Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: And I'm Ph-neutral. It must be all that acid.
Jun-24-09  Trigonometrist:

<Jess>,you naughty traitor,it was you who suggested that <Dom> be sacked to the <Moon Goddess>...

So the group that's after my head is a different one;the TAL(Trigonometrist Assassination League)...

Okay..so <Dom> want to come over to the Gobi...no,no nomads sacrifice only females...Yeah let's queennap <Jess> as well and turn her over so that she may be sacrificed to the Sun-God...

Nomads love Queen sacs...:)

Domdaniel: I'm still on Triceratops's ignore list, after all this time. He may be a dinosaur with a pea-sized brain, but he has the memory of a mammal.

The Ignoration, needless to say, is not reciprocal. I wouldn't do that to a fellow creature.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Nothing is real>

Not so!

I refer you to the last line of <Tears of Rage>-

"And life, is, real..."

Although in your defence-- the noted New York literary critic <George Steiner> *did* launch a controversial theory explaining that in this particular lyric, Bob Dylan was referring to the popular "Life" brand breakfast cereal.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Trig> No, no-

Well OK yes but originally it <was> Deffi who made the suggestion.

It's just that I keep bringing it up all the time because when she originally threatned to execute <Dom> to the Moon Goddess- over a year ago now-- I laughed so hard I threw up.

Do you know that in Korea they say "obite" for throwing up?

That's a <Konglish> word.

"over the things you use to bite with"

Obite.

Sigh

Jun-25-09  achieve: <JFQ: Sigh>

Well, counting proved too difficult, but "<Trigo>" *should* be able to determine the "angle" to which extent cette livre est ouvrée, hmm?

Domdaniel: Should we ban all trigonometry, cos it's sinful?
Jun-25-09  achieve: I wanted to do a number game with my little cosin the other day, but my aunt told me that that's where she had to draw the tangential line...

Well...

Jun-25-09  Trigonometrist: <achieve>

Firstly, "livre" is masculine in essence so the phrase should be "ce livre" and not "cette livre"...

Furthermore, Puisque le livre qui est ouvre n'est pas moi, je ne peux pas mesurer l'angle que vous desirez...

<Jess>

Come now <J>, am I not allowed some curiosity when I'm somewhere in the Gobi desert evading the TAL?...:)

Jun-25-09  achieve: <Trig> I was mangling my french, but yours shirley isn't!!

Incroyable, how you put me in my place there... And of course, as a former french student, one of the first things we learned was that it is LE livre, not "La".

<le livre qui est ouvree n'est pas moi> Must use a different personal noun there...

:)

;-P

(Dom despises l'usage de smileyzz, but I felt I had to in this case, heh)

Jun-25-09  Trigonometrist:

<<le livre qui est ouvree n'est pas moi> Must use a different personal noun there...>

You're absolutely right...

Which one is it?..."mienne"?

I'm not spectacular at French...As I stated earlier, I'm phphobic...

Jun-25-09  achieve: <Which one is it?..."mienne"?> heh - good one... I'd have to look that up, to be honest, or you could rearrange the syntax, well, maybe just "mon propriété" suffices...

But I'd too like to know if there is one worder to translate 'mine' ...

<As I stated earlier, I'm phphobic...> In that case you're holding yourself together remarkably well!!

(heh)

Jun-25-09  Trigonometrist: <achieve>

Yep I think it's "mien"...

Check out this translation service..It's cool for rusty learners like myself...:

I love French and french mathemati<ciennes> more...heh..

Domdaniel: Le livre -- livre de classe ou livre d'echecs -- est un 'book'. Mais la livre est une mesure.

A measure, in fact, which gains weight in the journey from *La France* to Canada. It's a pound in one and half a kilo in the other.

Moral: overlook 'cette livre' and you may find yourself implying that a lady of Canadian extraction has put on weight.

Not the sort of thing a gentleman says, you know?

Jun-25-09  achieve: Thanks, I bookmarked it right away. Funny but I never encountered 'mien' or 'mienne(s)' before for some inexplicable reason... Good one!

Pas mal pour un "garçon beta"!

Jun-25-09  Trigonometrist: Hey <Dom>..What's <echecs>?

I asked some of my nomad friends but they didn't have an answer...:(

<achieve>

You're welcome...I admit that I find it peculiar that you have never come accross "mien",it being a common word...

I studied the tenses but most elude my grasp now...:)

Jun-25-09  achieve: <Trig> Peculiar perhaps, but true; I haven't "read" much in french for ages...

<d'Eschecs> I'm sure you know about FIDE

= Federation Internationale De ...

You got it now.

Less common than 'mien', admitted!

Jun-25-09  achieve: PS - related:

In Dutch language (those with some good education, pre 1985) we call something an "echec" when something has gone terribly wrong, and it happened in the public eye...

Jun-25-09  Trigonometrist: <achieve>

I can recogonize neither head or tail of Dutch language...

And I never bothered to find out the full form of FIDE...

Looks like something is "echec" with me..:)

Jun-25-09  achieve: I believe so... ;)

Dutch has quite a few french words in it, and with the parallel explanation of Eschec, I tried to shed light on its back-ground, but agreed, Dutch is very hard for foreigners, and we speak English French and German quite well, traditionally, though by now I can drop the last two; and Dutch itself is going downhill fast too.

Jun-25-09  Trigonometrist: So Dutch is more difficult than French?
