   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Meanwhile <chessnet> was wondering whether I had anything better to do in life.

The answer is: yes, possibly, but this is more fun. And it depends what you mean by 'better'.

I'm not bitter, buster.

Domdaniel: <Frogspawn> Will come up with something somehow related to chess soon, just to keep our license.

Didn't Nigel 'B is for Bonecrusher' Short do well in the arm-wrestling section at Wijk aan Zee?

jessicafischerqueen: Yes, that miserable little git <Fish N' Cheps> seems to have galvanized Kurtz into a comeback of sorts.

Well I found myself cheering for him. Maybe I'll email him again.

OK, since there don't appear to be any "rules" to the contest, I'm plugging <Lennie> into the algorithm.

13 more to go then...

Thanks so much for keeping me company <Dom>!!

This project has accidentally blown all out of proportion, but I'm actually learning about a bunch of stuff I didn't know about.

Heh. Be sure to check out the YouTube link I posted for <Major Clem Snide>... <mack> really does have excellent taste.

jessicafischerqueen: I finished!! THIRTY FIVE biographies. Remind me never to do this again.

Unsurprisingly, according to the voting and the <Sonny Barger> chess algorithm, you came in at NUMBER TWO and Bob came in at NUMBER ONE.

Nice company you keep, my dearest <Dom>.

Couldn't have done it without you.

jessicafischerqueen: HI <Dom> what in the world are you doing up at 4:30 in the morning?

As always, if there are any "inaccuracies" in your segment, just dash off a quick monograph to the fine journal <Notes and Queries>--

(real journal devoted to "correcting, quibbling, and haranguing")

jessicafischerqueen: oh be sure to check out "your" video if you haven't-- It had me busting a gut, but that may have to do with exhaustion.

But I mean what are the odds???

Domdaniel: "My name is Clem Snide. I am a private ass. Whole ... etc"

Hic. I have a video? Let's see ...

Open Defence: <Didn't Nigel 'B is for Bonecrusher' Short do well in the arm-wrestling section at Wijk aan Zee?> Yes it's also a new FIDE LAW to "Shake well before use" apparently.. and all this rushing off to the rest rooms... disgusting... to say the least
Jan-28-08

Open Defence: If this forum does not get closed down for that I might risk posting that on Short's page.... or maybe Cheparinov's

Domdaniel: Did you say *fifty* pee? Disgusting ... to say the least. As His Bobness nearly sang ...

"May you build a bladder to the stars
And tell us if it hurts
And may you stay
Forever Kurtz."

Open Defence: actually that would be a good pun for the Short - Cheparinov game..

jessicafischerqueen: So THIS is where the party went.

Heh... somebody said "pence."

Actually I'm still having a hard time "digesting" this:

<"Beefy Dom: Dom Daniel Gaunt on the Wing.">

Perfect name for a <Steak N' Chicken> Restaurant?

It's currently my favorite <YouTube> video, if only for all the foul language in Irish/Australian accents.

Domdaniel: <Jess> -- Re <Dom Daniel Gaunt> -- Yes, indeed, I can be Craggy (as in Island) from a certain angle. And I'm related to John o' Gaunt on one side and John o' Groats on another. On the third side I'm El Hombre Invisible, descended mainly from stoats, weasels, and white male mathematicians. That enough Anne Cesstry for ya?

"Ballad of a Thin Man"

There ought to be a law against me coming around.

Domdaniel: <Frogspawn> offers its humble (shurely shome mishtake?) congratulations to *Player of the Day* Ray Keene. Top of the world, Mondo!

Plus 21st place in the Jessican Catalog of Coolth. Quite gratifying, we imagine.

Jan-29-08  achieve: <Keene> is a class act, I agree.

Hey <Dom> you must have been mightily relieved, eh, that you came in second at the Coolth Catalog-- you over confident son of a hibernian gun!

Thanks for that Guinness the other day-- Btw Portisch too had a great sense of humor... He and Sosonko were analysing/explaining and most of the time Portisch just said: "A goes B goes C, then take take take take Draw. (on the Anand-Kramnik game)-- Really sharp and fast insight, still.

Watching Korchnoi and Portisch reluctantly having put on a audio head-set mic was an event in itself -- they shouldn't do that to these Eminences Grises of Chess, should they? Just give them a hand-held microphone.

Btw the "girls" are the ones keeping our forums running, going by the last few pages... (I'm not complaining)

Domdaniel: <Niels> Yes, the "girls" certainly have all the necessary housekeeping skills. Why, the place would collapse without them.

I think Jessica also said it was vital to keep garden implements nice and tidy -- something about "keeping hoes in line"??

Jan-29-08  achieve: Right <Dom>, and since you came in number two in that category, it seems logical that you keep the hoes in line, and I attend to the aquaducti hortii...
Jan-29-08
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: Aquaducti <Vlastimil> Hortii? Don't tell me he was there as well as Korchnoi & co.
Jan-29-08  achieve: As Dominus as my witness, no.

If Vlastimil was scheduled for commentary at a tourney. I not go there. Period.

I saw him in the eighties on German TV with <Helmut Pfleger> as the lead moderator... Those two could bore you to death...

In Vlastimil Hortus Mortus est --

*Yuck*

Korchnoi & co belong right there with you at the coolth list- I hope sincerely we agree on that one.

Jan-29-08  achieve: search "korchnoi v pfleger"

Say it ain't so...

Well, Pfleger's ZDF coverage on German TV of the Big K-K matches and some super tourneys were quite good, chessically, but lacked any sort of flair.

But I did watch them, I have to admit. Pfleger und Hort.

Domdaniel: <Niels> Witness? Hmm, I dunno. But I could be *witless*.

I agree about Vik the K, of course. I had the chance to play him in a simul once, but I didn't. Which was stupid.

Hort, shall we say, is Short without the 'S'-appeal ...
