 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> -- <diehard romanticism with a mask of a virtually unaccountable obsession with 18th century English land reform> I'm looking forward to the movie starring Bruce Willis, with songs by J. Tull and Genesis. A new York cop finds himself in Olde Englande (hey, it worked for Mark Twain) and looks around for terrorists, exploding tall buildings, machines full of celebs, etc. Can't find any, so he foils a plot to run down members of parliament with steam engines. The bad guys off one MP by locomotive, but then Bruce gets to work, intercepting their pigeon messages and blowing up London during a carriage chase. - He has a badge, Sirrah, purporting to give him status as a sort of thief-taker in the colonies. - Piffle, man. They're *all* criminals in the colonies. *Keats & Chapman: Die Hard with a Homer* |

 | | Domdaniel: It's almost funny. There are about 900 people on average currently logged into CG. Those are good odds for any competition. I've won prizes in comps -- lotteries, quizzes, games of not-quite-chance -- which had tens of thousands of entrants. Why is everyone here so damn smart?
The next phase is to construct a device to harness this genius energy, and offer it for hire to needy GMs and the like. |
|
| Dec-18-09 | | Jim Bartle: "I'm looking forward to the movie starring Bruce Willis..." Not something I could ever imagine saying. |
|
Dec-18-09
 | | Domdaniel: <Jim B> Let me rephrase that slightly. I'm looking forward to the *existence* of such a movie. I didn't say that I was actually looking forward to *seeing* it. |
|
| Dec-18-09 | | Jim Bartle: Interesting distinction!
Not that it's the same thing, but I remember this exchange from "Love and Death": Woody: Sonja, are you scared of dying?
Diane: Scared is the wrong word. I'm frightened of it.
Woody: That's an interesting distinction. |

 | | Domdaniel: I'm planning my *next* chess comeback for January 15th, at the annual Mulcahy tournament in Cork, Ireland. Two years ago, I played like a complete idiot and dropped 100 rating points. Last year I started well with 2.5/3, but then we were all evacuated from the building due to storm damage, and I promptly lost two games in the new venue. This time I'll be ready -- new chessy T-shirt, new chessy glasses, new *cheesy* grin ... that should terrify anyone. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jim B> There's a chain of movie associations in there somewhere. Woody Allen imitated Bergman, who made The Seventh Seal, in which Max von Sydow's Knight plays chess with death. Subtracting one, we reach The Sixth Whatever, starring Bruce Willis vs Death. Or was that The 5th Element? The 4th Man, by Veerhoven? Never mind. Even chess, Woody and Willis are linked in movie space. 'The Sixth Whatever'?
Exactly. Whatever. |

| Dec-18-09 | | Jim Bartle: The knock on Tiger Woods as an "athlete" is OK, but otherwise, I really question his choices. Why would he choose Serena Williams over Roger Federer? His accomplishments exceed hers on every level. And Ronaldinho was/is an excellent player, but doesn't really stand out above a number of other players. And he didn't particularly shine in the World Cup. In 2002 when Brazil won, he wasn't the dominant guy (I don't think), and he didn't do anything special in 2006. And he tosses out Lance Armstrong purely on rumors, nothing more. |
|
Dec-18-09
 | | Domdaniel: Tiger tosses Lance? Isn't that taking erotomania to a new cyclic level? I refuse to believe it.
Admittedly, I refuse to believe anything. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Have you noticed that <Aqualung my friend, don't you start away uneasy, you poor old sod, don't you see it's only me?> is an anagram of <Aqualung my friend, don't you start away uneasy, you poor old sod, don't you see Tony Miles?> Hmm... I can see for Miles and Miles... |

| Dec-18-09 | | crawfb5: <OhioChessFan: <Well played, <Elvis>> As you know, <JFQ>, the King never wrote his own stuff, and that line in fact is a remake of a song by a local band maybe 20 years ago. Indescribable musical style. Sort of New Wave parody. The chorus went "It was a bus full of nuns, holding babies. A bus full of nuns, holding babies. A bus full of nuns holding babies, went over the cliff." The stunning dramatic climax to the song was when the singer was told it was even worse than it sounded. When he asked how that was possible, he was told "The nuns were blind, and the kids were refugees."> I'm reminded of an old SNL bit where Belushi and Ackroyd are spoofing the old Smuckers commercial ("with a name like that, you know it's gotta be good"). They take turns with outrageous and disgusting names for jam. Finally one of them proposes <10,000 nuns and orphans>. "What's so horrible about that?" one asks. "They were all eaten by rats." |

