 | | OhioChessFan: So anyway, at work this week, several people were discussing a crossword puzzle. One of the answers was "ampersand". One said to me, "Did you know what an ampersand is?" I replied, "Of course. I even wrote a song about the ampersand." They both looked at me like...........well, you know how they looked. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: oh congrats on 75,000,000 postings as well!
I believe that breaks the record postings established in 1980 by an amphetamine-crazed legion of <Buzzcocks> fans who fairly plastered all of <Manchester> with posters in support of their famous "broken bottles all over the stage" appearence at <Old Trafford>. Signed,
Still Thinking about the <Ian Curtis> film I watched last week. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Yo <Stony> why don't you open a forum so I can litter your <menhirs> with inane leaflets? I mean really. |
|
| Nov-29-07 | | achieve: <Dom> Yes, you are correct. To resign or to give up = opgeven, in Dotsch... The verb invariably splits up in just about all tenses... Whoever - We resigned all our postponed games = Wij hebben al onze uitgestelde partijen < opgegeven >... I now understand why foreigners have a little trouble with our verbs. Funny sidenote:
To *throw* up = *over*geven
(*please* don't ask me to explain - I might throw over etc. etc.) |
|
| Nov-29-07 | | achieve: Funny line by Dutch comedian <Dolf Jansen> that cracked me up last night... "After 300 years of inbreeding, the Urker man choir have finally achieved to sing in perfect harmony." |

 | | Domdaniel: <Example of genuine Irish joke> Q. Why is the farmer so successful?
A. Because he is out standing in his field.
<sigh. cracks op.> |
|
| Nov-29-07 | | achieve: hehe...
That must be one of the funniest short Q&As I've ever heard... |
|
Nov-29-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> You're too modest -- you shoulda said you wrote the greatest of all <ampersand songs>, much better than such efforts as the Beatles ("I Want to Hold your Ampersand"). Or even, dare I say:
<Since my comma left me
I found a new space to dwell
Down at the end of Colon Street
Ampersand Hotel>
Which must be the same place as "A lost weekend in a hotel in Ampersand". That's gr& & d&y. |

And throw away 25 bucks which I can spend on beer and gambling? Are you normal at all, woman? No, I'd rather be a parasite. Ah, parasites! This brings me to a very important question. Years ago, I watched this film and now I want to know it's title. I have only two clues: one of the (main?) characters is an albino. And I remember this conversation between a teacher and one of her pupils:
Q. Does anyone know what the Queen is?
A. The Queen is a parasite.
Q. WHAT did you say??
A. The Queen is a parasite, mum.
I've forgotten the title of this film and I wanna know it! It's very important to me! Well, not really, ...er, come to think of it, I don't really give a toss. |
|
Nov-29-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Stony> As a matter of fact, I know the name of that film. It is <Top Gun> with Tom Cruise as the albino and Peter O'Toole as the Queen. Look for Peter Schaffer's brief cameo as a wastepaper basket! <Dom>: Wotcha, mate. Regards,

