Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi Ho!

<Niels> thanks for the bio link- and the opportunity to say publicly that it is <me> who whines the most about losing, and really I don't like that in myself.

I'd also like to make clear that it's the chessplayer'S whining, not the chessplayers themselves, that I dislike.

All that said, here is some conrcete proof.

I lost in <ten> count 'em- ten-- moves today, whined, then had a nap, dreamt about whining, and then just woke up.

<WHINE>

Stupid chess game.

<DOM> don't let them get you down. Also, <whining in advance> is cool. You don't hear <Roger Waters> apologizing for <whining in advance>.

More on this later...

Is this from the torrid world of oversexed, overheated <Fanzines>?

NO

It's from the torrid world of oversexed, overheated <Zoological reporting>:

<"It is the first new species of <<<giant elephant-shrew>>> to be discovered in more than 126 years. From the moment I first lifted one of the animals into our photography tent, I knew it must be a new species -- not just because of its distinct colouring, but because it was so heavy!"

Domdaniel: Mornin', <Jess>. Sorry, yer maj. You may be the ultimate arbiter of coolth, but I'll whine nae more. I'll go no more a whining, in, the, PALE, MOOn, light. Ah, that's better.

Here's a topical problem for you. When His Bobness sang "My love laughs like the flowers, Valentines can't buy her" was he (a) expressing his admiration for a remarkable woman, or (b) coming up with a typical male whiny excuse to avoid spending money on the 'chick' in question?

Answers before Feb 14, if poss.

Domdaniel: <Deffi> Ta ... I've been taking cover from funda- (and other) -mentalists ever since they invented cover. Long time, anyhow.

And they couldn't hit a barn door at this dist------

Jan-31-08  achieve: (c) I want to whine about the Fab 14 deadline

(d) I think (b) is prob. the right answer

(e) <Dom> Did you just attempted *singing*, for a moment?

(f) Well, OK

(g) I like the alphabetical listing

(h) as you can probably tell

(i) I'll stop here, for obvious reasons

Domdaniel: <The Advance Variation of the Whine> sounds like a perfect Frogspawn topic. Add it to the curriculum, prof.

We do *have* a curriculum, don't we? Somewhere? Or was that, ahem, Forum University Carlsen Kramnik?

Domdaniel: <Niels> I'll answer the easy one first. Did I attempt "singing" for a moment?

No. Not out loud. Strictly via a keyboard simulation. The actual sound emitted would be too horrible for words.

Domdaniel: <Jess> A great vid from the Neilster Youngster ... ole Zuma shows his Sensa Yuma *and* does a harmonica striptease *and* one of the great tuning-mah-guitar episodes (Niels would know the details ... it all looks and sounds like guitar-tuning to me ...)

Damn hippies. Putting that LDS stuff on their cornflakes and writing weird lyrics.

Maybe they're not 'lorries' rolling by, but *lawries* -- as in *The Mighty Saint Lawrie*?

Domdaniel: <Vast Cultural Gaps, #137> I have never watched even one episode of Blackadder. As far as I remember. And by all accounts, if I had, I would.

How do I get by? The usual way. Bluff.

Jan-31-08  achieve: <Dom> <it all looks and sounds like guitar-tuning to me ...)>

Better yet, it's D-STRING tuning, right there, uncensored!

In case of G-string tuning, we call it "fondling"

Honest though, the first thing I thought of when Neil played the test chord, was to "please tune that A- or D-string!" - blessing and curse - these ears - and Neil of course gets it right with one turn...

Domdaniel: How cool is this? Not only does Jacques Brel write songs about it -- as sung by everyone from Scott Walker to David Bowie -- but City of Amsterdam even has its own page and games collection on CG.

Is this where <Niels> gets the coolth from, not to mention <ineffable musicality>?

And where has Amsterdam been since 1918 when the games mysteriously stop?

Jan-31-08  achieve: <Dom> Very interesting link you found there... "We" only lost to Krappy Krefeld, in a Duch N.B., and one to Marseille Muffins, the rest we won...

Hmmm... have to do some more innavestagatin...

For a wealth of games played in Holland visit DutchBase via the link in my profile (all downloadable- if that's a word)

Domdaniel: For example ... once you get past some dubious opening moves by both sides (in the Dutch Defence, yet -- I guess they're entitled to do it their way) then Amsterdam vs Krefeld, 1855 turns into an enthralling struggle. Krefeld won this one, but Amsterdam got revenge in a rematch.

And these cities didn't have "chess engines" at their disposal either ... (though I'm a bit suspicious about Krefeld ... I mean, Krefeld?)

Domdaniel: <Deffi> That was then, this is now. And that was there, this is here. See? It's simple, really.

Mark my words, they'll be 'reviving' the 1990s next. We may not even make it out of the Noughties before they start being recycled too.