(Ah, the lure of the liquid laugh. Sic.) |

| Dec-18-09 | | madlydeeply: Hey Jim Bartle, thanks for the feedback! I kind of threw it out there to see what people think. My sports heroes are Ivanchuk and Korchnoi!! Yeah baby! hmmm, he tossed out Lance Armstrong, but he also pointed out that Bonds was tossed out for the same innuendoes, yes? I'm of the opinion that ALL the athletes are using substances. Big Pharma!
And why is bicycling so popular anyway? Its not fun to watch...i'll tell ya why...defense industry funds metal alloy research!! The immense DoD budget could market any sport... AND, coming from Tucson, in the desert, I completely agree with him about golf....that is environmentally wasteful here what with acres of rolling lawns in this super dry climate...and if obese people can play it...is it a sport? HA! etc |
|
| Dec-18-09 | | Jim Bartle: Golf has its place, especially the older courses which fit into the landscape. A classic course like the Olympic in San Francisco or Winged Foot in NY is a beautiful sight. But courses carved out of deserts, using obscene amounts of water and fertilizers, not so much. And if you want to toss one baseball player into the all-decade talk, you've got to pick Albert Pujols. Started his career in 2001 and has been brilliant every single year. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jim B> You are a welcome and treasured guest here at Frogspawn Inc. Intelligent and literate persons are always welcome, especially when they leave their credit card at reception. However. It has been noted that you grabbed my top ten kibitzing spot during my recent vacation, and have stayed consistently ahead of me since. Well, that's cool. We'll just *both* have to overtake one of those slackers up ahead. However #2. 'Sport' is one of the few things I'm not interested in. I even find the sporting aspect the least interesting side of chess. I can happily watch a few minutes of football or snooker or hurling or curling, but then I get bored and leave. Ultimately, I don't care who wins. Which is another way of saying ... nothing, really. I find the idea of a sporting debate in Frogspawn quite surreal, but I'm into surrealism. And I know who most of the sport stars *are*, simply by accidental information absorption. Also, I've been commissioned a few times to write about chess for newspaper sport sections, so I can't complain. Just keep it at a level that an arty European geek can understand. We have one someplace ... |
|
| Dec-19-09 | | Jim Bartle: In truth I'm a little embarrassed about being in the kibitzing Top Ten. A year ago I used to wonder if I spent too much time here, but could look at the list and think, "at least I'm not in the top 40." I started thinking about using a new user name when I approached 10,000, but haven't done it yet. |
|
Dec-19-09
 | | Domdaniel: That's quite a leap in one year, definitely. Sometimes I envy those laconic types who *do* spend too much time here, but hardly ever say anything. They're watching us now. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Some "fun facts" on the BIGGEST LOUDMOUTH LIST
<acirce> just came back from a 3 month vacation, and yet still remains TOP BANANA with 500 posts ahead of the next loudmouth on the list. <brankat> is in the top ten, but has not posted for six months. <notyetagm> is in the top ten, and every single post he has made is about chess- and features one or more chess diagrams. <Open Defence> is at number six spot, but where is she if you add <Red October>? Higher that's what. <Rookfile> stopped posting at 10,000 and then started posting only as <Analyze This>. Find his true count by adding. <EmperorAtahualpa> has been absent for almost a year, but I just spotted him posting at <youtube> under the same name, and yes it's the same person- I went to his home page to check. During his holiday, <acirce> was a daily poster at <chessninja> <Eyal> keeps rising on the list despite taking regular absences of 2-3 weeks or even longer. Less than a year ago, both <Domdaniel> and <Whiteshark> were both just under 10,000 posts, but since that time, <Shark> has increased his posting rate by almost 100% and is now approaching 20,000. |
|
| Dec-19-09 | | Jim Bartle: I have an idea the list of "most words kibitzed" would be quite different. |
|
| Dec-19-09 | | Red October: <JFQ> would win hands down |
|
| Dec-19-09 | | Jim Bartle: I think a certain amphibian might provide some competition. |