| Nov-29-07 | | achieve: Reading comments on YouTube gives an idea of some other shortcuts in spelling: One day you'll master the ba6 in this gr8 game that is called chess... It looks awful, doesn't it?
<Dom>-< ...much better than such efforts as the Beatles ("I Want to Hold your Ampersand").> heh -- ♕ Another beautiful song, made famous by one of our best ever singers/comedians/entertainers, Wim Sonneveld: "Aan de Amsterdamse gr8en, heb ik heel mijn hart voor altijd verp@ ..." -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pqr4... (I agree that this version is a bit lame or old-fashioned, but still I think it has a nice swaying, waltz-like feel about it -- Ok Niels, that's enough... Move along now) |
|
| Nov-29-07 | | achieve: One more... This is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written in dutch... Wim Sonneveld -- 'Het Dorp'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxPL... Sonneveld's stylish pronounciation of the Dutch language is a thing of beauty in itself -- you rarely encounter it like that these days. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Great song -- I'm guessing it's one of those childhood-so-far-away, but-I-remember, all-the-children-in-school, and-their-parents-working, and everyone-was-nice, but now I'm surrounded by plastic and life is crap except in that little town in my memory where perfection lingers? Or something like that. There's even a Knight/ Springer near the end. |
|
| Nov-29-07 | | achieve: You nailed it <Dom>. Those childhood memories that have lost some of their magic, it seems, but are still there-if-ur-willing-to-look-for-it kinda crap... heh You must have recognized the word "melancholique", right? I knew it- not much escapes you. We now spell it "melancholiek".
But Sonneveld had a great voice.
He actually introduced a lof words and figures of speach into Dutch conversation and vocabulary... More than any other of our three big cabaretiers. It was actually just before my time, I guess, but people were sadio listeners in the 50s and in the 60s the shows on telly by Sonneveld and Toon Hermans were a real treat... My good old mother still uses all their expressions but is looked at rather funny by the younger generation... I was infected by her in that respect. Where were we?
13...d5?
Does it almost equalise?
|
|
Nov-29-07
 | | OhioChessFan: Actually, the Beatle's best was & I Love Her. The Spinners had a great one with & Then Came You. |
|
Nov-29-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> I imagine those <sadio listeners> would be pretty melancholiek, ja. Sad songs only broadcast, was it? Unless it was radio for sadists... (Sorry ...) |
|
| Nov-29-07 | | achieve: <Dom> Before I can literally go under cover with a clean conscience, I must rectify this: <You must have recognized the word "melancholique", right?> That was a bit harsh... You actually picked up quite a lot from that short clip, I have to acknowledge that in all fairness. The 13...d5 reference was from Jess' game we both analysed and I put something on that in Jess' forum... some days ago already... I think Jess could have lost quite a bit of her advantage from the opening-- (the game where you mentioned 23.d5 as a crusher for White...)-- if Black had played 13...d5. PS. Good luck in case you're playing a Clubbe game tomorrow. |
|
| Nov-29-07 | | achieve: PS. <Dom> I made a few HORRENDOUS spelling mistakes, and was so naive to hope that they would go unnoticed- or at least unpunished... How foolish... (ouch...)
Welterusten, meneer Domdaniel. |

Re. my typos -- there is a perfectly simple explanation for my typos of late -- I had to buy a new "all Black" keyboard a few days ago- and since I can not type blindfolded- I feel not at home at all with my new all black... I called several stores and it seems the light-squared keyboards are "out of fashion" - I am not kidding... I WAS LEFT NO CHOICE... So I mumbled a few smothererd @#$#@s and had to take home the Black one... So if I do not triple check my posts I will continue to typo - a bit like Bill- and he doesn't seem to bother too much so I hope this will pass with time... Best,
Niels |
|
Nov-30-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Hmm, interesting. My new keyboard is black as well, but I hadn't really noticed the difference until now. I must be intrinsically fashionable, or something. Heh. Don't worry about typos. I tend to regard them as beautiful accidents, magnificently surreal irruptions from the subconscious. Except in the case of certain idiots who act as if spelling doesn't matter at all... and you're so clearly not one of those. Innaresting ... this new Vista system can run spellchecks on CG posts, among other things. I just tried it for the first time -- it queried 'hmm' and 'heh' and had a fit over 'innaresting'. Can't have that. Back to whence ye came, demonic pedantic software! |
|
| Nov-30-07 | | achieve: HEH - You're SO right!!! I already knew I was a "retro-guy" in some aspects- and reluctant to changes, how small they may seem... I used to do the laundry by hand and then put it in a 2,000 turns per second 29 year old <centrifuge> - then take it out and whipped it in the air *sweesh-klabam* and after an hour all folded in the closet - but now I have this fancy dryer that makes a lot of noise and... and... I'm with you man -- all the demonic software I kick out as soon as I notice it... No cookies, tracers - Nothing!! - I know the important info from memory, anyway... *Check for typos... - OK - SEND* |
|
Nov-30-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Yep, as long as our memory circuits keep working, we'll be ... uhh, what was I saying? Am I here? |
|
Nov-30-07
 | | Domdaniel: Right, yes ... I've lost the URL, of course, but if you go to YouTube and run a search for "Cale thoughtless" you should find a superb clip of Mr John Cale singing 'Thoughtless Kind'. "If you grow tired of the friends you have ... never, ever turn your back on them ... we dress conservatively at the best of times ... prefer the shadows to the bright lights in your eyes ... like the scars of imagination ..." One of the great man's best songs, I think. |
