causing a tomatoesque and rubicund blush.

"So there were three Irishmen named Paddy O'Nimzo, Paddy O'Bogo, and Paddy O'Queens. Which one wears the cowboy hat ... ?"

Argh. Who'm I gonna insult next ...?

Domdaniel: <I fart Pepper> was one of the funniest newspaper headlines of all time. It was a piece about jazz musician Art Pepper that was supposed to begin "If Art Pepper..." then shift to a lower font size (a trendy typographic device in the 1980s). But they messed it up, with a big 'I' and a mis-aligned 'f'.

And I've just found one to rival it. In, of all places, a Latin dictionary. While looking up <haruspex> or <haruspices>, a kind of visionary or seer who used entrails as his gimmick.

"<haruspicinus> adj of divination by entrails -- f art of such divination."

Stonehenge: <I fart Pepper> Better despice that.
Nov-28-07

Domdaniel: <if art pepper> You can do strange things to the meaning just by moving the space around. I once tried to describe a movie as "a noirish thriller" but somebody 'corrected' it to "an Oirish thriller".

As if.

Which is also, for some obscure reason, the title of a birdcage full of marble sugarcubes, made by our old pal Marcel Duchamp.
