Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <Jess> - <the ancient attempt to discover what difference existed between “a herring and a half, and a scuttle of coals>

Very similar, as both are the remnants of carbon-based life forms. Also herring are caught from fishing boats, which can be scuttled (or converted into coal-boats, not necessarily the same thing).

Both also burn well, when dry.

The difference? Well, *scuttlebutt* ('gossip' in America) is not at all like *herringbutt* (a Danish delicacy; elsewhere, a sure sign that a person is a mermaid).

But herringbone and cuttlebone may be confused, especially if you're hard of herring.

Domdaniel: Sonnets, eh? I like that one by Shelley, where it says "My name is Garikasparoff, King of Kings, look on my fianchetto, and despair" ... and then nothing beside remains. Poignant, with a dash of anti-tyranny.

Whoa, a 2200 plays 3.Bc4 in the Sicilian?! Wonder if he'd have tried that against an opponent with a higher rating... but he didn't get much out of it, to be sure. What time control?

its quite a playable line....

my opening play was a little conservative (no not Yitzhak Shamir ...) but perhaps I should have gone for a g6 formation, I didnt want to get caught out on a transposition in the Dragon.. but c'est la vie

<What time control?> 30 days per side for the entire game with an increment of 1 day per move...

Domdaniel: <Annie> Thanks. I've heard there are people so well organized that they check their mail on a daily basis, and even reply to it. It seems scarcely credible, though.

They're probably machines in carbon drag.

can I have a drag of the carbon now ?
