|
Dec-12-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> You think 'qua' is bad? Trying putting 'quaquaversal' in a film review sometime... |
|
| Dec-12-07 | | WBP: <Dom> <Jess> <Anyone else> Speaking of movies, have you seen No Country For Old Men? It's very gripping and powerful, but what's really intersting is that Javiar Bardem's makeup/wig/etc. make him look exactly like a photograph of Chicago mobster Joey "The Clown" Lombardo taken sometime in the '70s or '80s. I can't find it online, but it's in several books I have. I believe it's a mug shot Instead of his usually huge grin, he sports a truly frightening scowl. Perhaps some of our more online-saavy types can find the photo. |
|
Dec-12-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Bill> I've seen neither the movie nor the mugshot ... is there an optimal order in which to tackle them? I haven't read any Cormac McCarthy books either: it's a big blind spot. |

 | | Domdaniel: "Then all at once among the bottles/
A host of golden axolotls."
Wordsworth got us into trouble before, he can do it again. I use the term 'us' advisedly... |

Dec-12-07
 | | Open Defence: <Domdaniel> you have sold out.. you have been nominated for a dreaded <Caissar> |
|
Dec-12-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Deffi> That's Niels's doing, trying to make a respectabubble citizen out of me. Some hope. It happened last year too, and I finished nowhere -- so I reckon I'm safe from having to make speeches that go *I'd like to thank my* ... <bursts into tears> *my, my... gosh I lurv all of you little people so much* blah blah blah. |
|
| Dec-12-07 | | achieve: <Mr. Dd> Hey, relax man! I happen to be one of the few who recognize your vital place within cg.com and mystic powers and boundless creative energy that keeps us alert, on our toes- and at the same time comfortable and relaxed! (KK at ease Niels - just remember it is an "Irish thing"..) PS. Good to see you again after the (technical) disturbances. |
|
| Dec-12-07 | | achieve: PPS. <I happen to be one of the few who recognize ... > That looks to be a grammar/spelling mistake... I think it should be "recognizes" *including* the "s"... Though I am not quite sure... yet... (linking the verb to "one" or "the few"...) |
|
Dec-12-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: I nominated you also, but for which cagtegory I can't remember... I think it was <Mr. congeniality>, but it may have been <the swimsuit competition>... |
|
| Dec-13-07 | | achieve: OK - for the record --
Actually I'm not that into "Top 10" and "best (ever)" lists that have irritated me over the last few years because of the amount- and pointlessness of it in magazines, papers and on Dutch TV (literally lurking in almost EVERY TV-show --- and it didn't stop after the turn of the millennium..) - it's just names-dropping of the celebs most of the time and some other stuff... but I succumbed to *some* sort of urge to participate after seeing <brankat> and <Deffi> post their lists. People seem very into best ever lists, TPRs, other rankers (betting) and comparisons- and statistics in all shapes and forms. I thought I was not one of "them" -- heh... until a few days ago... But I guess it can be fun in a way, just not sure yet *which* way... When I have respect for someone's efforts and talents, I usually just go up and tell them -- No big fuzz or award shows... But to (yet again) use one of Jessica's catch phrases: "I may be barking mad!"
|
|
Dec-13-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Heh we share your <pain and fun>, Niels I'm sure... My favorite "ranker" of all time, of course, is the <Monkey ranker> in <YouRang> prediction contests. I think the <Monkey> is a genius. Regards,

 | | Domdaniel: ... and, yes, rudely and churlishly rejecting compliments *is* an Irish thing. I really should try to be less transparently ethnic. So, anyway, it's 5.00am, my broadband is humming again, so far, and ready for that Live Broadcast Page thang... Oh-oh. 5am USA East Coast time? And, like, 10am Yurp time? So I can go back to sleep for 5 hours? Okay, three. Is this Thursday? Am I here? |

Dec-13-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: heh tonight should be a <corker> of a draw-- All the usual idiots will be there, including the founding editors of <MAD Magazine>, although they are all deceased. I've got Trolls on ignore and I'm ready to roll!!!
Only one and a half hours to blastoff.
<Kamka> wins, you heard it here first. Regards,

| Dec-13-07 | | twinlark: <Dom>
See Joe's place. |
|
| Dec-13-07 | | WBP: Hey <Dom>. Not sure, to answer your question. The movie is truly very violent and powerful 9with a healthy dose of good old black humor folded in). I've read all his books except two, and NCFOM is one of those two, so I don't really know how the film and book differ (though I'm guessing the Tommy Lee Jones character has a bigger presence in the book). Hey, if I had a nickel for every blind reading spot I have, I'd be firing Donald trump. I am finally working my way through A Thousand Plateaus, and am very impressed by it. But I'm also enjoying it immensely--I can't wait to get back to it whenever I'm away from it (honest!). Very entertaining. |

Dec-13-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Hyde, Bolus & Aaargh> Why, I wonder, did I post a 'humorous comment' on this game between Lasker and 3 opponents, when the solution to the current puzzle, Lasker vs 2 opponents, lay about 2 mins search away? I'm an airhead, is why, prob'ly. What was the question again? <Bill> After '1000 Plateaux' try 'The Italian Wedding Fake Book' by Deleuze & Guattari. A Pynchon jest, whatever that is. My punishment for this joke: right now some cretin is doing a heavy metal version of 'Figaro' outside my window. Wonder if I can throw a dagger from here ... |
|
| Dec-13-07 | | WBP: <Dom> Ha! Yeah, 1000 Plateax does have a Pynchon-esque aspect to it. (Curious: in which Pynchon book are D & G alluded to? I know, don't end a sentence in a preposition.) Ah bravo Figaro! |
|
Dec-14-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Isn't the correct term <Pynchonianesqueness>? I don't want to quibble... |
|
Dec-14-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Bill> Vineland. Punk band at mafia wedding scene. Somebody saves their collective ass with a copy of the D & G songbook... |
|
| Dec-14-07 | | WBP: <Dom> Gracias.
<Curious: in which Pynchon book are D & G alluded to?> Possibly the most dreadfully phrased utterance ever posted on Chessgames.com. ("Curious: in which Pynchon book is the D & G allusion?" Or simply "Where does Pynchon make the D & G allusion?" Etc.) And to add insult to injury, in this case the problem's not a typo. |
|
| Dec-14-07 | | achieve: <Bill> Would you please stop whining? We both know very well that you're a schmuck when it comes to writing in the English Language... Err... and thank you for stopping by at my place-- I left a note at yours sporting a somewhat friendlier tone. Arooo!! |
|
Dec-15-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <will you please stop whining> Heh...
<Niels v Bill III>: the "thrilla in Manila" Get your tickets now!!
By the way if we're going to have a "whining contest" I want to play too!! Regards,

| Dec-15-07 | | mack: Afternoon chaps. Just come back from doing a heavy metal version of Figaro in the streets of Ireland. All for charity, of course. Some lunatic clearly wasn't in the festive spirit though, and lobbed a dagger at me. |
|
Dec-15-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <mack>! I nominated you for <best profile> in the prestigious <mannbee> awards. I also left you a new <Batchimeg at the Movies> in your forum |
